The appaloosa mare stood under a shaded tree, head hanging low, eyes half closed, ears flicked back as she rested. She wasn't content though, wasn't relaxed, as much as it looked. She was still grieving over the loss of her filly who died only at few days old last winter. It was a premature labor, in the middle of winter, at the coldest day it could be. The poor little foal barely made it the first few days, and Destiny stuck by her filly's side at all hours until she knew she was gone. The mare was traumatized, occasionally looking up and whinnying to see if her foal was at her heels, but found nothing. She sighed, and gave a half hearted flick of her tail. Riptide, her two year old son was close by though. He had grown into a fine colt, muscular and handsome. He came back to her at times and sometimes stuck around for a few days to keep her company, but as he matured, she saw less of him. He was after mares now.

Riptide grazed a couple hundred metres away from his mother who stood under a tree. He watched her as her head jerked up and she called, but dropped her head again when she got no answer. He looked up quickly, hearing another rustle through the tree line. He stared, his jaw still moving as he chewed on his mouthful, well-defined ears pricked. He caught a glimpse of a horse moving silently through the thick wad of trees. He swallowed, stared, looked back at his mother. She also was aware of the presence, but was uninterested. Riptide turned his attention back to the horse and whinnied as she disappeared thicker into the trees. He tossed her mane and leapt from standing, into a canter - and went to investigate.
