people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you
cannot see something that is above you.❞

Kodiak awoke much slower than usual, the normal demands of his attention lessened by the presence of his Alpha and Beta. Of course, the ebony Beta knew he would have to attend to his duties sooner or later. It was then that he noticed it was a bit warmer than normal in his small den. Another body was present inside of it's thick walls. Dahlia's tiny body lay beside of his, her grey pelt mixing with his own. Her breathing was soft and long, meaning the small wolf was asleep. Kodiak opened his golden eyes and yawned softly. His warm gaze washed over the she-wolf's relaxed body and he began to groom her pelt softly, attempting to gently arose her from her sleep. As her breathing quicken, she let out a soft growl that caused the large male to release a soft chuckle from his black lips. "Oh, hush, darling. No need to be like that. It is morning, after all. And the sooner you wake up, the sooner you can find out if you can leave with the morning patrol." This perked the little she-wolf right up, rising her to her paws quickly. Kodiak arose as well, giving a single stretch and one last yawn before he followed the happy young lass out of his den.
The male's eyes immediately grew colder and more distant as he made his way out of the den. Only Dahlia truly saw who he was, the chuckling, happy male. Ever since the day their pack and life had been destroyed, Kodiak only ever smiled at Dahlia, his pride and joy. It was true that the male did not wish to mate with the small she-wolf, he had simply adopted her when her own parents grew too engrossed in pack life, but Dahlia was the closest thing he had ever gotten to feeling pride. He felt proud when the small she-wolf advanced past the other apprentices, despite her size. She was something HE had created. No one else. She was a product of his love and affection, and though soft around the edges, she was a wonderful product. Dahlia did have a lot to learn, however, and he was saddened at the fact that he wasn't going to be the one to teach her. Kodiak knew the small wolf wished to be mentored by the Beta, or even the Alpha, and hoped to gain a high rank in the pack. He would help her in any way possible, but the grey-faced female was growing farther away from him the more he pushed her to get higher in the pack. It was clear that she was too attached to him, and he knew that he had made a mistake by allowing her to get close to him. She was weak because of her love, and he hoped that by gaining another mentor, she would learn to be a bit harder than what she was.
Kodiak quickly pushed these thoughts aside as Dahlia tucked behind him quickly, her ears lowered in submission, her tail brushing the ground as she crouched. As Kodiak blinked his golden eyes, he realized that they had neared the Alpha and Beta. The Lead Healer was making her way quickly away from the pair, following her pups. As he looked to the Alpha, he lowered his massive head and his ears as well. Doing the same for the Beta, he greeted the pair with his gruff voice. "Good morning, Alpha, Beta. I am sorry to keep you waiting. A certain she-wolf wished to sleep in a bit more than needed." His golden gaze cast back at Dahlia's forlorn expression, to get a swift glare from the grey female. If they were alone, Kodiak would have chuckled. But now he turned back to his Alpha and Beta with indifference. "I was hoping to ask if Dahlia could tag along with any patrol that goes out today. Seeing as though she is still uncertain of what exactly she wishes to apprentice in, I think that she would benefit at learning a bit from each." Of course, the male would not reveal the wolf's true intentions of impressing the Elite pair into taking her as an apprentice. He had promised he would help, so he would.
