Wild horses are the history of the west. They were here first, and they have always been here, even if no one has seen them. Some lay in hiding with their bands, while others roam on the open land. Mountains, plains, deserts, forests, they are there. Even if you can't see them. They are there

The Story Behind It All:
"Decoy, lets go!" a young human grasps the mane of her beautiful stallion. She is without bridle and saddle, using only her legs and hands to stay atop the majestic beast. They often went for these rides, into the mountains of Wyoming. They would stay out all day, only to return by the light of the moon. The young girl and her horse were together always. She was with him everyday for as long as possible. Today, they explored a new trail. This trail was long and rocky, up into the mountains. The stallion powered himself quickly with his strong legs. The girl leaned low over his neck, becoming one with him. She closed her eyes and let him carry her into the unknown. After a little while, she felt his stride falter. Her eyes snapped open and they were falling. The mighty stallion tried to stay up right, but the girl couldn't hold on. Her hands and legs slipped and she tumbled from her horse's back.
"Decoy!" She yelled to her stallion and he spun, trying to catch her, but instead, falling with her. They tumbled down a small cliff, Decoy still trying to save his beloved human. At the bottom of the cliff, Decoy got up and went straight to his girl. But to nothing, would she wake. He nosed her and whinnied desperately, but to no avail. His human would never again wake up. He stayed by her for a long time, nickering and whinnying to her, but she would not respond. He laid next to his girl and stayed there, baring his teeth at anything that got near.
Soon, a human appeared. Decoy recognized this human as his human's Sire. He watched the human come near. Decoy pinned his ears back, even though he knew this human.
"Decoy? What is going on? Where is Loreann?" Decoy snorted with his ears still pinned. Loreann's Sire would take her away from him. He could not, would not, let that happen. Loreann's Sire stopped dead when he saw Loreann's lifeless body. He looked from his daughter to her horse. What had happened here? He thought. He tried to kneel next to his daughter's body, but Decoy stood and snaked his head out at him. Loreann's father stepped back in surprise. He realized what the horse must think.
"Decoy, I want to see her. Please let me see my daughter, boy," Loreann's father knew that his child must be dead, but still wanted to see her body. He knew the horse would protect the girl from all harm, but couldn't understand why Decoy was this way to him.
Decoy snorted while he stood, keeping his filly human's Sire away for now. Soon, Decoy stepped back to show the human his foal, but would not let him get near. When the sky grew dark, the filly human's Sire left, only to return at dawn with a truck full of stones. Decoy knew what was going on, for he had seen many a horse buried this way. This was the only time he stood back for the filly human's Sire to get close. Decoy watched with his head low, once in a while nosing a stone near his dear human's body. Finally, his human's Sire placed one last stone, covering the last spot of the girl's tee-shirt. Decoy watched the human step back and turn away. Loreann's father got into the truck and drove away, while Decoy lay next to his human's grave. For days, he stayed there, guarding the grave.
Often, people say there is a phantom stallion that roams the mountains. Many think this story is a myth, but some know better.

Where is this "Phantom" stallion and his herd?


There are spots where there are small groves of pine and spruce just a little bit lower in the mountain. There are also 'secret' caves that block a little of the icy winds that blow in the valley/canyon.

W I L D H O R S E F A C T S


A band of horses, which is also known as a herd, consists of 3-30 mares, (rarely that many) their foals and a single dominant stallion. There may be a few stray stallions who tag along with the herd but will be snaked from the herd if caught mating with the dominant stallions mares.

A Band stallion is the 'dominant' stallion of the herd, so to speak. He does not lead the herd, nor is he the leader of the mares. He's not boss. His job is to keep the herd safe from predators and humans, and will chase his herd away from any danger. When with humans, sometimes the stallion will cut away from his herd and lead the human someplace else and after while when he knows he's lost the man he will return to his herd and will keep pushing them. With predators such as, Wolves, Bears, Cougars, etc he will chase his herd to saftey. Stallions may chase off a mountain lion if it is young or ill, but if not he might kick at it once to distract it while his herd takes off and then he will follow. His main job is to protect the herd and mate with his mares to produce foals and make his blood line bigger. A Band stallion will often depart from his herd in search of good meadows and water and then he'll return and snake his herd toward the area, his lead mare up front.

