The pounding of the paws behind you... the sound of crunching snow between your paws... the sound of your master calling the commands. The snow is blinding your face, and you don't know if you can move on. But you must. You love racing. It's your life. Yes, you are racing in the most famous race ever. The Iditarod. The race you have been dreaming of your whole life. The race you have been training for for the whole year. Who's gonna stop you from winning? No one.

A race over 1150 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. She throws jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills, and you have the Iditarod. A race extraordinaire, a race only possible in Alaska.

From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days.

Anchorage is the starting line — a city of over 250,000 people, street lights, freeways and traffic. From there the field of dog teams which grow in number each year, runs to Eagle River, Checkpoint # 1. After a restart in the Matanuska Valley at Wasilla, the mushers leave the land of highways and bustling activity and head out to the Yentna Station Roadhouse and Skwentna and then up! Through Finger Lake, Rainy Pass, over the Alaska Range and down the other side to the Kuskokwim River — Rohn Roadhouse, Nikolai, McGrath, Ophir, Cripple, Iditarod and on to the mighty Yukon — a river highway that takes the teams west through the arctic tundra.
The race route is alternated every other year, one year going north through Cripple, Ruby and Galena, the next year south through Iditarod, Shageluk, Anvik.
Finally, they’re on the coast — Unalakleet, Shaktoolik, Koyuk, Elim, Golovin, White Mountain and into Nome where a hero’s welcome is the custom for musher number 1 or 61!

The Iditarod is the biggest race of your life. To train for it, you compete in smaller races across Alaska.

Tustumena 200
The race is run each year on the last weekend in January, and has grown in reputation to draw competitive distance mushers from Alaska, the lower 48, and international locations. The Tustumena 200 (known locally as the T200) boasts the highest purse for a dog sled race in its class. The minimum guaranteed purse is $25,000 and has been as high as $30,000.

Starts January 20. Since this is an rp, the race will only last a day, but we say it's 3.

Kuskokwim 300
Often referred to as the "Kusko 300", or "K-300" commemorates an early mail route that once tied the settlements along the river to the outside world. Top mushers and hundreds of sled dogs participate in the race for a purse of $100,000, the largest offered by any 300-mile (480 km) sled dog race.

Starts August 14. Since this is an rp, the race will only last a day, but we say it's 3.

Klondike 300

Starts September 27. Since this is an rp, the race will only last a day, but we say it's 3.

Other Un-official Races
Sometimes, the 4 handlers will hold raves just against themselves. It could be 1 handler against another, or all 4. They will put a money amount out, and then just race. There are no real rules made for this race.

Lead dogs
These dogs steer the rest of the team and set the pace. Sometimes a leader may be unhitched (a loose or free leader) to find the trail for the rest of the team, but the practice is uncommon and is not allowed at races. Qualities for a good lead dog are intelligence, initiative, common sense, and the ability to find a trail in bad conditions.

Swing dogs
Swing dogs or point dogs are directly behind the leader. They swing the rest of the team behind them in turns or curves on the trail. (Some mushers use the term swing dog to denote a team dog.)

Team dogs
These dogs are those between the wheelers and the swing dogs, and add power to the team. A small team may not have dogs in this position. Alternatively, the term may be used to describe any dog in a dog team.

Wheel dogs
These are dogs nearest to the sled, and a good wheeler must have a relatively calm temperament so as not to be startled by the sled moving just behind it. Strength, steadiness, and ability to help guide the sled around tight curves are qualities valued in "wheelers."

Alaskan Husky

Alaskan Malamute were originally bred to be used as an Alaskan sled dog. It is generally a large and domesticated dog.

Canadian Eskimo Dog is an Arctic breed and is considered to be the oldest and rarest of the remaining purebred indigenous domestic canines.

Chinook is a rare New England sled dog breed of "in-between" type, neither a sprinter nor an endurance freighter; the original lead dog "Chinook" on whom the breed is based was a mixture from working sled dog lines and of a more mastiff-type build than most sled dogs, and the breed varies in appearance much more than most sled dog breeds and often superficially resembles a yellow German Shepherd Dog mix.

Eurohound is a crossbred dog, a mix between the Alaskan Husky and the Pointer. It has both the Alaskan Husky's sledding ability and the Pointer's enthusiasm and athleticism. It is one of the most formidable sprint-racing sled dogs in the world.

