King heard them, and he flattened his ears. He let his head hang, the water dripping down his muzzle, along with the salty tears. He finally stopped crying. He ignored Maggie. He shook off as much water as he could, then padded into the den. He walked past Xavi, stepping over her and the head and brushing their pelts. He curled into a ball at the end of his den, and kept his eyes closed tight.
