ＳＡＮＣＴＵＡＲＹ

For years, horses and humans lived together, worked together. They formed friendships, they created bonds... but they also formed hateful relationships, suffered abuse and lived under an almost tyrannical rule. Some horses loved humans, others despised them.

But then one day, the humans disappeared. No explosions, no awful diseases, no wars. They were just... gone.

Many horses perished, locked in stables, or tied up in inescapable positions.

But others survived. Escaping their tethers, jumping their pasture fences, it didn't matter. They got out. Instinct then took over. Those champion stallions who had been kept separate from mares suddenly felt a desperate need to make herds, those pet mares that had never felt freedom or companionship felt the need to travel the plains with others of their kind.

A number of horses found their way to this vast plains, the area large enough to hold a number of herds.
Now safe with those of their own kind, no longer having to worry about keeping their humans happy, they felt that they had found paradise...

They found sanctuary.

Breeds

Any breeds, of all shapes and sizes, are allowed here! Wild mustangs, working Draft horses, champion warmbloods, family ponies - any of them can find sanctuary. All I ask is that their reference image is realistic - no art/unrealistic images please!
Ages

According to many different sources, horses in the wild can live up to 40 years, with an average lifespan of 25-30 years. That being said, please be realistic with this. The fertility of mares begins to decline after 15 years, after which there is an increased risk of foal loss. As well as this, stallions come into their 'prime' at about 13, where it is less likely that they will lose a fight. A four year old stallion is unlikely to beat a 14 year old stallion.

Vocalizations

Whinny/Neigh

The most typical 'horse noise', whinnies (other times called 'neighs') can mean many different things. An anxious whinny may be more high-pitched, accompanied by a lowered tail or flicking ears. A neigh might also be used to announce a horse's arrival, or to catch the attention of another horse.

Nicker

A nicker is a soft, kind sound, often used as a "Hi!". However, a nicker could be used as a nervous 'uh oh, what should I do?'

Blowing/Snorting

A horse exhaling quickly might be a sign of excitement or a sound of annoyance, depending on the accompanying body language.

Groans

Just like in humans, groaning can mean that a horse is in extreme pain - or it could mean that they're doing something that requires a good bit of effort... Like standing up after a good nap!

Squeals

A squeal can be a sign of a threat - a stallion might squeal at a potential rival. However, it might also be a sign of playfulness in a younger horse.

Sighs

Much like in humans, a sigh is a sign that a horse is content.

Sighing softly, Wash strode across the plains, jet black tail flicking at his hocks lightly. The flies were already starting to appear, even though it was only the start of spring, but that just meant that they were already beyond annoying. Turning his head to huff at a fly that landed on his flank, he looked back ahead. Every year before this, his humans had sprayed him with some stuff, some weird smelling liquid that soaked his pelt, but kept the pests at bay. Perhaps, if he had stayed in his barn, he might have been able to figure out how to break it or something. Snorting softly, he kept walking forward. At least going forward, he might find something.

Chin tucked into chest, tail flagged behind him, ears pinned to his neck, Riff pushed himself across the terrain at a bouncy trot, a low squeal rippling from his chest. His humans were gone, his lifestyle ruined. Launching himself upwards in a buck, he landed with a snort, then pushed himself into a lope. He hated this. He hated being alone. He hated having to figure out stuff for himself. He hated all of this. Sliding to a stop, his pale hooves churning up the mud beneath him, he rolled his body upwards into a striking rear, a rumbling roar building from his chest. Someone had to pay him attention, and now.

Taking short, quick steps in a choppy, uneven trot, Elphaba traveled the terrain nervously, ears flicking to every sound. She had never gone longer than a night without seeing a human, but now it had been days... Or had it been weeks? She didn't know. Time meant nothing when she had no routine. Tossing her bicoloured mane, she spooked at something silly, breaking into a canter back in the direction she had come from. This was like torture for the nervous mare, and she was despising every minute of it. Her pink nostrils flared, then relaxed, then flared again. She had to find someone soon, or her heart might just quit.

