The gentle sound of hard hooves over the snow and crackling leaves alerted Blackbird to the newcomer's presence. Not new. It could only be one: Onyx. Getting to her feet from where she had been laying on the ground with her brother, Stormbreaker, the mare walked quietly over to the leading stallion. "All good and safe?" She asked quietly, her soft voice breaking the silence as effectively as a cannon blast. "Nothing out of place?" Stamping her foot to shake off a bit of frost clinging to her knee, Blackbird bent her long neck down to breath on the frost and melt it. When the cold had subsided on her skin, radiating through her shaggier winter coat as she looked back to Onyx, turning her attention back on the male for an answer to her two questions.

Blackbird wasn't one to be ignored, but since it was chilly and night, she was tired and cold, so she would be slightly more patient because of her brain's lapse in direction. An owl hooted into the misty midnight air, and the moon shone up above through the shimmering curtain of light fog, which stretched out in all directions, crazy yet uniform. Unyielding yet putty. It was very dark, and at first when she had woken, Blackbird had had a spaz attack believing herself to have gone blind. When she saw her white back hoof flailing in the air as she writhed trying to get up, the mare relaxed, knowing that she still had her sight, but was still a bit scared because darkness offered cover to horse-eating predators, even as it provided cover for the horses to 'shelter' in.

Oh no, Blackbird thought, as her nose gave a slight twitch. I have to sneeze, Gods, I'm going to wake everyone up! Instead of sneezing full out, though, she gave a strangled little gagging noise, which only succeded in waking Stormbreaker, who blabbered, "Whoozair?" before his head sank back down and he relaxed, slipping back into an undisturbed slumber, his hoof twitching slightly, like a dog's when it is in a chasing dream. Blackbird looked back at Onyx, her brothers sleepy stupidity had drawn her attention, and she had to use all her willpower to not go back over to him and flop down by his back, so that their spines rested parralel. "Sorry, Onyx, I was distracted. So, how is it out there? All good?" Blackbird whinnied softly, temporarily forgetting what she had spoken about earlier.

Bounding away through the sweet-smelling field of wildflowers and tall grasses, the stallion looked back at his equally happy mate and their child, all bounding away through the beautiful meadow. Turning around he galloped back to them, nuzzling his mate and jumping around with his filly, just like a young colt again. Stormbreaker was warm and happy, his mane dancing happily in the gentle breeze as Vernia called, "Storm, come over here! You too, Xenexa!" And the two horses tumbled back to her, suspended in time as they played. Suddenly a gagging noise broke into it, and Stormbreaker looked around, ready to help if his mate or foal where choking. They wheren't. Instead, they smiled, and began to dissolve a mist. Happiness dissolved as they did, and his smile fell off as fast as a cheetah. "Wait!" He cried, sprinting to where they stood. He reached them and they vanished. "No," Stormbreaker whimpered, "NO! Come back! I need you! I love you! Come back! I need you, I need. . . you." But they where gone. His dream rapidly turned, the trees around the meadow became pillars of fire, the grass burst into flame and he was melting, screaming. They where around him, pulling on his mane and tail, whispering words that evaded sense and wrigled around his head like worms. "NO!" Stormbreaker bellowed, bolting upright, and, very typical, running right into a tree. Smooth. Smooth like gravel.

Standing slowly, Stormbreaker looked around him to see his sister talking to Onyx. Nothing could stop the flow of heat rusing up to his face as he blushed terribly.
"Um, I appologize. I didn't mean to bother. . . I'll just. . . I need a drink!" Running away, Stormbreaker came to a sluggish stream, the water near the banks covered in a thin layer of ice, but the center uncovered. He stamped the ice and it shattered, just like his aching heart. Taking a long draught of the freezing water, dispair washed over him like a wave. They where dead. He was as good as dead. He had bothered the others.

Would he never stop being a burden?

