Welcome to Greenspring Equestrian Center, an expensive 200-stall stables that has produced some of the most successful riders and mounts. Nestled on a plot of 600-acres passed down in the Vanderbelt family for generations, this newly renovated stables has been the topic of countless press and praise since it's grand re-opening in 2009.
And this year, to celebrate the stables’ 30th year in operation, the Vanderbelt family has taken in a team of riders to train for the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in beautiful Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Each are able to ride one of the lesson horses or ride their own, but must undergo extensive training 5 times a week. Training consists of horsemanship, show jumping, dressage, and cross country. Students are also taken to multiple local, state, and national shows to further develop their showing skills. However, at the end of the training and competition period, the students must undergo various tests to determine if they are ready for the Olympics.
Will you make it onto the team?
The Stables
Now, would you like to begin your tour of our grand facility?

When you first walk into the center, it's hard to miss the pure craftsmanship of the building. Our beautiful stalls have more than enough room for even the biggest draft horses, with only the highest quality bedding maintained daily by our remarkable staff. They are equipped with a technologically advanced watering system that automatically refills with cold water when it reaches a low point, haynet, and saltlick for your horse's entertainment. And for the nervous horse owners, each stall has a camera that streams directly to the office computer where your horse can be monitored 24/7.
Stalls

Our washstalls are also well maintained. The walls are high enough to prevent spray from one stall to the next, but allow for easy conversation between riders. Also, each stall has it's very own cubby where a rider is able to keep their tools for easy access, though we recommend putting your name on your things to prevent any confusion. Stainless steel rings securely hold a thick leadline in place to secure your horse to.
Washstalls

The tackroom occasionally serves as a lounge for the riders as well. Upon arrival, it is up to the students to decide who gets which cubby; though there is enough for both our students, boarders, and any staff who rides; where they can put any gear that they may have brought with them. In the center of the room the two islands also serve as storage for any products that can be used by anyone.

Our indoor arena has to be the pride and joy of the entire facility. A wall length mirror is positioned on the far side of the arena, just below a beautiful array of windows that allow for natural light in the daytime. There are lights in the arena, however. This arena is mainly used for dressage practice and indoor show jumping practice.

The quaint lounge is right off of the arena, where both riders and staff come when they need a break or for a snack. The fridge is fully stocked with everything you could ever crave, though there is a phone where you can order food if you do so desire. The lounge also has a small flat screen tv mounted on the wall with a DVD player.
Lounge

Up the grand staircase is where you will find the offices of all the Greenspring staff. This area is largely unknown to most students at the stables, and is only visited in emergency cases and thus the stairs have a rather ominous reputation associated with them.
Stairs & Office

The outdoor arena is where horsemanship and show jumping lessons and practices are held. It is also where the show jumping part of the "final" will be held after all training is complete. This expansive arena is actually not fenced in, though there is a slight border around the edge, and adorned with a mirror along the length of one side.
Outdoor Arena

And last but certainly not least, the cross country course. This 4-mile Olympic-style course is one of the longest and most difficult in the state and is only open to riders once they have been properly evaluated by a trainer. A rider may only ride this course twice a week, if they see fit, as to refrain from harming the horse. The course runs through a very hilly area followed by a forest and then flatland, where most of the water jumps are. There are a total of 20 jumps, some a series of jumps, in which all are marked accordingly.

Horses for Sale/Lease
All horses listed below are available for lease or sale to the students.
.: Dream A Better Dream:.
Lullaby, as she is called at the stables, is a beautiful 16.1hh thoroughbred mare. Originally a racehorse, this cremello girl was taken off the track at the age of 2 and trained as an eventing horse. And it is there that she has found her niche. Over the years she has served as both a lesson horse and competition horse for many riders and has taught riders from beginner to advanced levels. She is an extremely quiet mare that is almost always supple and responsive, has an innate desire to please her rider, and is very respectful. At the current age of 14, she has been trained to Olympic level dressage, show jumping, and cross country; though it is clear by her performance that she is a dressage horse at heart.

.:Beautiful Nightmare:.

Teddy is one of the few akhal-tekes you will find that are extremely talented in the eventing world. His striking buckskin coat, and petite 15.3hh frame, make this gelding a show stopper in the show arena. He was just recently purchased by the Greenspring team from a previous well-known eventer at the age of 12. He is recommended for only intermediate to advanced riders as he does take a lot of experience to ride. This rowdy and mischievous gelding will take any chance he gets to test his rider, whether it be through bucking and ignoring signals to completely stopping and refusing to move.

.:The Best of the Best:.

This 15hh chestnut warmblood may seem like any other mare on the show circuit, but you would be sadly mistaken. Adele truly lives up to her show name and was Ryan Vanderbelt's mount for his most recent trip to the Olympics. The two came home with gold medals in both dressage and cross country. This 13 year old mare still has the energy of a filly, and it shows. She can be extremely rambunctious when jumping, but is usually very obedient and patient under the saddle, which makes her a perfect horse for riders from beginner levels all the way to advanced.

.:November Rain:.

Sammy is the epitome of an Irish sport horse. This 16.2hh gelding is extremely athletic and well-trained, and has also gone to the Olympics with a previous owner. Because of the high levels he competes at and the large amount of the training he received over his 12 years, the gelding is overly sensitive and responds to the slightest of cues. This makes him a dream for dressage riders, but he requires a rider that is extremely quiet in their seat for show jumping and cross country. He is also very lovable, completely content with snuggling with his rider instead of practicing.
Current Rider: Open
.:Somebody's Heartbreak:.

Carter is the warmblood you grew up riding, just with significantly more training. At the age of 18, he is one of the oldest of our lesson horses but you certainly couldn't tell unless you looked at his teeth. This 15.2hh seal brown gelding is one of the top lesson horses in the program and has had a fulfilling career competing in Germany. He is a very laid back horse, however, who will need a bit of encouragement to get going.
