Kimber sat between the gnarled roots of a tree, it's thing black branches stripped from it's leaves by the cruel, cold winter. Soft moss carpeted the floor, more comfortable than the hard, frozen ground. She settled down, shuffling to get into a satisfactory position. Peering through the trees, she examined Russell; his lean body, his black fur. She smiled faintly, but shook it away. She watched as a small pup tumbled from the sparse undergrowth, landing close to Russell. She tensed, wondering what would happen. Her tail curled up with amusement as the pup started growling. The surprise on Russell's face was priceless. She smiled and lay down, ready for a show.

Winter sighed and stood up. Clumps of his fur was frozen with snow, making it look hard and spiky. He shook himself, but the heavy clumps clung to his white fur. He rolled his eyes and bounded on, his stiff muscles stretching with each leap. Slowly his numb, clumsy paws warmed up and regained feeling. He smiled, his paws skidding on the slick snow as he ran. Suddenly a warm, musky scent greeted his nostrils. He slid to a halt, scenting the air. The source was a small, run down.Cautiously he approached and peered into the darkness. He could make out the sleeping form of a she-wolf. She was beautiful.
