Just as she had taken a step back the stallion stopped, his ears flicking before he turned to the mare and foals that stood just beside him. She knew that he stopped because she stepped away which she was grateful for as it helped calm her nerves. Noelle was four years old now, she should have a foal on her hip and be secure in a stallion's herd already but the dappled mare seemed to have a knack for evading bachelor stallions. Noelle wasn't a particularly strong mare but she was fast and able to squeeze into densely wooded places that large stallions couldn't. She watched the interaction between the horses quietly- the stallion seemed confused for a few moments like he was questioning something she said but he reached towards the large mare to touch his muzzle to hers which had Noelle deathly curious. Her sire had never done such things with her dam or the other mares in her birth-herd. She remembered the flash of teeth, there was no love in that herd, not even friendly greetings like that stallion shared with the mare before her- it had her puzzled and she snorted curiously, taking a few steps towards them. Perhaps he was one of the kind stallions her dam had told her to go find.
Then her eyes settled on the two foals beside the large mare- she knew for certain neither of those foals were sired by the dappled stallion. The mare kept them too closely guarded from him for them to be and they seemed to be an entirely different breed from the stallion and he seemed borderline tolerant towards them. Quickly though her attention broke away from the two cuties and she focused once more on the stallion when he nickered at her. The sound was soft and friendly. She pranced nervously for a few moments, her weight shifting from each hoof. She let her tail flag up into the air as she did so, her ears flicked for only a moment in uncertainty before she settled and returned a nicker to him. He moved slowly and deliberately, not with the aggression and dominance that she had come to expect. It put her nerves at ease and that much was obvious as she visibly relaxed, her legs no longer tensed and ready to bolt, her head held lower just a smidge, and her eyes weren't darting around as if to look for an escape route. She was intrigued by him, captivated if you will. Phoenix was his name, she liked it. It sounded powerful- it was a memorable name. "Phoenix, like the bird of fire." she spoke his name quietly deciding that she liked how it sounded as it rolled from her tongue and she took a few steps towards him. If she wanted to she could reach out and touch him with her muzzle but instead she pranced around him for a moment. She came to a stop infront of him, casting a glance to the mare she now knew as Miss Biscuit. She looked to be a capable mare with two foals to look after, Noelle might not be the sharpest tool in the shed but she knew a mare with foals so young wouldn't concern herself with a stallion who couldn't keep she and her foals safe.
With that in mind Noelle turned to face him again, a soft smile graced her features, "I'm Noelle." Her name came simply from her muzzle, it was a reminder of the winter, a reminder of the first snows that foals would play in. She stretched her head forward now, her nostrils quivered as she took in his scent, it excited her and she gave a squeal tossing her head just the slightest. Her tail swished excitedly to and fro, flagging into the air and she paiffed for a few moments before settling striking the ground with her hoof scoring it in the process. The reaction was not one of her own, but rather one of a young and naive mare in the throws of her heat. As kind as Noelle's mother had been she wasn't the most informative mare which had caused quite the confusion when she had this unbearable itch she couldn't quite get rid of, it never lasted terribly long but it seemed to pull stallions to her like gnats which confused her even more. Quickly though after she settled and seemed to regain her composure she looked Phoenix up and down, uncertainty filled her warm and youthful gaze "You wouldn't hurt your mares, would you Phoenix?" Her question was spoken softly voice laced with a type of hurt that was many years old, her ears perked and listening for his reply. She could only hope he was honest with her, she didn't want to fall into a herd with a stallion akin to her father. Phoenix didn't seem like the type but Noelle had only just met him, granted he excited part of her greatly which she didn't understand quite yet, she didn't want to be tied down to a stallion who didn't care for her, in her opinion she would be better off alone or finding another harem of mares to join.
