*Esben woke up in the old barn she had been taking shelter in. Jack was sound asleep on one of the wooden beams up near the ceiling. Esben quietly got up and stretched. Her back ached, for she had only slept on the hard, rotting floor of the barn with a few hand-fulls of hay here and there. Quietly, still aware of the sleeping barn owl, she walked across the room and down the front steps to take a walk. Her strides were quick and swift, but she was a small little thing compared to the other species of bears. Esben's favorite thing to do was race up and down the trees, coming to the top and looking over the whole abandoned village. She liked to watch as all kinds of animals walked in and out of the old buildings and walk around in the streets. Esben also loved to roam the village and talk with a few other animals. As Esben was walking, she started to remember how hungry she was and her stomach started to grumble. Esben walked around the forest, looking for anything she could eat. After a bit of walking, she left the woods and came to a clearing. Strange she thought. Esben hadn't noticed the clearing before. She had only moved in this way a month ago but she had traveled the forest for long ways. Esben took a few cautious strides, then started to walk normally. She explored the clearing until she reached an area with lots of dead trees lining the ground. Esben loved finding old trees and picking at their bark, looking for insects and larvae. She ran up to the trees and started to pick at the bark, slurping up the insects that popped up underneath. After picking at some of the dead and rotting trees, she searched for some berries, her favorite snack. Trotting through the forest, Esben soon found another clearing. She had already knew of this clearing but was excited to see that the berries were still hanging on the bushes. Esben wrapped her tongue around the berries and slurped them off their vines. After Esben had finished a while bush full of berries, she decided to head back to the barn. She trotted through the forest until she reached the edge and followed the edge to the village. Esben walked now, seeing the animals busily bustling around the streets. Esben trotted back to the barn and sat down on her makeshift bed she had slept in. The sun was falling and Eben's eyelids were growing heavy. "Well, it took you all day to get breakfast, huh?" Jack said, swooping down and lading on the handles of a rusty wheelbarrow next to Eben's nest. "Jack, let me sleep," Esben said, sleepily. Jack cocked his head and reached out with his talon and poked her stomach. "Jack!" she said, quickly sitting up. "Lets go Esben! You agreed you'd come," Jack said, with a faint smirk on his face. Oh yeah Esben thought. She slowly got up and shook her pelt. "Only this one time, Jack," she said, and slowly walked towards the entrance.*
