Nana had almost been fully asleep when she heard splashing in the water. She did not open her eyes immediately; she was quite content to leave them shut. If it were Halimah, she'd be a little more graceful. Halimah was, as one might expect, a natural swimmer. No, this was not the sound of a hippo, Nana knew. The mother opened her eyes to gaze out towards the small lake to which she and Halimah had been traveling. A wild donkey was splashing around, cooling off.
The creature didn't look too thrilled, though, Nana noted. It seemed... paranoid. Intimidated. As it should be. It got out of the water and began to walk away, towards the grasses. It was quite a distance from her. However, it stopped, gazing into the distance as a little flicker of fear went through its eyes. Nana followed the look; in the warmth of the sun sat a male lion, of a reasonable size. Nana could not tell for sure from her angle, but she thought she could just make out the silhouette of a lioness laying in the grass near the male. That would make sense, as they usually traveled in prides. Nana was fairly certain it was just those two, though; lions were strangely noisy.
Nana watched the wild donkey hurry back to the water's edge, and Nana stated loudly to the creature, her tone devoid of feeling, "Oh, don't worry about the cats, the only creatures that are not intimidated by mothers like me are fools and my daughter." Speaking of, Nana wondered briefly where Halimah had ended up. The little brat hadn't yelled for her mommy yet, though, so Nana did not bother to look.

Halimah was several meters from her mother, lost in the grass. The young hippo was not as tall as her mother, and she felt like she was swimming in the field around her. It wasn't anything like being in the water, though. It was much hotter, and sometimes the shorter grasses tickled! Halimah always kept to the paths when her mother was around, but now Nana was sleeping and Halimah wanted to see what it was like to be a land animal.
Some distance away, she heard some murmurings through the hot, still air; she couldn't make out the words that were being said, but the voices sounded wary. They also sounded old - much older than her - and higher pitched, like a grumbling. Those were definitely carnivores she was hearing; Halimah heard a lot of water animals talk, and they always had deeper voices than the land animals. The animals that flew - like the herons or the buzzards - had a wide variety of voices, and Halimah liked to imagine how funny it would be if her mother sounded the way a duck did. She giggled aloud thinking about it, but her attention was drawn back to the voices.
Halimah lifted her head high and stared intently into the grass.

OoC: I exchanged PMs with Severus and would like to play Dusty. Here is the form, slightly modified for my purposes.
Username: sumashira
Animal name: Dusty
Animal age: 6 months
Gender: male
Animal: African Wild Dog
History:
Mate: --The pups' mother, Misty, Smokie's sister, were in a pack together, where Misty became pregnant. One day their pack was ambushed and killed by hunters. Smokie and Misty were the only ones to survive. Months passed: Misty had the pups and everything was happy for awhile until one day when Misty decided to go hunting alone and never came back. She had decided to go out while the pups and Smokie were sleeping. She thought that she might hunt something small to bring back for the pups to eat since she and Smokie had eaten the day before, but while she had been looking for some small prey she got caught in a zebra stampede. When Smokie and the pups went looking for her later on they found her trampled body right where the stampede had been. Since that day Smokie has been taking care of the pups on her own.
Dusty is a mischievous little thing who likes to play and prank, but he knows when things go too far and can become pretty serious about making things right - for a pup, anyways.
