No I didn't take it that way at all. I read that she was either avoiding the question by talking about the past. Or saying no to respect in their ways by talking about eating in a order. If she wants then to join. Then they will eat freely when they want as long as they hunt. Kind of like the warriors series~)

Idk if "the old ways of the alpha" is referring to the way Koga wanted to be treated or if its about the eating rule. Also the old ways might still be in effect or they might not. When she says i respect loners, it sounds as if she'd make an exception to the rule. Either way Masons just being optimistic and hopes his alpha does change. Wow I'm getting caught up in this XP))
