Scottie noticed that the pup was heading the same way as him. His long strides allowed him to keep in front of the pup, but he knew that this pup could be a problem if he continued the direction he was going in. If Scottie did find the food he was beginning to smell, and the puppy caught up to him, the pup would obviously want some, and although a quiet pup is better than a whiney one, Scottie was not one to share his food.
