Herd Rank Descriptions

Lead Stallion:
The lead stallion of a herd of mares is the protector and mate to all the mares in his herd. He doesn't really 'control' the mares, he simply suggests things to them, it's the lead mare's job to control the herd, the stallion is only their protector. The stallion in a herd is responsible for chasing off bachelor stallions and scaring away any dangers such as wolves or mountian lions. The stallion is also the sire to all the foals in his herd, that is unless the mares he rounds up were already covered by a different stallion. Stallions have been seen killing off any foals born by his mares that aren't his, but that is rare and only the highly aggressive and controling stallions do such things.

Lead Mare:
This mare is the top-dog so to speak. She is the leader of the herd and decides were the herd grazes, when they go to water, and where to run if there's danger. She settles all desputes within the herd, her word is law. She is more in charge than the lead stallion is. This mare tends to be very dominant, sometimes more so than the lead stallion, but that's only rarely, the stallions like to be the more dominant ones. The lead mare is the first to eat, drink, birth, and be covered when in heat.

Mares:
They are the main component of the herd, with out them, there is no herd. Normally, the first mare to join is the most dominant and the rankings lower as more mares join. The newest mares are usually the lower ranking members. It is up to the mares of the herd to deside who their lead mare is, the stallion just agrees to their decision. The mare's instincts are to group together with other mares and have a strong stallion to protect them. Lone mares don't last long in the wild, they are either snaked away by stallions or killed by predators. Mares must be in herds inorder to survive the winter's harsh weather.

Foals:
They are obviously the offspring of the mares and the lead stallion, but it is very common for a mare to be snaked away from her stallion and into a different herd while pregnant with her past stallion's foal. The foals are born around spring or early summer, their mothers go back into heat about a week after their births. All foals are kicked from their herds at age 2 or 3 by either their mother or the stallion to prevent inbreeding. The colts tend to join up and start bachelor bands while the fillies are snaked away by stallions once they start their first heat.

Bachelors:
Bachelors are stallions that have been kicked from their family herds by either their mothers or the lead stallion. Their age can range from 2 years to nearly 15 years. Stallions normally are too young and weak to start a herd before the age of 4 and after the age of 10 they become weaker and too old to do much protecting and their mares will leave them for better stallions, forcing them back into the life of a bachelor. When stallions are about 4-5 years old, they are in their prime and ready for a herd. Bachelors will challenge band stallions for their mares, or they will sneak in and snake them away when the band stallion's back is turned. Bachelors will even follow pregnant mares and wait for them to foal and then take the mare away with her newborn, starting his herd the easier way, but band stallions will attack a bachelor if he sees then hanging around his mares.

Bachelors → Having been kicked out of your old herd, you were out on your own with no protection from the elements or predators that stalk lone horses. You find a small band of bachelor stallions that will offer protection and safety, will you join this band of stallions or go and fight the world alone?

Lead Herd Stallions → Before you were a bachelor stallion due to having been kicked out of your old herd, but now you are a lead stallion of a herd of mares and your offspring. You must fight off other stallions to keep your mares and get new ones, and you must also kick out your offspring after they were weaned from their mothers, no one likes interbreeding.

Mares:

Lone Mares → You too have been kicked from your old herd by either you mother or father, or you could have just arrived in the Valley and have yet to find a suitable herd. Whichever storyline you go with, you don't have a herd to fit in with, but don't worry you will find a stallion that fits you. Once in a herd, you will become a Herd Mare. There is now a new mare herd that lone mares can join if they are lonely and want a herd, but doesn't want the drama of the stallions. You can join this herd, or be herded into a stallion's band, or you can even stay alone in the valley.

Herd Mares → Either you have just arrived in the herd, or you have been in the same herd for a while now, it doesn't really matter though, herds provide protection and safety. Only one mare will become a Lead Herd Mare, and that mare will be the one that is first to breed and birth foals, and they are responsible for moving the herd to good grazing grounds.

Foals:

You have been born into a herd or left out to fend for yourself to become a herd mare or stallion, or to become a bachelor stallion, thankfully there is now a herd full of just mares and foals that you can join, these mares will help you grow and stay safe until you are full grown and ready to leave, or you can stay, but only if your a mare, colts that are mature will be kicked out. Beware herd foals, your turn to be kicked out will come sooner or later.

Season Info

Spring -
Mares are having their foals and are going back into heat, the stallions are more aggressive, mating with their mares and snaking them from other herds to try and better their own. There are many fights going on at this time and it is dangerous for foals to be wondering around without their mothers.

