Alpha Pair:: The alpha pair are the mates that are in charge of the pack. The male of the pair typically has more direct charge over the pack and is often more respected among them, while females will probably hold no actual authority, although they do have a higher standing in the pack than if she were a hunter. If an alpha male is killed or if he so chooses to retire, the female does not take over the pack. She will return to her former rank and the next male heir and his mate will come into power over the pack. The second pups of the alpha are born the eldest or more responsible male of the litter will be reared to take his father's place as alpha. The other males are also trained, in the event of the primary heir's death. If a litter is comprised solely of females, none will be reared for the position of alpha.
Beta Pair:: The beta pair are second in command under the alpha. The beta male is more often than not the son or brother of the current or more recent alpha. Unlike the alpha female, the beta female has a significant amount of power, equal to that of the beta male, although they are both under the command of the alpha. Pups born to the beta pair are rarely trained for the position, because the beta is chosen directly from the alpha in the event of the beta male's death. If the beta male is killed, the alpha chooses another in his place and the former beta female will return to her old role in the pack.
Elders:: The elders are the most revered wolves in the pack. They are respected for living as long as they have, and often the alpha or others will go to the elders in search of guidence or counsel in difficult situations. They are not expected to hunt, and the younger, more agile wolves are generally expected to bring the elders their share of prey. Any disrespect to the Elders always results in severe punishment, unless the elder asks otherwise.
Queens are expecting females or nursing females.
Shaman:: The Shaman of the pack is the lead healer. He or she is in charge of the health of the entire pack, and they are often known to have connections with the pack spirits, often seeking guidence from them through dreams or visions. They have privilages that cannot be taken by the alpha. They are also in charge of mentoring and teaching the other healers. When the Shaman reaches the age at which they can no longer perform their duty and are ready to retire and become an elder, they choose one of the other healers to take their place as Shaman. Once the Shaman retires, he or she loses their connection with the pack spirits, and the connection goes to the next Shaman.
Healers:: Healers are the aids of the Shaman, it is their duty to look over the pack and heal minor injuries. They are trained basic fighting and hunting skills, but nothing in depth. They must obey the alpha, unless orders conflict with those given by the Shaman. Their loyalty to the Shaman overpowers their loyalty to the alpha.
Lead Warrior:: The lead warrior's ranking is comparible to that of a general in the Army. The warriors of the pack are under their responsibility, and they create the battle plans if the pack is ever forced into war, however battle plans must be approved by the alpha. In many ways they are like a second beta, or a gamma if you will.
Warriors:: Somewhat self-explainitory, the Warriors are in charge of keeping the pack safe. They are trained in depth fighting skills and their primary loyalty is to the Lead Warrior. They are trained little in the ways of hunting, and are expected to patrol the borders and mark frequently to keep out intruders. If they find a rogue, it is their job to force said rogue into submission before bringing him or her to the alpha for judgement.
Lead Hunter:: The lead hunter's rank is similar to that of the Lead Warrior's, with subtle differences. They are trained primarily in the skill of hunting, and are the voice of command to all other hunters in the pack.
Hunters:: Self explanitory, but the hunters of the pack are in charge of bringing food into the mouths of the rest. They are required to bring food to the elders, the sick, and the nursing mothers before the healthy, and their primary source of command and leadership is the Lead Hunter. They are also duty bound to inform both the alpha and the lead hunter when herds start to move or prey becomes more scarce.
Omega:: Omega's are the lowest of the low in pack ranking. They are mistreated and often abused. They often keep to themselves and have no real task in the pack other than to assist hunters and fighters. They are often aggressive rogues taken in, or wolves with deformities that prevent them from hunting or fighting. A wolf might also be temporarily placed as an omega for punishment, however such punishment can only be ordered by the alpha himself.
Pups, Self explanatory, the offsprings of two wolves
Rogues:: Packless wolves, usually males, that cause trouble with the packs. They do not desire a pack.
Loners:: Packless wolves that are generally peaceful, usually looking for a pack.