Nostrils quivering with excitement, Rizzo picked up her large hooves daintily, crossing the terrain at an eager walk. She had always wanted to know the taste of freedom, and now, she had the chance. Her rounding belly - not yet noticable, but still growing - swam with the soft feeling of her foal moving inside her, and her heart was full to bursting. She was having her first foal, she was finally free, and the weather was brightening. Stopping at the crest of a hill, she looked out over the land beneath her. So much space to travel, so little time.

An excited whinny escaped Inez' lips as she opened her stride, her lazy canter now picking up into an almost flat out gallop as she crossed the open plains. Her ears were almost trembling as she felt freedom for the first time. True freedom. Away from a humans, away from her mother, away from everything. She tucked her nose into her chest as she kicked up her hind legs, the cream tail billowing out behind her proudly like a banner. Her mother had given her a thousand and one warnings, but not even one of them crossed her mind as she almost flew across the terrain, like a ghost against the sky.

With a heavy heart, the unusually coloured Kalokairi trudged across the terrain. She had had foals taken from her after they were born, she had had foals taken when they were old enough to leave... But she had never had any die. And to go through hours of painful labour, only to find that the filly that she had held so dearly laying lifeless in the shade beneath her... Well, that broke the nervous Kairi's spirit. She didn't care about the world around her anymore. A mountain lion could come up right now and touch her nose, and she would not care. Her nose almost touching the hard, dry dirt beneath her, she plodded along, the image of absolute sadness.

Texes Rose grazed quietly next to her 6 month old filly. Rose picked her head up as she started walking towards who knows where. The grulla paint mare snorted softly as she lifted her head and let out a loud shrill whinny, hoping to call in another horse, maybe even a stallion. Rose kept at a steady flowy trot so her foal could keep up.

the bright chestnut filly started nursing on her mother. The filly was not yet weaned but She did know how to eat grass. Morning Glory then started grazing softly. Just as she was grazing her dam's head shot up as she looked around snorting. The filly picked her head up also as her mother took off and she took off after her dam. Glory matched her mothers steady float trot but her was a little choppy.

The pair relaxed at the edge of a forest. The blue roan mother was grazing, one eye on her colt as he nursed. Okami was a yearling but he still nursed occasionally. He was nursing less and less and relying mostly on grass. Occasionally Cinder would lift her head, studying her surroundings for danger. Seeing none, she'd lower her head and graze.

All was peaceful until the stallion appeared. Bucking and running like a playful young foal until he stopped, shrieking his presence to all nearby. Ohanzee's ears flicked back in annoyance, a huff escaping her throat. Lifting her dark head from the grass she'd been enjoying, the mare studied him for a moment, before calling out, "Don't you know how to be quiet!?"

The buckskin mare cantered across the plains, her gaze hungrily devouring everything she saw. It had been a while since she'd last seen humans and escaped and Mozart loved the freedom. Sure it was hard without her humans and she missed them, but this feeling of freedom was absolutely wonderful. The only thing that dampened her mood was the loneliness and the lack of treats. Mozart had never gone so long without some kind of social interaction or her favorite peppermint candies that her human used to feed her. The loneliness was beginning to stress her out. Hopefully she'd be able to find herself some company soon.

Merlot was alone. He'd been alone few times during his life, the first being when he'd left his natal band to carve out his own life. He'd missed them at first, especially his half-sister, Ohanzee. And then he'd been alone when he'd lost his band a few days earlier to an older stallion. For a moment he considered trying to visit Ohanzee, but she could be anywhere and her stallion certainly wouldn't welcome him anywhere near his mares. Which left Merlot to find himself a new band. Not that hard right? A nicker proved him right and Merlot spotted the grulla and her foal instantly. His gaze zeroed in on the foal but he was close enough to tell it was a filly. Good. That meant wooing the mother would be easier since he didn't have to worry about the foal. Merlot nickered, alerting the mare of his presence as he cantered closer.

Texes Rose sighed as she kept on treaking. She then stopped as she heard a nicked as she turned to see a stallion. She then got in protective more as she ushered her filly behind her as she turned to the stallion as she slowly walked towards making sure her foal was behind her.

Morning Glory cantered to keep up with her mother. But as her mother stopped the filly stopped. She heard a nicked as she turned with her mother But before she could see who the stranger was her mother pushed her behind her and slowly moved toward as Glory moved toward the stallion also