Summer -
It is hot and a few mares are in heat, stallions still try to add more horses to their herd even though the mares might not be in heat. Foals are growing and becoming stronger, they are now able to travel longer distances, this is perfect timing for the foals to learn endurance, the herds will be on the move in the coming Autumn.

Autumn -
It grows cooler and mares are rarely ever in heat. Stallion's are starting to move to the valley. The lower in the mountains they are, the better their chances are of finding food and suitable shelter from the snow and winds. Foals must be carefully watched when the snows start, many will die when Winter arrives.

Winter -
It is cold and snow is deep in some areas, making it hard to move. Food is scarce and hard to find and some foals are born but might not be able to survive the cold. Older foals from the previous spring are just barely strong enough to survive the harshness of Winter, but many will still die.

Rank Descriptions

Leader:
A Clan leader is charged with the responsibility to watch over and manage an entire Clan, maintaining discipline, order, and protection. Leaders are normally granted nine lives and a new name with the ending "-star" (e.g. Firestar, Bluestar) in a ceremony where nine StarClan cats come to them in a dream at the Moonstone/Moonpool. However, a leader may not receive all nine lives if the previous leader of his or her Clan is still alive; in this instance, a leader will have a life taken off the original total of nine for every life the previous leader still possesses. Sometimes StarClan will not accept a leader, if this happens then the Clan is usually thrown into turmoil.

Deputy:
The deputy is the second-in-command to the leader, and may be considered an apprentice to the art of leading the Clan. They serve in the leader's place in situations where the leader is unable to fulfill their duties. They are in charge of organizing patrols and they are often called on by the leader for advice, but other than that, they retain the normal duties of a warrior.

To become a deputy, a cat must have trained at least one apprentice. Upon the leader's death, they become the leader and go to the Moonstone/Moonpool so StarClan can grant them nine lives. Deputies may also retire and give up their place as deputy if they wish.

Medicine Cat:
The medicine cat serves the Clan as both their spiritual leader and healer, making them akin to the idea of a 'medicine man' in a tribal society. In addition to their responsibilities to their Clan, they have responsibility to one another and StarClan. They carry out their responsibilities to StarClan once every half-moon, meeting together to discuss matters privately and share dreams with StarClan. Clan leaders often rely on them to carry messages from StarClan, as medicine cats have a link no other cat has to the deceased.

As a healer, they gather herbs and dispense them as an apothecary would. They handle diagnosis and treatment of both illness and injury for all the cats in the Clan.

In their role as spiritual leader, they teach the code, interpret omen and prophecy, and generally serve the Clan as a conduit between the earthly cats and their ghostly counterparts.

As a medicine cat, they are not allowed to have a mate or kits, but this rule has been broken by certain medicine cats. Medicine cats also exist outside of typical Clan rivalries in order to treat all cats fairly.

Medicine Cat Apprentice:
A medicine cat apprentice is the cat that is being trained to follow in the pawsteps of the medicine cat. They learn healing and spiritual lore from the medicine cat. Medicine cat apprentices also accompany their mentors in their visit to the Moonstone/Moonpool every half-moon to receive dreams from StarClan.

Frequently, a medicine cat apprentice who has full training will be given a warrior name ("-paw" replaced with another ending); however, medicine cat apprentices remain apprentices even when fully trained so long as the current medicine cat is still practicing the arts.

At the time the old medicine cat either dies or steps down, the medicine cat apprentice becomes a full medicine cat, somewhat like the leader/deputy relationship. When the apprentice becomes the full medicine cat then she/he can have an apprentice of their own.

Warrior:
A warrior is a cat trained in the arts of fighting and hunting. Warriors make up the bulk of a Clan, and provide that Clan with the protection and food supply that keeps it safe and well-fed. Typically, a cat is made a warrior at or over the age of twelve moons.

In their oath to become a warrior, they promise to "uphold the warrior code and protect and defend their Clan, even at the cost of their life." Warrior dens are very often near the front of the Clan, where they can protect the rest of their Clan from attacks. There are also senior warriors, older, respected warriors, mentioned to have a good bond with the Clan's leader.

Queen:
A queen is a she-cat nursing or expecting kits. Their primary task during this time is the raising of their kits. Some queens stay in the nursery after they have kits. They are thought to do this because they feel they can help the nursing queens. Some queens, do not feel suited for Clan life aside from helping the other queens. They most often help other queens when no milk is available, or when the mother is ill/dead. Kits are protected from attacks and the nursery is often situated at the back of the camp, away from the entrance.

