`````welcome to the south side of chicago, where tenacity and grit are as necessary for survival as food and water. nothing comes easy here, even for the dogs that are fortunate enough to be cared for regularly by humans. there is more to the south side than its hardships, though. from the smattering of heavily trafficked 'L' train stations to the many and much loved city parks, the south side has the makings of a relative canine paradise.
`````as a pet or as a stray, you now have the opportunity to make a life for yourself on the streets of the south side. you may chose to live in solitude or to surround yourself with like minded allies or followers, but above all else you must strive to survive.

m'baku could not be any happier to be out and about on the mild spring day that was unfolding so appealingly in front of him. he despised the winter and everything that came along with it, so just being able to see and feel the sun on his alabaster coat was a blessing beyond his capacity to describe. he lived for the time that he was able to spend out in the sun, even if that sun was just beginning to rekindle its brilliance and warmth, and the fact that he was currently on his way to one of his favorite locations made this particular time spent in the sun all the better for him. as he walked alongside his master, a blonde woman of average height and weight by the name of eve, m'baku sported one of his rare, unreserved smiles. he was looking forward to the afternoon of fetch, basking, and hopefully social interaction that lay ahead of him. he considered it very likely that he would see anda once he arrived at the park, as he often did, and perhaps catch a glimpse of her apparent twin of which he knew so little. aside from those assumptions however, m'baku didn't know what to expect from the day, but he had high hopes. in his mind, nothing was impossible on the south side.

although he was little more than a jester in reality, valtari thought of himself as a king in the alleyways of the south side. he didn't want any of the power or widespread control associated with the leadership role that he believed himself to embody, but he did covet the status of it all. the admiration of the people. the applause. the popularity. kings could talk anything out of anyone with very little effort, and valtari wanted that level of responsiveness from everyone that he happened to cross paths with. as it was though, valtari was no king and he still had to do all of the dirty work associated with conning if he wanted to be looked after as he so desired to be. it was for this reason that the laekenois currently found himself digging through the toppled over trash bins of a popular fast food restaurant in search of scraps substantial enough to satiate him. the day had been slow as far as conning opportunities went and valtari had yet to find any success. he knew that his hunger would not just dissipate of its own accord simply because he hadn't found a human or fellow canine to trick out of its hard earned meal though, so he was forced to put forth the effort required to do it the hard way, and to say the least, he was very unhappy to be doing so.

with the sun soaking into the depths of her long raven colored fur, imara watched the distorted reflection of the sky above her in the shimmering surface of lake michigan. she was far from distracted by the mind numbing activity, though. the female's pointed ears were in an alert position and swiveling in response to every subtle noise emanating from behind and beside her, and with each breath imara analysed her olfactory surroundings to prevent herself from being surprised in any capacity. she was tense, despite having her favorite scene spread out in front of her. it seemed as thought there was rarely an occasion on which she was not tense these days. she typically preferred to be left alone, but on the streets of the south side there was nowhere that her solitude could be guaranteed, so her physical tension persisted and the serenity that she desired continued to elude her. the cool water lapping at her front paws should have been soothing, but imara was quickly becoming agitated by the repetitiveness of it. she wanted something to happen. she wanted a fight, to feel her heart beating in her chest and her blood boiling in her veins. she wanted the monotonous note of her life to change its tone. now.

the female lay on her side in the sun, near enough to the playground on which her master's two children were currently playing to watch over them, but not so close as to be enduring the discomfort of laying on the wood chips on which the structure was built. occasionally the small boy and his older sister would come over to pet her stomach or scratch behind her ears, but for the most part she was let alone. she would have been grateful for some more permanent company, human or otherwise, but she was comfortable with things they way that they were too. she hoped to see her sister at some point during the day, but she knew that no amount of desire or effort on her part could actually make that happen. keeping track of her beloved sibling was a challenge because of her status as a stray; anda never knew where to look for her, so she just had to wait for the other female to want to find her. she also hoped that she would have the opportunity to speak with m'baku and/or to meet some new canines with which she could begin to build friendships. anda was not a lonely dog, but she was very sociable and had a heart so large that there was always room for more affection.

