If you had the choice- would you pick success or downfall? I think we all know the answer, but the question is why. What fuels this brutal, unforgiving, animalistic desire to survive and succeed and endure? Feral horses have never known anything more. They live and fight and die without ever stopping to ask why they undergo these struggles. They do not entertain petty emotions experienced by humans; they simply know bravery and determination and desire. Fear sure, uncertainty sure, even hatred if it comes to it, but they do not sulk and complain and over think things to oblivion. They just live, and they do so fiercely, proudly, always fighting for what they want- for the right to keep on kicking, to pass on their genes and their legacies for generations to come. They do so happily, despite their lives being full of brutality. Boiling summers and unforgiving winters and endless power struggles- stallions fighting for mares and mares fighting for respect and the best water, the best grazing. Fighting, fighting, fighting, even when it seems like they should just stop. Even when it would be easier to roll over and submit to the elements or the humans that always seem to be pursuing them. This is the story of just a few groups of these mighty creatures, of their endless struggles and battles and tragedies; of their successes and celebrations and achievements. This is the story of their lives, from point a to point b, the story of how and why and for what they decide to endure and survive. Of course, eventually, everybody's tale ends the same way; but in the mean time, why not dictate what will be told about your life for generations to come after the end of your story? Make it good; make it all worth it.

one// this is a relaxed semi-literate roleplay, this means a minimum of three sentences per character, per post with decent spelling and punctuation. minor spelling mistakes and whatnot are fine, i make them often as well, but your post has to make sense. if it does not, how can anyone reply to it? also- don't capitalize every word or use exclamation marks at the end of every sentence. sorry, but it urks me.
two// you have to create your own forms, and they must include the following; name, age, gender, height, rank, herd, personality, history[optional only if you include a well-written personality]. please do not just snag the forms i use for my characters, as this happens all the time when i ask people to make their own forms and i let it slide, but this is so i can make sure you can keep up with the semi-literate pace. also under this rule falls roleplay posts; you don't have to have some nice, pretty, fancy coding when you post. if you give me a nice, thought out, well detailed post, i don't care what it looks like. all i ask is you somewhere include[clearly] who your character is interacting with, and which character is which when you post.
three// you can have as many characters as you want, but you must make at least one mare for every stallion. I want a 2:1 ratio for mares to stallions at the least so they all have a chance for decent herds.
four// i will cover the importance of age later on, but here, i will just say this; band stallions must be at least six years old, and lead mares must be at least eight. any younger and i will ask you to change the age, because they tend to not get such ranks until they are older.
five// in feral horse rps i often see people arguing over good ages and at what ages horses start being old and weaker; in my rp, your horse can live to be twenty-five. no older. they do have to start getting weak and sick until just a few years prior; twenty at the earliest. mares can breed up until age nineteen/twenty, as well. i do not care if these two things are unrealistic or unnatural; this is my rp and this is what i say goes regarding age.
six// if you have any questions/concerns about the roleplay or any events and/or characters whatsoever, feel free to pm me, and i'd be happy to clear anything up. also, if you have anything that you would like to see happen in the rp, shoot me a pm. i'm always open to suggestions to keep the interest levels up and the drama flowing.
seven// i am the only one who decides the season, weather and time of day; be sure to read a post of mine from time to time to find out. i don't like it when i'm reading through the thread and one pair of dogs is in the middle of summer and another the dead of winter; same for different times of day. also, do not bring in any big drama[sickness, blizzard, etc] without first asking me. thank you.
eight// you must disable your signature on this thread. you may leave it on for the discussion thread, but not here.
nine// do not post forms on this thread. forms go on the discussion thread only, as well as reservations and any out of character chatting. you can post ooc chat here- so long as it is accompanied by an actual post. i like to have the roleplay thread clean and neat, it bothers me if it is not.

one// a herd of horses is also known as a band or a harem; a band consists of 2-20 mares, their foals/yearlings, and a single stallion. often times younger bachelors will shadow a larger herd, either just to observe and learn, or to try an mate with/steal mares from the stallion when he is not looking. some stallions will allow younger males to shadow their herds, though if they are caught trying to mate/steal any of his mares they will be chased off.