A lead mare's Role is to lead the herd, She is the dominant or alpha mare of the herd. She is usually the oldest and wisest. A lead Mare will lead her herd to safety, and when her stallion has found a good meadow or river or whatever, she will lead the herd up front to the area. The lead mare gets the best drinking spot, and the best grazing spots. Her foal however is not always the most dominant of the lot. The lead mare is not the stallions favorite mare, in fact Stallions don't have lead mares. Lead mares are sorted out through challenges, mares don't get violent, mares will nip, squeal and now and then kick the air, but won't actually draw any blood from other mares. After about 10 minutes, the older mare will win, the younger mare will back away accept her spot. If a horse in the herd (mare, filly, colt) is being disrespectful, or simply being annoying, the lead mare will snake him or her out of the herd and she or he will not be allowed back into the herd until the lead mare allows them. If she snakes them out the band stallion can't and will not do anything about it. The lead mare also has every right to snake her band stallion out of the herd, if he is young or simply cocky and disrespectful, the lead mare will chase him out and won't allow him back until she decides. If she doesn't want him back, she will start calling out to bachelors alarming them there is a herd needing a stallion here. And the band stallion can't do much about it. He will simply have to try and fend away stallions until his Lead lets him back in.

Horses do not have crushes or mates. A stallion will mate with every mare in his herd. If a mare joins his herd with another stallions filly, He will keep that filly, and he will mate with the foal once she reaches the age of two. If a Mare joins a herd with another stallions colt, the stallion will kill the colt because he is a potential threat to his herd and will be another bratty bachelor pestering his herd when he's older. MAres also do not get jealous, a stallion will mate with his mares infront of his other mares, he won't take her somewhere quiet away from the mares, stallions don't care about that, nor do mares, he will simply mate with them.

Snaking is when a horse lowers his/her neck and nips at another horses hips, flank and hocks and drives them somewhere, wether towards a herd, or out of a herd. When a stallion snakes, A mare might kick a few times but unlessthe stallion is 5 years or younger, the mare will adventually give up and will simply go where the stallion wants. With mares snaking out other horses, the more the horse fights, the longer the lead mare will keep the horse out of the herd.

A Bachelor stallion is a young male (or old) whom does not have a herd, often he will join up with what is called a Bachelor Band, which is a band of stallions with an old male whom is between 13 and 20 years who leads the herd the rest of the males simply follow him like his mares. In spring, the older bachelors of the herd will depart and look for mares, if he finds no mares over spring and summer he will return to the bachelor band and stay for autumn and winter. Some lone bachelors, (2- 6 years) will tag along with a herd of mares and their stallion. Often when the band stallion leaves to find food, this young male will see if he can mate with some of the stallions mares.

Horses are Flight animals, they will not go looking for trouble, they will run away from ANY danger they can sence. Horses are also Claustrophobic and won't go into caves. If its a meter long cave like mostly a small shelter that only one horse can fit in, or mostly stand under like a Rock roof, a mare will often foal under those.

Twins in foals are very very rare. If a Mare has triplets, both mare and all three foals will DEFIANTLY die... Twins are very rare, if a mare has twins, either she or both foals will die. On the rare rare occasion will both mare and foals live. Most of the time one of the twins will die or both. If the mare dies when she has twins, the foals will adventually return to the herd and soon die because none of the mares will accept them because they will have their own foals and if they don't have a foal theyn they don't have milk. On the off chance will a mare who's foal has died will she accept a foal of another mare. If it is twins she will likely accept her more favored foal and then let the other die for twins in winter won't survive. Foals don't always survive birth, yes sometimes you might need to make your mare birth to a still born, have your foal die in winter or something. Life is cruel.

Lone mares will survive late spring and summer alone, come winter they will start searching for herds because they will not survive on their own. Mares do not get annoyed when a stallion snakes them. And don't ever get away from stallions unless he is younger than 5. If she is snaked she won't care, she might be annoyed for an hour or so and then she simply won't care.

Older mares that can no longer produce foal's will sometimes try to steal foals from other mares. If this happens, a stallion can't and will not do anything about it. The mother can try to take her foal back, but if she fails the foal will die.

When a stallion who had a herd of any amount of mares, if he loses to another stallion then all the mares that belong to the stallion will be given to the stallion who won the fight.

