"It's depressing, you don't want to know."
It was during the start of the wet season that the old female cheetah licked her newborn kits. Four. The younger three being males, the eldest her daughter. Her only daugher, not only from this litter but any of her numerous litters. She took this to heart, a warning perhaps. Maybe, just maybe, this girl-kit was a sign.
The sign of her last litter.
With a shake of her head she refused to dwell on such thoughts. Names. Names were usually a happy thing to think of. She thought of her mother, how her name had came from a name resevered for small females from her father's family. A lovely tridition but she had no idea, from several males, who had fathered what kit. Artemis and Apollo she settled for the twin males, identical. Orion, a name of one of her own brothers. Leaving only the female. Names meaning Omen and Warning flew to her mind and with a low growl at her inner battle she decided Aries. Battle Strife.

The old female watched her cubs. So young and free with their Honey-badger looks still on them. Unaware of what their life could hold. She watched her female pounce on one of the twins. Artemis? The growl from the little male corrected her it was his twin, Apollo.
"My dear girl, leave your brothers alone. I belive with you they shall always repsect females," she said with a laugh as Aries opened her mouth to object.
"Mother, I'm hungry," Orion mewed, appearing his weak, sickly form for the den.
"Well, my little son, I shall have to hunt."

The old female once again watched her cubs.
They were no longer cubs. Eighteen months old they were preparing to leave her. They would ban together for a time, perhaps even the brothers sticking together.
Artemis and Apollo, identical to the last spot. Their gazes bright and claws sharp they were healthy. Muscles promentant beneath their pelts.
Orion. Smaller than even his sister he had always been weaker than his brothers. He was handsome though, with a bright, curious gaze and a sweet tempermant he'd be better off in a group with his brothers.
Aries. Sweet, complex Aries. A rivial to her brothers the old female wondered if she had done enough for her. For all her cubs.

For a distance, downwind, the old female watched her cubs. Her daughter spent more and more time from her brother. Thus leading to fights between her and Artemis. Orion would crumple, begging to stop from behind Apollo's form.
She would leave soon. Travel. Find a home. Settle. Mate. Have cubs.
Hopefully.
Hopefully all her cubs would lead full lives. The scent of lion came too close for comfort and she set off. Looking over her shoulder one last time at her cubs.
The last time she ever saw them together.
Standing, still. Quiet, no tension between them.
Peaceful.
It was how she liked to remember them.