Elder:
An elder is a retired warrior, deputy, queen, medicine cat, or leader who is too old or not in suitable shape to continue with their duties. Elders are taken care of by the whole Clan, and are given respect for the time they have served as warriors. They are responsible for taking the body of a dead cat out to be buried. Some cats don't become an elder only because of old age; if there is ever a condition which prevents the cat from fulfilling their duties to their Clan, it usually leads to the cat's decision of retiring.

Apprentice:
An apprentice is a cat in training to become a warrior. Their names end in the word "-paw" (e.g. Tawnypaw, Bramblepaw, Firepaw etc). Most usually are at or over the age of six moons. They have a mentor appointed to them at their ceremony and most days are taken out battle training or hunting. They are also given the task of cleaning out bedding and removing Elders' ticks and fleas. Apprentices are not allowed to have a mate or kits, likely because of their young age or not to interrupt their training.

Kit:
A kit is a cat who has not been made an apprentice yet. Their names always end in "-kit" (e.g. Dovekit, Lionkit, Blossomkit). Most often, they are under the age of six moons, though sometimes they are held back from being an apprentice for a certain amount of time, sometimes due to injury or misbehaving. They stay in the camp and are forbidden to leave it, unless accompanied by an older cat, such as a warrior, a medicine cat, or any kind of apprentice.

Warrior Code

1. Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but
your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.
2. Do not hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory.
3. Elders, queens, and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices
may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders. If any warrior or apprentice is sick or injured, they may
eat while the elders, queens, and kits are eating.
4. Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
5. A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
6. Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
7. A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice.
8. The deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies, retires or is exiled.
10. After the death or retirement of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.
11. A Gathering of all four Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night. There shall be no
fighting among Clans at this time.
12. Boundaries must be checked and marked daily. Challenge all trespassing cats.
13. No warrior can neglect a kit in pain or danger, even if the kit is from a different Clan.
14. The word of the Clan Leader is law.
15. An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win his/her battles, unless they are outside the
warrior code or if it is necessary for self-defense.
16. A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.

Warrior Battle Moves

■Back Kick - Explosive surprise move to catch opponent from behind. Judge opponent's distance from you carefully, then lash out with your back legs, taking all weight on your front paws.
■Belly Rake - A fight-stopper. Slice with unsheathed claws against the soft flesh of the opponent's belly. If you're pinned down, the belly rake quickly puts you back into control.
■Front Paw Blow - Frontal attack. Bring your front paw down hard on your opponent's head. Claws sheathed.
■Front Paw Strike/Forepaw Slash - Frontal attack. Slice downward with your front paw at the face or body of your opponent.
■Killing Bite - A death blow to the back of the neck. Quick and silent and sometimes considered dishonorable. Used only as a last resort.
■Leap-and-hold - Ideal for a small cat facing a larger opponent. Spring onto opponent's back and grip with unsheathed claws. Now you are beyond the range of the opponent's paws and in position to inflict severe body wounds. A group of apprentices can defeat a large and dangerous warrior in this way. Watch for the drop-and-roll counter move, and try to jump free before you get squashed.
■Partner Fighting - Warriors who have trained and fought together will often fall instinctively into a defensive position, each protecting each other's back while fending off an opponent on either side. Slashing, clawing, and leaping together, battle pairs can be a whirlwind of danger for attackers.
■Play Dead - Effective in a tight situation, such as when you are pinned. Stop struggling and go limp. When your opponent relaxes his grip, thinking you are defeated, push yourself up explosively. This will throw off an unwary opponent and put you in attacking position.
■Scruff Shake - Secure a strong teeth grip in the scruff of your opponents neck; then shake violently until he or she is too rattled to fight back. Most effective against rats, who are small enough to throw. A strong throw will stun or kill them.
■Tail Yank - Grab your opponent's tail and yank it with such force your opponent is thrown off balance.
■Teeth Grip - Target your opponent's extremities- the legs, tail, scruff or ears- and sink in your teeth and hold. This move is similar to the leap-and-hold except your claws remain free to fight.
■Upright Lock - Final, crushing move on already weakened opponent. Rear up on back legs and bring weight down on opponent. If opponent does the same, wrestle and flip him under you. This makes you vulnerable to the belly rake, so it takes great strength and speed.
■Half-Turn Belly Rake - Turn onto your side, slip under the opponent's belly, rake it with your claws, then swiftly turn back onto all fours out from under your opponent.
■Badger Defense: Leap over opponent, turn on your back legs and bite opponent's leg. Used only when fighting badgers.
■Duck and Twist: Simple defensive move. The cat ducks then twists around, rolling over onto his/her back, and then springs to their paws.
