Horses are social herd animals that follow a leader and conform to a dominance hierarchy. For their own safety they choose to be a part of a group of horses such as a band or a herd.



In the wild, horses naturally live in an organized social group based on the family unit called a band. A band normally contains a dominant stallion, mares, and foals. A dominant stallion will be in the company of one mare or a group of mares 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. He sires the offspring, and these foals are with their band for at least one year, usually two.

A Stallion owns the herd and sires all the herd's offspring. His role is to keep intruders and predators away from his mares. When you see a group of wild horses moving across the landscape, normally the stallion will be in the rear. He usually runs behind the herd, keeping the slower horses moving and protecting the group from attack.

Usually the band has a dominant mare who will be responsible for leading the family group in their grazing. She will lead the family to the water hole and to the mineral lick where they dig for these dietary supplement. She will guide them to sheltered places out of the wind when winter storms howl.

A lone mare is a mare that does not belong to a herd, but in the spring there will be very few of these, because stallions fight over mares all the time.

A bachelor is a stallion that has not yet started a herd of his own. Bachelors will sometimes join together to steal mares from herds or will walk alone, they are always up for trouble and then to create chaos.

is a more gentle way to bring a mare into a herd, or to tell them where to go if a stallion is moving the band to a new location. A stallion will nudge the mare in the direction he wants her to go.

is a harsh way of getting a mare into a herd and is how stallions steal mares from other stallions. The band stallion will lower his head and flatten his ears, galloping behind the mare, chasing her into his herd. Typical fights can break out with this.

When a horse breaks the rules of the herd, it is rejected and vulnerable to predators. Rejection teaches horses to be submissive and dependent upon leaders for survival and food.

History: As any typical storyline - He was separated from a home he once had and is doing everything is return to gather what he once had.
Likes: Meh. Tends to keep to himself really.

History: She has been in a few different herds, but never lasts long. It seems to always push her about and she ventures forth for a new taste of life.

Personality: She is the wrong mare to mess with, end of story. She won't think twice about attacking those who seem either a threat or she finds rather annoying. She is cold, heartless, blunt, straight forward, and down right mean. She is very ill mannered and short tempered.
History: She was once used as a jumper for the two leggeds, they rode her harsh, broke her in to bite the bit that made her head held high. She met the tip of a whip several times and spurs that dug into her flesh, in order to push her harder. She was also branded on her lower hind back leg which was the day she broke loose, kicking over the kettle which caused a fire. It was her ticket to freedom.
