The tall brambles and bushes to either side of the black mare brushed against her swollen stomach as she walked, weaving her way around trees and out of the dense forest. Her frame was thin and gaunt, only muscle now rippling through her body and her stomach hanging low from her frame. It was obvious just from one look at the quarter horse that she was heavily pregnant and a victim of the harsh winter. Winter had not been kind to her nor her herd, she recalled the memories both fondly and bitterly. The stallion she had been with for going on 6 years had several other mares besides herself alongside him as they took to the mountains to ride out the winter in. The lead mare at the time was senile, refusing to heed the advice of the other mares and even Nox himself- instead she forced the herd deeper into the mountains and deeper into cougar territory. A blizzard hit one night and against her own better judgement Nefertiti had strayed away to seek out some foliage to try and browse from- only come morning the snow had covered her tracks and her scent. She was unable to find her way back to the herd despite her desperate calls and weeks spent searching. On her own Nefertiti faced many challenges, having lived through a cougar attack in the early winter after she was separated she recalled the fight. Growls, snorts, and sounds one couldn't imagine. It took one lucky kick and she was free, but not without a memory. Several long and angry scars ran the length of her chest- a reminder that she got away but just barely. Now though the mare was heavily pregnant, half starved, and returning home where she could only hope to find the rest of her herd intact and welcoming to her.
With that in mind she pushed onwards, only pausing to rip a branch from one of the bushes to eat on her way towards the nutrient dense meadows that laid in wait for her. She huffed as she walked, ears perked with curiosity at the many signs of life that filled her ears. The trickling of a melted stream behind her, the brushing of leaves against her pelt, and her own breath. It was comforting in a sense but horses, no matter who they were, couldn't stand to be alone for long and that was a feeling she felt now. Loneliness. Just breaking the tree line her pelt was showered with sunlight and she let out a delighted whinny, picking up her pace into a frenzied trot, she shook her head with a snort before slowing and lowering herself into the soft grasses for one good roll. The grass had been protected from the heat in the shadows and thus was still dewy from the night, as she rolled it cleaned her pelt- stripping it of the last bits of her winter coat and removing general debris from it. With a heave she got to her feet, giving a thorough shake and trotted onwards, her curiosity piqued as the scent of a stallion and mare filled her nostrils. She couldn't remember what Nox smelled like, nor what the mares in her own herd smelled like. With that in mind she turned towards the scent, following it and soon enough she was atop a small hill, looking at the two shadowed figures. She let out a shrill whinny to call out to them, her head raised and ears perked atop her head.
Nefertiti approached cautiously, she knew a stallion who wasn't Nox could be aggressive towards her- she wasn't carrying his foal and every experienced stallion knew that if she lost the foal she'd go into heat. That was something she wanted to avoid, Nefertiti had loved Equinox with her whole heart and the last thing she wanted to do was lose his foal- even if he weren't by her side. Though she had better chances of survival with a stallion by her side, it just depended on how the stallion behaved. She would have to find that out on her own, so instead she took a few steps towards the duo cautiously, letting out a friendly nicker every few steps.