The small group of horses, consisting a few mares and less stallions, were exactly where Onyx had left them. Together, as they were safer so, standing in the middle of the forest, close to an old, aged willow, whose branches almost reached the ground, as if the tree spread out his arms in a hug around the earth. The young stallion had found this tree not very long ago, after he had made the herd. It was one of his favourite places.

Onyx snorted softly, before moving into the small group of horses, walking quietly not to awake some of them, as a few of them were asleep. The large stallion looked up as he heared a familiar voice, and he stopped, glancing at the black mare. Blackbird. He heightened his head, before speaking with a calm voice, with an - almost unaudible - undertone that screamed 'Tired!'. '
The deers are restless. Something is going to happen, but I don't know what.' The Friesian's eyes moved up to the sky, glancing at the clouds covering the moon. The silence that covered the forest like a blanket was... Strange. In his long years as a loner he had never seen, nor heared something like that.

Onyx' eyes caught Blackbird's, and the horse began to speak again. '
Something is going to happen.' He repeated, his eyes almost glued to hers. 'And it won't wait much lo-' He was interrupted by a scream, echoeing through the night, a loud thud and a few words. Apparently Stormbreaker had awoken. 'Longer.' Onyx finished his sentence, ignoring the stallion's apologizes.

ʞɔɪʁT
Lone Mare

Getting back to sleep was a fool's dream, as tangible as the light that slipped through the trees and danced along her flanks. And that wasn't tangible at all. Skin flicked with irritation as if a fly was biting at her withers as the mare took each step cautiously through the trees, watchful and mindful of all the sounds of the night, including her own hoofsteps. Now that the wind was back in her favor across more open ground, the scent of horse was almost overpowering, and the diversity could only mean one thing. There was a herd making use of the other safe spot in the nearby area, and if she knew herds, they weren't going to move unless they were good and ready.

The mare's head tossed and her breath raked out in a snort that was more air and huff than actual sound. A part of her, a big part, wanted to charge in nostrils flared and mane flying like the devil himself had sent her from the dark forest and spook everyone away from the area. But... well, a herd was more to deal with than a couple of loners, and Trick wasn't sure if she could handle horses of the kind of health she was scenting if they tried to turn on her.

There was only one thing to do, and it wasn't fight. "Keep it," she muttered to nothing in particular as she turned and swished her tail in a flick of disdain.

The scream, though, nearly sent the mare into a real spook. Horses didn't scream like that unless something was wrong, and instinct was strong enough that the mare had already fled several yards before her mind caught and pulled her back, forcing her feet into a trampling whirl. Breath fogged hard in front of her as she scented the wind, looking for signs of fear or blood.

Nothing had changed. It was like the scream of a horse had come from somewhere ethereal; the wind carried nothing but the scent of the herd and none of them smelled as if they'd heard the noise. Trick's ears set back to her head and stayed there as the mare snorted out the scent and the lingering urge to run, forcing her hooves into a slow and careful walk.

The sound of hoofbeats was as unwelcome as the flash of gray through the trees. Instinct forced Trick back into the thicker brush as the strange stallion finally stopped at the bank of a small stream. She could see his breath fog as he cracked the ice open and stared into the water.

He was alone.

Finally, anger and territorial frustration broke in the temper the sorrel and white mare had been keeping back. Like a shot, the horse broke her cover, hooves pounding against the frozen ground as she charged the stallion. "Get away from here!"

Six ripples in the impact of my origin story.
They're more telling than you know.

Post One - Zalika + Feral

Postby apathy, » Tue Mar 27, 2012 5:00 am

zαlíkα

Placing one hoof in front of the other, the sound of screeching owls sounded as a gun shot through the air. Roaring flames managed to make the snow melt off of the ground, heart pounding as fast as it could. There was two options, die with the flames, or with the water beyond the cliff. The smoke was over-whelming, the air was grey and dull.