two// the dominant stallion is not actually in control of the herd, contrary to popular belief. he does not lead the herd to new locations, and he does not control the mares' within his herd. the dominant stallions' job is to protect the herd; to keep them away from predators, humans, and rival stallions. if danger arises he may try to attack a predator or lone human, though if it is, say, a group of wolves or a group of humans/much older stallion, he will attempt to snake the herd away from danger. a band stallion breeds with all his mares, and chases out any colts by the age of two-three, and any fillies by their first heat cycle to prevent inbreeding. a stallion will rarely accept another stallions' colts; he will often kill the colt or chase it away from his herd, however fillies will be seen as an investment, for when they grow they can produce him foals as well. once colts are about a year old, their father will begin to show them how to fight and snake, though ultimately have little time and emotions to spare for any of their foals. when the lead mare decides to move the herd, the dominant stallion will sweep around the sides and back of the herd in a constant motion, keeping the mares and foals in a tight group behind the lead mare as they move. if a dominant stallion is challenged by another stallion, there will be a short fight in which both males will scream, bite, and kick at each other, however they don't cause major injuries to one another- they will draw blood perhaps, but no really bad wounds. after a few minutes, one stallion will give up, and the loser will forfeit his entire herd, giving it to the winning stallion. during winter, stallions' are calmer, saving energy to look for food and such. they generally ignore each other, letting rival stallions and herds go in peace, however they will fight over the better grazing locations and un-frozen water sources.

three// the lead mare. the dominant mare. she is the boss- what she says goes, it is her herd. the lead mare is never just the stallions' favorite- the lead mare is the oldest, wisest, and most dominant mare in the herd. the dominant mare takes the herd to new meadows and water sources, takes lead during any kind of movement- be it running from danger or just moving to new grazing locations. she is the most respected horse out of the herd, and gets what she wants when she wants. the lead mare position is claimed through establishing a dominance hierarchy - through challenging the other mares and making yourself lead. mares do not get violent, however. their fights do not last very long- they nip and squeal at each other until, after a short time, one backs down. usually the younger horse. if another mare, foal, or yearling in the herd is being annoying/troublesome/disrespectful, the lead mare will chase said horse out of the herd. they will have to linger on the edge of the herd until the lead mare decides to them back in, and if she does not, they will be snaked away by the lead. the stallion has no say in this- if the lead decides to remove a horse from the herd, he must let her. the lead mare may also snake the stallion himself out of the herd if he is incapable, inexperienced, cocky, or disrespectful- he will not be allowed back into the herd unless the lead mare decides to bring him back. if she does not, the lead mare will chase the stallion away and take the herd to find a new stallion by calling out to nearby stallions. the band stallion may try to fight for his herd back, but if he loses, that's that.

four// snaking. mares do not get upset just because a stallion snaked them; they may be a bit grumpy about being disturbed in such a manner, but will calm down quickly. the act of snaking is when a horse lowers their head and neck, pinning their ears back, and nips at another horses' heels/haunches/back legs to drive them in the direction they want the horse to go. when stallions snake mares into their herds, the mare may protest and run for a short time, but unless the stallion is six years or younger, will give up rather quickly and go where the stallion directs.

five// a bachelor band is a group of stallions without any mares; they group up to survive winter, and the older stallions of the bunch will often help teach the younger stallions to fight/snake/keep a herd. a bachelor band works much like a normal herd- there is a stallion who is older than the rest who leads the bunch, and the rest just follow as if he were their lead mare.

six// the mare reproductive cycle is pretty straight forward- once pregnant, a mare will carry her foal for 11 months, until full-term, then depart from the herd to give birth. the herd will wait for her to return, generally it only takes a few hours. normally just one foal is born; twins are rare, and if twins are born, it is unlikely that all three horses will survive. mares allow their foals to nurse for up to a year, though generally wean them at about six months.