The blinding sun shone over the little canine, as she, once again, took the dreadful risk of crossing the road again. Lara had much experience crossing the perilous roads of south side, crossing the road safely and perfectly, or almost getting run over by the huge mechanical machines known as "cars." When the long haired dachshund mix leapt onto the road, she knew that this time, the risk wasn't the roaring vehicles, but the people who were continuously crossing the road. Lara quickly sprang off, through all the hard working people, lightly bumping into them. When the canine finally reached the other busy side of the road, she quickly tried to find a hidden area. Lara desperately looked around, and then bolted into a dim and supposedly empty alleyway to hide behind some sickening trash bins nearby.

valtari's head snapped up when the relative solitude of the alleyway in which he had spent the better part of the afternoon scrounging for scraps was shattered by the appearance of a familiar, but for the most part unknown, dachshund mix. his ears flicked, first toward the female and then away, as he pressed himself to make a quick judgement of her usefulness to him in the moment. she was small, an attribute that most humans tended to find endearing, and healthy-looking too, for the most part. he knew that she would certainly make a better beggar than he, himself would, and not just because of his lack of a desire to work or beg for his food. val was quick to flash a smile in the other canine's direction upon considering these facts, and he took a sly step in her direction after shaking the dirt and debris out his dense coat as he opened his mouth to speak. "hello, sweetheart. i don't believe that we've met before. i'm valtari but you can call me val if you'd prefer," he drawled, still grinning his cocksure grin despite the slow movement of his lips. "and you are?"

Lara saw a sudden patch of shade come towards her. As the dachshund mix looked up from the muddy ground, she was shocked to see a large cream coloured canine that had distinctive scars on his towering fore legs, and a grin that was hard to indentify. She could feel tiny pebbles in her paws but dared not to move. " Lara," she whined. The stubby-legged dog was perturbed, was he going to attack? She could no longer hear the deafening and noisy traffic behind her. Lara thought of something quick, in defence. "I'm not trying to snatch any of your valuable food," she suddenly snapped, somewhat surprised that she was able to even talk back a little louder, but that sudden pang of confidence was wearing away at a quick pace. "and don't call me that," she mumbled, but didn't know if the laekenois could hear her.

━━━x mickey was a fair being, really. it wasn't his fault half of the strays of south side were blind rats who didn't know how to fend for themselves; poor, pathetic mutts who needed to be taught multiple lessons. he'd just encountered a group of small, ragged strays that continuously threatened to 'destroy' his family. mickey had done what any other south sider would do - rile them up. the moment he laid a paw on them they squealed like newborn puppies, but they just would not leave him alone. so, what else could he do but dig deeper? he ripped apart one of the smaller ones; she even had a collar on! she was asking for it.
mickey paused as the long and loud loudcage rumbled above him, passing through with great speed. he'd always wondered why humans stepped into their bellies and rode around with them. were they holding meetings in them? did they live in loudcages? mickey would never understand.

━━━x trash crumpled under dennis' paws as he leaped into the big green dumpster. it smelled promising and fresh - which meant that there were goodies waiting for him. he just... had to find them. he grunted, swallowing deeply before digging into the dumpster. clumps of human trash flung past his muzzle as he came closer and closer to uncovering that sweet smell. chicken! he panted, clamping his jaws around the bony scraps and flinging them out of the dumpster, his body following soon after. his tail began to wag in happiness as he sniffed around the chicken before wildly eating up the smelly but oh-so-tasty leftovers.

valtari couldn't have been more pleased by the little female's response to his approach. of her three options—fight, flight, or freeze—she had selected the one that was the one that demanded the least amount of effort from him, and conserving energy had always been his top priority. despite her words of excuse and challenge, val's sly grin crept wider on his muzzle when the dashchund mix spoke. although she had begun strong, by the time that she voiced her irritation at the pet name that he had spontaneously given her, lara's tone made her unease quite clear to him, and valtari knew that an apprehensive individual was much more easily swayed than a doggedly confident one. he stepped even closer to her again before replying, hoping that the increased proximity might eventually equate to increased intimacy and his version of trust between them. "i would much rather that you snatched someone else's valuable food on my behalf," he said, regarding her with daring eyes, that devilish smile of his and one eyebrow raised in preemptive question. "interested, sweet hea— lara?" he asked, just barely preventing himself from explicitly going against her wishes and referring to her as 'sweet heart' for a second time.
