"You must be kidding." Ross glanced at the fast moving expanse of water. "Of course the fire is behind us, we were going away from it too, towards the river, across which was the pack, easy choice. Through burning forest to get to the pack, or through water to get to the pack. No matter how long the fire rages on both banks of the river, the only thing that's gonna kill me is hypothermia from not leaving the water, if I choose to do that." Ross snorted at Diablo, it was simple science. "Besides, who said we weren't gonna go towards the pack. My way is just much faster than yours, and quite a bit more safe than running through a burning forest." He wondered why Diablo was so opposed to crossing the river to get to the pack anyways. It wasn't as if the fire was in the mountains too, melting the glacier that gave them water... that would only give them more water, and it would put the fire out too. Perhaps he was afraid of water or something.
He looked at Seraphina, and shrugged. "It is your own choice, all of you. But hey, I know what I'm doing." Ross wasn't bluffing, this river was easily navigated until the big rocks, and unless none of these wolves knew how to swim, they'd all make it across easily, there was barely a current here, and it wasn't flood season. There hadn't been too much rain, which was why the forest had been dry enough to alight in the first place. And fire spread the way the wind pushed it. The fire wouldn't be alive for too much longer, it had run out of room, being pushed up against the water, it would soon die out. With a sigh, he glanced at Diablo. Nobody was in danger anymore, now that they had reached the river. Diablo was just being pushy. The fighter may be the alpha's message boy, but that didn't mean that Ross wasn't following his directions. If Desea wanted the pack together, he'd bring the rest of the pack to her. "You all know how to swim?"
He knew Fire was able to, he was still pondering over that fact, but he didn't know about the other two. It was unlikely, but as long as he didn't have to carry both of them at the same time. One, he could carry easily, but two... he was eyeing Diablo. Everyone was lighter in the water, even with all that fur and mass. Besides, Ross was stronger than he looked. He'd trained carrying his cousins through the water, and they'd been twice his size at the time. He glanced at the water again, calmly, then waited for their answers. If none of them wanted to swim, he supposed Diablo could take the rest back through the forest, but he wasn't sure how long until the smoke was too thick to even use the close to the ground trick.

My understanding of the geography is that Ross and his little group is on one side of the river, where the fire is, and everyone else is on the other side. The fire started on the side of the river/canyon that Ross is on, so therefore he and the others have to cross the river/canyon to get out of the fire's way. Everyone else went across already, so they're safe. They can't 'hit the pack' as you say, since they'd have to cross the river/canyon first.]