the estrous cycle - 'heat', occurs roughly every 20-22 days, and lasts for just a few days, at which point they cycle through four stages of heat. during winter, mares do not go into heat at all. after giving birth, a mare will go back into her heat cycle one to two weeks after the birth, allowing her to be covered again.
stage one - the mare is uninterested and will not allow a stallion to cover her, though will probably still join a herd without much trouble.
stage two - the mare is still pretty uninterested and will not breed, though will not protest as much to joining a herd.
stage three - the mare is growing interested in the stallion, and might allow him to cover her. she will a join a herd without trouble.
stage four - the mare is very interested in the stallion, and will always accept being covered, no matter who the stallion is, even if it isn't her band stallion. she is desperate.

seven// oftentimes a group of young bachelors will gang up on a band stallion and attempt to steal his herd- if they succeed, which they almost never will, the stallions will fight among themselves until just one is left, and that stallion with become the new dominant stallion. the others stallions may decide to trail the herd to try again. if the lead mare does not like the wining stallion[she thinks he is too young/cocky/rude, ect.] she will chase him out and call for an older stallion to come and take the herd.

    (c) to me- i spent a long time writing each of these up. do not use unless you first ask my permission, thank you.

    spring
spring, the season of new life. temperatures rise to a comfortable level, snow melts away, revealing new growth, and animals come out of hiding. in spring, mares are beginning to go back into heat, and some late foals may even be born. new herds are forming, old ones expanding, while yearlings venture away from home to find their own place in the wilderness. rain is common, and clouds always dot the sky.

    summer
in summer, days grow long and hot. nights are short, but offer a few hours of comfortable temperatures. many horses migrate toward water sources or shade, seeking to hide from the afternoon sun. mares are still in heat, though by this point all foals from the previous year will have already been born. stallion are still on the search for more mares, while lead mares move the herd to a cooler location. despite the heat, summer is an active season. young stallions show off, yearling mares get whisked away, and band stallions are daring enough to attempt stealing a mare or two. rain is not common in summer, and if it does it is often a warm, heavy rain that lasts only a couple hours at most.

    autumn
with autumn comes the return of cooler temperatures. nights and mornings are chilly, hinting at the freezing months to follow. rain becomes more common, and the colors of the land begin to fade. turning from dark green to vibrant oranges and reds, until the earth is taken over by a dull gray. mares are rarely in heat during autumn, but those covered in spring may start to foal. should this happen, there is a slim chance that said mares may go into heat for the remaining weeks of autumn, but may not always accept a stallion.

    winter
winter. snow coats the ground, the earth is blanketed in a glistening white, and temperatures drop. foals can be born throughout the winter months, however not all will survive the freezing the temperatures. mares are never in heat, and stallions are calm, instead fighting against predators whom may use the horses's weakened state to attack. food must be dug out from under the snow, and thin layers of ice may have to broken to reach water.

The world around him looked like a painting; painted in vibrant greens and blues and earthy browns and yellows. The sky was a pale powdery blue, wispy white clouds floating gently across the serene backdrop. Blunt, stained teeth ripped up the fresh spring earth as Sebastian grazed. Winter was a mere three weeks behind them and while all of the snow and signs of death had fled from the land, all of them were still working to regain the weight and the the health they'd lost in the snowy months. Sebastian raised his velvet muzzle, thick black mane wrapped around his neck from a light breeze as his intense dark eyes found his little family- his brother was nearby, as always, as was his Soldier and their new colt, Knight. The large stallion let a soft nicker spill from between rubbery black lips as he made his way toward the buckskin mare. Before winter his herd had been six strong- Sebastian had laid claim three mares as had Jeremiah, but a late blizzard had taken all but Soldier, and surprisingly, her premature colt from them. The large black stallion lowered his muzzle to bump it gentle against her own, rumbling an affectionate greeting.

