"Oh." Ella called in reply. She looked down at her horse and noticed he was sweating heavily. She walked him out back to his stall then dismounted outside, untying the neck rope. She asked for him to follow her to the wash bay. He followed obediently. She grabbed the hose, rinsing him off. Unlike some horses, Ted loved his face to be washed. He put his head down low as she washed him all over. Ella grabbed a sweat scraper and flicked away all the excess water. She then opened his stable door and he went in. Ella latched it behind him then went over to the stallion yards to visit Falcon. The stallion was muching on a pile of oaten hay when he heard Ella approach the gate and enter the stable yard, molasses, a roller and side reins, a saddle pad and a bridle in her hand. He walked up to her, knowing he could trust her. Ella set all her stuff down by the tall fence then went to unrug the stallion. When he was unrugged she patted him all over and put small amounts of pressure on his back where the saddle usually sits. Falcon stayed still. Ella grabbed a lunge whip then walked away, clicking to him. Falcon followed. Ella was proud because Falcon had latched on to the basics of liberty quite well. Ella grabbed a saddle blanket and offered it to the stallion. He sniffed it all over. She then rubbed it all over him, praising him as he stood still, not spooking. Falcon shied a little as she shook it, but as he got accustomed, Ella leaned over his back and flapped it on the opposite side that she was on, as it to simulate the saddle pad being put onto the back and the other side falling over onto him. He stayed perfectly still. This time, Ella put the saddle pad on his back and took it off and on many times. She did it on both sides, then left it on his back when she was done. She did the same thing with a roller, and once it was tightened she got out the bridle. Falcon heard the farmiliar jingle of the bit, and he shied, but Ella came over to him and shook it all around him. She then put molasses on the bit and offered it to him. He took the bit and she slid the headpiece over his head, fixing up his forelock then doing up the throatlatch and the noseband. He was surprised, but he did not spook. He trusted Ella enough. Ella led him to the roundyard.
Once they were in the roundyard Ella tied the reins around his head. She knew falcon had experience with the bridle, but she lunged him for 10 minutes without side reins. She then put on the side reins tight enough so he would go into a frame. Falcon didnt fuss. Ella lunged him for a while. She knew falcon would have to be taught basic dressage before he was ridden over jumps. He wouldnt need to be in a frame when he jumped, but it was handy for him to know what to do. Afterall, showjumping is dressage with speed bumps. Ella never lunged with a lunge line, unless she was lunging in a arena, or it was needed for the exercise. Ella then set up a small 20cm jump in the round yard. She was going to remove the roller but she decided not to. Falcon had never been jumped by a human before- ridden or non ridden, but it was like he knew exactly what to do. He paced himself perfectly, and soared over each jump at the right height. Not too low and not too high. Ella had a feeling that her mum had made a perfect choice in buying this horse. She kept raising the height until she got to 1.9m. Falcon jumped it easily. She decided that was enough for the day. She walked him out and put away the jump. She then hosed him off after un-tacking. She patted the horse then turned him out in his yard. When she left, she opened her phone and called the farrier, asking if he could come in tomorrow to shoe Falcon, Ted and a few other of her mum's horses.