Greenland Dog is a large breed of husky-type dog kept as a sled dog and also used for hunting polar bear and seal.

Greyster sled dog is a type bred in Norway.

Labrador Husky was bred as a strong, fast, working sled dog and originated in Canada.

Mackenzie River Husky is built for heavy freighting in single file through deep snow. Less a specific breed than a certain set of varieties of sled dog types from a specific geographic area, a mix of Arctic and subarctic sled dogs.

Sakhalin Husky is rarely used and usually lives in Japan.

Samoyed is a pure or mostly-white spitz that was used for herding reindeer as well as pulling sleds.

Seppala Siberian Sled Dog is active and energetic, sharing the same ancestral base as the Siberian Husky.

Siberian Husky originated in Siberia. They were originally meant to be sled dogs, but nowadays are mainly family pets and show dogs.

Tamaskan Dog originated in Finland and bred to look like wolves. Not bred specifically for (though still capable of) sledding work, it excels in agility, obedience, and working trials.

Utonagan and Northern Inuit Dog are bred to resemble wolves, but are mixes between the Alaskan Malamute, German Shepherd, and Siberian Husky.

Margy Hammond She is a less experienced handler, this being her second year competing. She started her career when her boyfriend bought her a Samoyed as a birthday present. She looked it up online, and realized that they were used for sledding. She decided it would be fun to earn some money, and get some more dogs.

Margy is very rich, so her cabin is very decorated. She lives in a two story house, with a bedroom, kitchen, living room, and game room. She brings her dogs steak, but only lets them eat outside. She doesn't spend much time with her dogs, and instead spends her time watching tv and calling her friends. Nowadays she buys trained sled dogs from the internet, so she doesn't have to do a lot of the work. Her dogs get fed meat every day, and their harnesses and collars are leather. She only buys Samoyeds, Siberian Huskys, Alaskan Malamutes, Canadian Inuit Dogs, and Greenland Dogs.

Derek Spinner He has been in sled racing for 5 Years, training his dogs for the cold climate ahead. He raises his dogs since they were puppies, so he doesn't have a big variety. He is very poor, due to the price of paying for the dogs. He tries to ignore it, but the debt isn't going away.

Derek is very poor, so his dogs aren't pampered. But they are very loved and cared for, and he tries to give them a lot of attention. He lives in a one story house, covered by lots of trees. Inside, there is a small kitchen and a bedroom. He buys dry dog food from the store every month, and feeds little to his dogs every day. He puts water in the bowl to make them feel like they are getting more. He only has Chinooks and Labrador Huskies because he doesn't buy other dogs.

Hailey Smith Hailey has probably been doing sledding the longest. She has been breeding sled dogs for over 10 years, and has been racing for 12. Even though she has been doing it the longest, she hasn't been the most fortunate. She hasn't won a ton of races, so she is a struggling sledder.

Her cabin is middle sized, and she spends a good amount of money to have it furnished which doesn't help her financial plan. It is a one story house, with 2 bedrooms, and a kitchen. In one bedroom she sleeps, and in the other bedroom she has two padded beds for her lead dogs. The kitchen is where she makes the food for the dogs. She feeds them stew, with carrots beans and meat. Outside in the backyard, are 12 Chains for her dogs, with assorted toys, food bowls, and lots of snow. She practices sledding once every other day, or whenever her dogs want to go out. She just can't get enough of sledding. She allows all different breeds of dogs on her team.

Harry Turner Harry isn't the nicest guy is sledding history. He has been doing it for 7 Years, and he is known for training his dogs brutally. He is very rich, so he invests in whips and denim jackets. He isn't very nice to his dogs, and trains them physically. He has won the most races out of the four, because his dogs are afraid to loose. This is the main reason why he is so rich.

Harry lives in a three story house, with a front porch and a backyard fence. Inside his house he has two kitchens, two bedrooms, two living rooms, and a game room. He sleeps in one bedroom, while the other one is empty. He uses one of the kitchens for himself, while the food for his dogs go in the other one. Outside in the fence, his dogs are chained, and have a lot of chewed up stuffing. They go out to train everyday, and he always brings his whip. Most of his dogs are aggressive from the abuse, or will whine in a corner. He allows all breeds except Samoyeds. He feels they are fluffy pests.