Haunt let out a curdling scream as he threw his chest against the younger stallion one last time, striking the colts' stomach with the edges of his sharp hooves several times before the three year old bachelor tore away desperately, fleeing into the moors with what would become his first scars and a lesson not to get in the way of someone better than you. The dapple grey stud snorted, ears pinned harshly against his skull as he stomped his front hooves down in the grass several times. The colt had done nothing wrong- but he had gotten in Haunt's way and slowed down his search for mares; he had justified attacking other stallions for even less than that. With the matter resolved, finally Haunt was back on the hunt. He craved mares- the few he had died off during winter, not that he spared even a second to morn for their lives but rather grew enraged that they dared die on him and leave him without any little trophies to breed and flaunt. The handsome stallion swung his body around with a loud, raspy, high-pitched neigh to call out to any mares in the area. Haunt operated on his own agenda- he would cover any mare he could find that would accept his advances, but he only collected those who were young and beautiful- preferably timid and obedient subjects, but if they were young enough he could push them around all the same. Long black legs broke into a swift canter across the grassy landscape, sharp eyes searching for mares.

Vagabond pressed her soft muzzle against Tuka's shoulder gently, nuzzling her young companion affectionately. Vagabond didn't show any form of affection or kindness to anyone but her foals, though she considered young Tuka one of her foals. She was innocent and naive, this was her first week ever stepping foot outside captivity, but when a chance to escape her captors arose she couldn't leave little Tuka behind. A friendly, low rumble left the splashed mares' lips before she lifted her head back to full height and gazed out at the horizon. The sun had just risen over the distant mountains, and the sky was a pale blue streaked with yellow and pink pastels. Unlike the rest of the horses in this area, both Vagabond and Tuka were healthy and strong at their normal weight, maybe even plumper than usual, thanks being captive throughout all of winter. The beautiful painted roan mare let out a loud nicker, though she stayed put. She needed to get Tuka into a herd so she could learn how to survive properly out here, but if any stallion wanted them, they would have to come find them. Vagabond wasn't the type to throw herself at some stud's feet.

The sound of squeals in the distance spooked Tuka into jumping to the side as her head shot straight up, ramming unintentionally into the mare who she had grown close with over the last four months- Vagabond. Tuka had been born and raised in human hands, and one day they brought in a wild mustang mare who was kicking and screaming her displeasure at the ropes and hands forced on her body. She had stayed with them through winter, and just a mere four days ago a part of the fence in their pasture had broken down. Vagabond snaked Tuka through the opening, and off they were into the horizon. The young, innocent mare calmed almost instantly as the roan's touch, settling herself into Vagabond's side in search of protection and comfort. The pretty palomino roan paint didn't so much as lift her head when her friend turned to call out to... Someone, instead pressing her white muzzle against the smaller mares' neck with a snort.

Fancy let out a squeal as she broke into a flat gallop beside her half-sister, black tail flagged up over her back like a prize-winning ribbon, spreading her strong heat scent for any stallion who may be nearby. Wraith and Fancy had just struck out on their own from their fathers' herd a mere three days ago, and since then Fancy had quickly found herself in the last stages of her first heat cycle- desperate for a stallion to find her. The beautiful dark dun kicked out with strong back legs before shoving herself forward, faster and faster, the wind the duo created pushing her dark mane back and streaming her thick tail out behind her. Caught up in her excitement, Fancy's long front legs were tangled with her sisters' and in a second the two went tumbling to the ground in a mass of limbs and bodies slick with sweat. Carefully Fancy pulled herself away, rolling over onto her opposite side and raising to her hooves once more with a grunt. The little outburst would have hopefully drawn attention, at the least.

Consecutive, short, high-pitched squeals erupted from Wraith's maw as the ghostly pale buttermilk mare jerked her head straight up and shot off at a gallop towards the lake; an act that obvious surprised her half-sister, Fancy, but the taller mare recovered quickly and threw herself after Wraith. Generally the pale mare was an incredibly laid-back and calm one; but every now and then you just needed to run. They didn't make it very far, though, for just a minutes after Fancy closed the gap between them the rather clumsy dun mare strayed too close and tangled her legs with Wraith's. The two crashed to the ground, startled squeals spilling from them both, though thankfully neither was really hurt. The pale silver mare waited for Fancy to pick herself up before doing the same with an agitated huff, pinning her ears and slapping her tail against her soft haunches.

