- the pass was filled with snow. Kione stared at it in dismay. He didn't need to try to make his way through it in order to know that he wasn't leaving from here until the snow melted; a mere glance told him that this act, heroic it might be in its sheer determination, was nonetheless a fool's errand to undertake. Likewise, he didn't need to travel north to the other exit to know that it would be similarly blocked; doing so would be only a waste of time and energy better spent bracing himself for the worst of the winter.
-----Kione was just resigning himself to a fate of waiting in misery for the snow to melt — it was settled: he was going to leave the moment he could and he was never coming back — when he became aware of a presence behind him. He had been so absorbed in his thoughts that he hadn't noticed the other loner until several moments after he normally would have.
-----He turned, forcing himself to make the act nonchalant. "Hello," he said casually, even as he warily took in the she-wolf. Luck was on his side; she did not seem to harbor any malicious intentions toward him and seemed more anxious than anything else. If she had bore him ill will, he would have been at her mercy for the moments it took for him to realize that she was there. "Bummer, isn't it?" he said, nodding toward the blocked pass. "I was hoping I could get out of this hellhole, but it seems we're all stuck here until the snow melts."
