Her heart gave a little leap at Ranger’s words, and the look in his eyes as he gave her a charming smile, and she quickly busied her paws in following him as he began to trot towards the tree. He looked back at her a few times, and each time the butterflies in her stomach gave a little flutter, and a little shy smile began to work its way onto her muzzle. Rose wasn’t usually nearly as shy around the other pups, especially the boys as she was more friends with them than the girls, but there was something about Ranger that made her want to grin and be shy and embrace him and talk to him and run away, all at the same time. She took the grinning action, looking up at him as he made a funny little cough, and asked her what elderberry was good for. Rose let a little laugh escape. Who knew what could come out of this brute’s mouth? He did seem a lot better at this than she was…
Focus, Rose. Mind on the job.
Well, she began, both the flowers and the fruit itself can be used to treat coughs and flu, and sometimes fever, although it can sometimes be a problem, because the berries themselves are poisonous in their natural state. The usual practice is to leave them out in the sun until all of the poison has been leached out of them, and then eat it as a kind of thick sauce, but it’s a lot of work to have to worry about. That’s why we usually just use thyme, but the thyme we have is starting to lose its potency, and elderberry keeps for longer.
As she started talking, she started to feel a little bit more normal, and took a deep breath, trying to ignore his scent that she could practically taste… She tried to move on, saying, I didn’t know you were so interested in herbs, Ranger. She smiled at him, a little intrigued that he’d be so curious. Maybe he was just trying to make conversation, but she’d assumed that her nattering on about herbs would be… well, boring, especially for the young brute who was obviously destined for something bigger. Although… a little feeling told her that maybe it wasn’t so much the herbs he was interested in. That she understood; she felt like she could listen to Ranger talk about anything - fighting, hunting, the way the grass grew … Heck, she she was sure his charming voice could make dirt interesting for hours on end. And… she’d gotten distracted again. At least her paws had found their way over the ground with no stumbles when she wasn’t paying attention.
Now that she could see the big, arching tree up close, she could see the bluish, dark berries from the ground, and even though they were a little high in the tree for her, she reckoned she could reach them. As she scanned the forest floor for something she could use as a step hidden under the deep orange leaves, her eyes caught on the little purple blooms of the ivy plant that snaked around the base of the tree. She smiled, a little huff of disbelief snorting its way out of her nose. How perfect. Maybe she could finally say what she wanted to say…
Gathering her courage, she bent forward and plucked a little length of the ivy, complete with flowers, free from the tree, before turning back to Ranger.
This is ivy, she woofed softly, her voice sounding strangely small as she placed it on the floor in front of Ranger, and looked up into the brute’s eyes. It’s good for stomach upsets and headaches, and, she said as a warm blush of red came back to her cheeks, it’s a symbol… for friendship. She looked down at the ground, a little nervous, but finally her green eyes found Ranger’s again and she found a trace of calm in his hazel eyes. She huffed out a little breath as she tried to put what she wanted to say into words.
Um… I guess, and I’m sorry for going all serious on you here, but I guess I just wanted to say that I wish I’d spent more time with you and the rest of the pack lately. After Don- her voice hitched strangely as she said his name, and she realised that she was close to tears. She made herself continue, fearing that there might not be another chance to say what she wanted to say. After he passed on, I felt really lonely, and… I just wanted to say thank you for all the times you’ve been there for me. You didn’t have to, but it means a lot to me, and I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate it. She tried to stop the tears that began to well up at the memory of how stupid she’d been, for not taking the time she’d had with her father while he was still here, and for how stupid she’d been lately. She’d had friends like Ranger right here the whole time, and she’d stubbornly refused to confide in them, preferring her own dark and lonely patch of forest. She could have been feeling this happy all along… A little tear rolled over and splashed onto her cheek.
She tried to stay in the moment, and gazed up into Ranger’s brown eyes. She wished that she could just say what she really meant, but she hoped that he’d understand.
