Winnie slowly began to nod as if to confirm the truth of Alana's explanation. "If everyone was the same, then what would be the point of life?" Winnie reflected. After some time of quiet thinking, Winnie decided to ask, "How come you know so much?"

Alana nodded and then pondered for a moment at Winnie's question. "Well, I guess because I take the outlook on everything and apply it to my knowledge, which I believe comes from deep inside my heart." Alana didn't really understand how she knew so much, she just allowed herself to speak her mind. "My mother, when I was little, taught me so much, and I guess that may be another reason I know much." Alana said with a small smile.

Winnie gave a small, tight shrug as she sat down upon the dry, grainy sand. A small frown crossed her face as she flinched at the word "mother". Winnie never really had someone to call "mum" and, for the most part, grew up on her own on the streets of Oaklynn Rivers. Even to this day, Winnie often relives that scarring day that her mum - her only family - was swept away by one of the deadly rivers Oaklynn Rivers was named for. It was a terrible thing to experience - your own mother dying in front of you while you helplessly observe with your paws planted to the ground. Winnie blinked slowly as if to clear the horrifying day out of her mind, out of her memory. "Your mum sounds like she was a very good mother," Winnie remarked half-heartedly as she peered desperately into the depths of the water in search of her mum, and the currents seemed to only deepen and fuel her living nightmare.

Alana smiled and sighed. "That she was." Her smile then faded when she looked into Winnie's eyes. "There is something troubling you, I can sense it." Alana whined a bit, worried for her friend, and you could see the worry in her eyes.

Winnie hesitated to reveal the fate of her mother. Could she really trust this dog with such a secret? "It was a lovely summer day, much like this one, when it happened," Winnie's eyes began to cloud as she relived one of the worst moments of her life, "The birds were singing, the frogs were croaking, the bees were buzzing, the sun was shining, and the water, as if it wasn't planning any evil, moved with a calm and steady flow. Everything seemed perfect, and it was. My mum and I were out for a stroll near the famous Oaklynn River; it was something we did quite often. We enjoyed many laughs and smiles there, and it was more of a safe haven from the troubles and worries of the life we endured. However, summer brings storms, and storms bring floods.
"The clouds began to set in overhead, and a slight drizzle fell gracefully to the ground. We, my mum and I, loved the way the small amounts of rain in Oaklynn Rivers made beautiful rainbows, so we decided to sit and wait.
"An hour later, the rainbow never came, but we still waited. The drizzle became rain, and the rain became a storm. It happened so quickly that there was no time to act or think. The riverbanks swelled, and the water lapped at our paws. The next thing I remember is watching my mother being swept away into the raging river, while my paws were planted to the ground like a helpless coward." Winnie held back a cry of frustration and grief, and instead lay her head on her paws, watching the water lap at them.

Alana whined and nuzzled Winnie gently. "Everything happens for a reason." Alana sat up and sighed. "You see, one thing falls, and other grows, just the same, it grows stronger and has a better chance than the first." Alana looked to her paws. "At least.. your family gave you a chance." Alana sighed again and shook her head.

"The circle of life is an odd and cruel one," Winnie remarked as she lifted her head with a slight tilt, as if to question Mother Nature's intentions.
Winnie heaved herself to her paws and gave her friend a soft, friendly nudge, "What happened, Alana?"

"Well, don't get me wrong, my mother loved me dearly, but my father, did not." She sighs and looks to her paws again. "He told me I was a runt, and my mother argued with him, but he bit her, hard, causing her to stay silent as he tossed me away from my brothers and sisters, she whined and knelt down beside me, licking me with tears filling her eyes, she told me somehow she would find a way to get me back-- father was behind her the whole time and he.." Alana felt tears roll down her muzzle as she thought of what he did to her. "He.. killed her." She whimpered. "He threw her and her head landed against a rock, and killed her." "He was going to kill me too, but that's when my little human I used to live with rescued me."

"That's terrible," Winnie exclaimed with a gasp, "I can only imagine how horrible life was with him around." Winnie scooted closer to her friend until they touched flanks; a comforting and supportive gesture to most canines.
Winnie felt great empathy for her friend and began to wonder silently about how life might have been if her father had stayed with them, her and her mum.