Rhapsody snorted, pawing roughly at the earth with one sharp gray hoof and tearing up bits of grass and soil as she did so. He stallion had died during the dead of winter, and come spring his remaining mares had split up to go their own ways. That was three weeks ago, and still Rhapsody was without a stallion. She hated not having a herd, especially when she was this deep in her head cycle. The gorgeous black mustang mare let out what was her third loud, needy call of the morning, swishing her heavily scented black tail against her velvet haunches. Eventually she slid into a slow, easy walk, sparkling brown eyes watching for any sign of a stallion- no matter who they were or how terrible. She just wanted someone right now. Or rather, she wanted to be covered, and after that she would desire attention and the feeling of safety. If whoever covered her could not provide that, she would be back on the hunt.

I would rather die trying
A white flash bolted between trees and flashed into a meadow. Short fresh grass danced slightly in the wind. The white blur slowed and stooed. Blue orbs looked around as the pure white mare bent her head down and grazed on soft green grass. This mare was young, and had only been through four winters before. They never were super harsh she had a longer coat than most. This mare was not the usual horse you would find, she was and icelandic horse mixed with a wild mustang. Her father was made for the winter months. Th mares name was moon's illusion, because when she was born, she was born under the full moon which made her coat glow when she was born and almost look like a ghost.

The mare lifted her head and snorted when she heard a neigh from a stallion not to far away (haunt) Moon's ears swirled forwards as she glanced around. She was not to increased in a stallion yet but teased him by spreading her best scent in the wind. Moon continued to graze as the white mare then shook out her. Mane and her forelock draped down onto her left eye.

Those who say sunshine is pure happiness
The odd color d mare named rain grazed on tall grass that bent in the wind. The grass was think but tender. She loved this grass and kept grazing. Her ears were in constant look out for a stallion. Rain lifted her head and a high pitched neigh escaped from her mouth. Her chocolate eyes the looked back to the ground and continued grazing. She flicked her tail in annoyance as flies landed on her. She decided to move and she moved about ten feet away and continued grazing. The paint mare then finished grazing and and stood in the meadow. She decide dead she would keep moving in case of predators. She the wAlked through the grass. The tall green stalks ticked her legs as she threaded through it.
has never danced in the rain

The buckskin mare's dark nostrils flares as she took in her stallion's scent, yellowed teeth clicking together as she nipped at his nose, warning him away from the young foal at her side. She was an over protective dam, which was only to be expected given her history with foals. But she pressed her grey muzzle against his before reaching up to lip his forelock in a rather mothering way. She loved her stallion, and knew he'd love to grow the herd again. She looked around at the grassy area before her, then down at her buckskin colt, nursing happily. It was a wonder he'd survived when the other mares hadn't. Soldier attributed his fortune to his parents' strong genes.

Speaking of foals with strong genes.... Run To Battle's scent was growing stronger. It was the second time she'd been in heat since giving birth to Knight, the first time she had refused any and all attempts from Sebastian to breed, too focused on getting her and her foal in good health. An experienced dam, she also knew breeding in very late winter/very early spring would result in a foal at the beginning or middle of winter, and Soldier knew she would not be able to keep a newborn foal alive in mid-winter. At this time, however, the foal would be born around the same time as Knight had been this year. Still dangerous, but could be worth a shot. Soldier hadn't yet decided if she'd risk it, and would leave it to Sebastian to decide in the next couple days when the buckskin mare would be receptive to being covered. For now, any and all stallions to approach her rear were getting a swift kick.

