Cove
I smiled. "Well, come on," I said. I began to limp back to camp when I heard the howl. "Um, Ollie, can you lead her to camp? I'd better check this out," I murmured. I turned and limped to the beach.
Kayna
I saw Cove limping towards me. "Cove," I whispered.
"Yes, I have a broken leg and puppies growing inside me, but you look like you're going through much more pain," she said. I nodded.
"I know I'm not going to make it." I appreciated that Cove didn't object, or ask what had happened. She would have guessed anyway.
"What can I do?" She whimpered. Ignoring the pain searing through my body, I answered.
"Tell Echo that I love her and will miss her so, so much. Please, Cove," I begged. Cove nodded and licked my cheek gently. I sighed, the heavy burden off my shoulders. I felt at peace.
"Thankyou," I said. The words slurred together, and I closed my eyes, embracing death with open arms.
Cove
When Kayna's heart stopped beating, I choked back tears and began to painfully limp back to camp. When I got there, I stood at the entrance to my den and barked loudly.
"Everybody! Kayna has passed away. She fell off the cliff and hit the rocks."
Wolves put their heads down and murmured what a great loss we had suffered. Then Echo appeared at the entrance to the pup's den.
Echo
I yelped when I heard the dreadful words. Kayna...passed away... "No!" I whimpered. Cove limped over to me.
"Echo, your Mama told me to tell you that she loves you so, so much," Cove quoted. I nodded and ran back into the pup's den, whimpering quietly.