All stallions start out as bachelors, all mares loners. Bachelors begin in a bachelor herd lead by one dominant male. Should they leave without the dominant males knowledge, they will not be aloud back in if they don't find a herd and need to return for winter, that, they will die through. When a bachelor wishes to leave, they must make sure the dominant male knows and then they can leave, that way, if they don't get a herd, they'll be aloud back into the bachelor herd.

should the entire herd find a few mares or even just one, if the dominant male wants them, he gets them. The others may try to challenge, but rarely will they succeed. The next oldest male is then lead of the bachelors and looks out for them taking the same role the previous dominant male did. Put chocolate in your form if you read this entire thing

Stallions fight all year round, they are more dormant during winter, only fighting each other over grazing grounds or water streams. During Spring and summer, Stallions fight constantly, but again, they don't get that violent, people say stallions rip shreads from one another, that is wrong, Stallions bite, scream, kick, rear, but they rarely cause major injuries. Stallions may leave fights with maybe one bad wound, but it won't be bad and the worst a fight will do too stallions, will make the loser lose his mares, They, will also be tired after the fight. When Stallions fight, the loser will back off, all of the losers mares, will then be taken by the winning stallion. The winning stallion will then need to be more cautious with his mares if he then has a large herd.

Bachelor Stallions spar constantly, when in a herd if they do not sucsessfully gain mares that spring, during autumn, and the next spring, they will fight and argue. Come spring, some bachelors will remain together, usually young stallions may gang up on older stallions herds and try and take their mares, but will rarely succeed in gaining a mare.

p e r s o n a l i t y . Riva is very domiant, only making a good leader she will push others around and will make sure each mare knows their place. Riva needs snaking and will only join a herd by force, Riva can be very disrespectful and will be if she is not lead, however she will often run off during the night when her stallion isn't looking or is sleeping, she can't stand following and she will not listen to the dominant mare unless it's important, in other words, just submit to her and face the fact your below her. She's not a friendly horse to horses whom don't know their place, get on her good side, and she's as sweet as anything and will protect you. She can be loving and friendly, and in the beginning she will warn new mare with a nip, but if they proceed to try to be lead she will get far more aggressive, not pulling heads off, not drawing blood, but it may come down to she will get rid of this mare. Trust this mare with your heart and soul, as you will regret it if you do not. However, she can also be one of the most affectionate and sweet caring mares in the world.

Flame has a unique personality, he's almost always smiling, not in a creepy way, he has other emotions, and he shows them, but he loves being happy, therefore he's almost always seen smiling, he enjoys the idea of a happy life, and likes others to know he's happy. But when he's angry or sad it's clear, horse can't cry, but when he's upset he isolates himself from others, he may snap at other horses, mares, foals, it really doesn't matter. And when he's mad he often ignores everyone, but he sees this is better than taking it out on his mares foals or whatever. Sadly, unlike some stallions, Flame doesn't talk to his mares about his feelings. Being young, he is still learning, and doesn't expect to keep a herd for long, so his aim is to get mares and cover them before another stallion takes them away from him because he is an easy target being so young. He will always do his best no matter what but be ware for he will not be heart broken if you are taken from him because it will be what he is expecting. He's not stupid, so don't treat him like such, he is young but he's talented quick, maybe not the strongest but his speed comes in handy by dodging attacks better than most older stallions.