The month old colt clacked his teeth as his sire approached, nervously fretting over his dam's teat, unsure whether or not it was okay to suckle yet, if he'd shown his father enough respect. His dam was very adamant about him showing proper behavior towards his elders and he was beginning to learn, though it required many nips and sometimes even nursing refusals to drill the lesson into him. He was stubborn. After Soldier nipped his sire, Dragon Slayer decided it was safe to continue with nursing. The warm liquid was beginning to change, becoming a lot fattier and more filling, as his dam's diet changed. He had already figured out the warm whether had something to do with it and appreciated this kind of milk much more than the milk from his first week or so. The weather itself was altogether better, though Knight hardly woke up very fresh anymore. If he stirred early enough, he could just barely catch the last of the night's cool mist to play in. Sometimes his dam would even join in for a few moments, but he desperately wished for a playmate.

The blue mare's small ears flicked as the call of a stallion sounded. She was intrigued, however she did not raise her head from grazing. She only whinnied between bites, signaling her presence but doing nothing more. Was it simply disinterest? Had to be, because the mare did not play games. She was very straight forward and business-like.... and was simply too engrossed in putting on much needed weight to care much about a passing stallion. There would be plenty in the next month or so, she had to worry about herself for now.

Clueless Nights xxxxxxxxxxmare | eight | mustang | no herd | heat; stage four | tagged; none
════════════════════════════════════
The mare was quite content with where she was, the solitude welcoming but at the same time the eight year old was growing bored of the silence. This has been her fault, once again adding to her track record of getting herself kicked out of a herd because of her inability to behave towards those older mares. She just could not help it, it was in her nature. Clue's temperamental behavior and her mind frame of attempting to dominate those older than her seemed to be an immediate no no whenever she was once again put into the situation of being in a herd again. Time and time again it seemed she was booted out after she showed her true colors. Only having spent four years so far out in the wilderness, you'd expect her to have adapted to the good and bad and learn, the only thing was, she hadn't. Clue still expected others to tread lightly, less they wanted her to blow up on them. Things like that were far and wide, thus leaving the mare once again, alone. Not only had she been kicked out, she had also lost her foal to the cold winter weather. Now, here the bay mare was, grazing in the spring grass, in plain sight but pretty alert over her surroundings. She was bound to attract attention not that she would mind some, even if she was pretty picky. She stopped abruptly from her grazing when the echoing sound of a very displeased stallion. Flicking her black tail, she snorted and began to move, leaving the greenery for something else, specifically water. All of the reflecting on the spring before had her wanting a change of view and possibly some company to play with. Though it was highly unlikely for her to deny much company, in fact, she sort of craved it for the time being. Clue blamed it on the season, the the climate she enjoyed, the rest of it was simply going through the motions with her.

Nix xxxxxxxxxxmare | six | appaloosa x mustang | no herd | heat; stage two | tagged; none
════════════════════════════════════
Ah, the spunky little mare was what you could say frolicking around like a yearling. This was very common for her, so calling it strange would be a lie. Nix's usual curious demeanor was at a high now that the cold wintry months were gone and out came the sun with spring. By far this was the mare's favorite season, though fall was a close second. The spotted equine squealed in what you could call delight as she splashed through the water, clearly acting more like a filly than a six year old mare, but that would be Nix. She was a bit foolish and childish by nature but she did have her serious moments. She was far from alert, more focused on enjoying herself rather than watching her surroundings, not a good idea you could say. The mare would easily spook if she was suddenly with company, though she highly enjoyed company from other equines, meeting strangers was another topic. Wary in the beginning but give or take an hour and she could possibly down right annoy whomever decided to approach the spotted mare. With her frolicking done for now, she stopped and lowered her head to drink the cool water before she took in her surroundings. Exhaling heavily, Nix grew bored rather quickly before she decided to make herself known and let out a high pitcHed whinny, clearly to draw attention to herself, even if it could possibly turn into unwanted attention. Instead of staying still and waiting for some sort of response that could possible come, the six year old took off full speed ahead, across the open landscape, black streaked tail flagging out behind her. If she came across a herd, she would possibly attempt to ease her way into it, though the young six year old was not planning to get to close to any equines just yet, she planned to hopefully have a little freedom mixed with flirtatious fun.