p e r s o n a l i t y . Facility is a kind little mare, very adoring, she'd never hurt a soul. She's also quite shy, and quite nervous bout things. She's about as hard as stubborn hard to get mare is to get into a herd because she's so nervous she just runs off. She sees stallions as predators because her father wasn't very kind. She runs from them and was never succsesfuly snaked after she turned 3 because she was just so freaked out it made her faster. However if your certain you want her, you'll have to deal with running... alot of it. Facility tends to run faster when chased and needs to be cornered which doesn't make things better but it's the only way your going to get her to stop... or run her into a river, she hates water. And therefore she'll slide to a stop and won't move from her spot if near the river. Once in a herd she's not at all dominant, she's submissive and she won't defend herself and if, say a stallions asks to cover her, she won't do anything.. she won't say no if she doesn't want a foal she'll just go stiff and let him. She's not respective about herself, and doesn't give a stuff if anything happens to her. She feels like no one would care anyway, she was raised by a cruel stallion and feels all stallions are cruel and don't care about their mares or anything
h i s t o r y . Facility was born into a, 'normal' herd, a stallion, one who was big, bulky, strong and round 16.3 hand Quarter horse and didn't really care for his mares, with about 14 mares. She was born and thought she'd have a fun easy life... Facility never played with her brothers and sisters... infact no foal played with anyone, they didn't even know how to play. A month later, a mare and foal came past and Facility's father made them join. The foal who used to have it's own herd with it's mother before the herd perished, played with every foal. It came up to all the foals and asked to play, each foals answer was 'what's play?' a week after the mare joined, Facility's father Shadow, made the mare watch her foal get killed before her. He grabbed it's neck and tossed it around and then ditched it at a tree then trampled it. after he made sure the foal was dead he ditched it in a river then went to the mare and forced her to be covered. At the age of 1, unlike most stallions, her father drove out every colt and filly out. They'd only been weaned half of them, and still were developing and had no idea how to protect themselves... He favored his lead mare, Facility's mother and lucky for this filly she was able to learn how to defend herself... Her mother had never met another stallion who was kind.. all were as cruel as Facility's father. Her mother said that stallions were predators, they can't be trusted and they have no hearts, they see mares as DNA transfers and that there only use is to make foals..... Her twin brother, Facility's mother took her twins to the fast flowing lake, and there was only one way across.. only foals could get across. there were fair sized flat rocks they had to jump on. Facility's brother decided he'd go across, his mother said be careful, she knew it wasn't safe but foals had always made it across.. not one had ever died.... not one. Facility's brother took one wrong step... and fell, he was pushed down the river, Facility's mother tried to go after him, her father came over and said the colt was a pathetic excuse for a colt anyway and he'd die... Facility's mother didn't fight back at all.. but since then Facility doesn't go any deeper than her hocks

p e r s o n a l i t y . Scarlet can be quite dominant, she's very sweet however and will try her best to be polite and obey her leaders. She has trouble being a random mare in a herd and better as a lead however she can defiantly learn to become one. Though quite dominant she's very sweet and very kind and will always say so when she's done a wrong. She will always try and apologize to ones she hurts and if she feels unwanted within a herd, she'll either crumble or wait till no ones paying attention and she'll turn tail and leave. She doesn't like being unloved and can't always understand why... but she feels it's because she's not a mustang, because she's a Pintabian, no one wants her. they'd rather have a scrappy looking mustang and so she won't actually defend herself much with stallions. Unless she doesn't know them, Normally she's a 'snake me' kind of mare and you have to snake her to get her into your herd, she's not a troublesome mare but she makes it hard for you to get her
h i s t o r y . Scarlet grew up in a normal herd, daughter to Raven. Soon she met katy, they lived in the wild for ages until a boy came along. Katy and Zach soon fell in love and Scarlet met quite a stallion, he was called by decoy. One day katy had an accident, Scarlet went off a cliff and barely made it back to a ranch. She soon passed out and presumed dead. But hours later the mare woke once more, alive, she was cared for intensely then set free. She found Katy and zach, they were seperated. She then returned to the wild in search of a herd.

She acts per usual around Shiloh, only because Shiloh has told her off before and she see's no point in trying to act helpless around her. But with everyone else, she puts on a show.

p e r s o n a l i t y . Decoy is a kind and gentle soul...usually. He was born and raised among humans, so he acts somewhat different from those who were raised wild. He tries hard to keep everyone safe and usually doesn't mind other stallions. As long as they don't try to steal his mares, that is. He is good in a fight, but not as good as he was a few years ago. He misses his human girl severely and even Zachary, whom he doesn't see very much anymore. But, that doesn't stop him from taking care of his herd. He is willing to take anyone in, as long as no harm comes to his family.

p e r s o n a l i t y . Shiloh can be sweet and loving, but she can also get very defensive. She's a tough mare to talk to sometimes, but if you're her friend, she'll trust you with everything. She has adopted a young filly named Masquerade and is still very protective of the filly, even though she's a yearling now. She is also very protective of her new filly, Sorrow's Angel. If you can't already tell, she's a very protective mare, no matter what.
h i s t o r y . She was born and her dam died, but she was adopted by Decoy's sister, Maria. Maria raised her, though she isn't fond of the mare. She always thought of Decoy and Riva as more her parents. She met Sorrow and fell in love. She was his from the start and she will never leave his side, if she can help it.

She follows him around everywhere, tugging on his tail and trying to play. She hardly ever speaks though, and only plays with Sorrow and Masquerade. She doesn't like to be left out, though. If Masquerade goes off and Angel thinks she should tag along, she does.