Perking her head up she noticed the lead stallion had returned, what was everyone doing up at a time like this? It was a long day ahead and everyone should be asleep. She's lived a long time, and she would know the fact that there were things that could harm the herd while the sun was down. But, that was why horses slept with one eye open, and slept standing up. Her brown eyes focused on the stallion as she made her way over to him, her feathers flying through the gust of wind that blew onto her. The rest of the feathers dragged in the snow. The thick coat on her body kept her warm, her tail was lifted into the air to keep it from slowing down.

Her head lowered as she glanced up at the slightly larger stallion. If you wish to sleep, I will go out on patrol. Nodding her up and down she gave a quite nicker. The sound backed up a little to give the stallion and mare room, her black hooves placed carefully in the spot to make sure she wouldn't slip in the snow. The mare shook her mane to get some of the fallen snow off of her large chestnut body. She had the same frame as the stallion, but slightly shorter.

Placing a hoof behind she peered around the herd, admiring the more stallions and two mares. Her eyes glared over at the sight of dashing eyes, the strong scent of a lone mare. It faded after a couple seconds until the other strong scent of a stallion appeared in the air. Feral. She seriously thought there was something wrong with the horse, maybe he ran into a tree when he was just a young yearling. Blinking the hard brown eyes she looked back up at the slightly large pure-bred Frisian, his black pelt blending into the shadows of the night. This mare stuck out like a sore thumb, during the day she was like dancing fire, only when the sun was out, of course.

      [ sound = a healthy horse ]
      [ unsound = unhealthy horse ]

fєrαl hσrsє

The stallion's back legs flung into the air, a loud whinny pierced through the air. His hooves pranced along the thin layer of cold snow. Many horses considered him as just another annoying colt. Who cared if he had the soul of a colt, and the body of a large stallion.

Pointing his noes towards the new smells his legs lifted into the air as a beautiful trot. Past the higher ranking horses and towards the lone mare and stallion. The mare was a rare beauty, her chestnut splotches around the cream over-coat. Although he couldn't see every detail of the mare he knew she had a temper. His ears pinned to his skull when she yelled at Storm, he took a step forward towards the creek and sniffed the air. Allowing his top lip to curl up and lock in the scents.

Please don't yell at him. The colt startled himself as he heard his voice. It wasn't like he said it loud enough for the herd to hear, it was just loud enough for the two horses to hear. Pawing the ground and bobbing his head he let out a snort. After his little show off he made his way over towards the two, his long legs placed next to Storm. Making sure the mare attacked him instead of storm. It's a stream! The herd drinks from it! Share! Didn't you learn this when you were a foal?! His ears pinned to the back of his head, he wasn't used to really yelling, and when he yelled, he was scared. Most likely scared of himself. Pawing the ground once more he lowered his head and acted like he was about to attack her.

His chicken like legs weren't strong enough to break a bone or something, but his back legs were able to knock the wind out of a horse...

Dipping her head slightly as she thought about the stallion's answer, the deep ebony mare whinnied out two, often used words: "Thank you, Onyx. I hope that it is something for the better, and none for the worse." She then trotted away to where she and her brother had been sleeping side by side. She saw the depression in the grass, for no other horse could leave an imprint as large as theirs combined. Heaving a small sigh, she sank to her knees and leaned over, folding her long, thin legs beneath her body as she lay down. Looking around , Blackbird sighed again and lowered her head to the earth, even if the scent of the soil was muted, it stll calmed her at her brother's fright. What had he seen? Blackbird shrugged to no one, and her hazy, tired mind began to sink into a deep blackness, not caring who she was, what any trouble was, what was wrong, what the bad -or good- thing the deer were afraid of was. Warmpth washed over her and she sank into a peaceful dream.

She was bounding through the sea, salt water spray flying up behind her as she kicked up her back hooves. Rolling in the surf, jumping on the sand, chasing the waves and letting them chase her. All alone. She was lonely, but she felt a sense of love around her, as if she was being nuzzled by a mate. Suddenly, a gray horse without really any shape, eye color, or distinctive features was there. Blackbird somehow knew that this was her love, her mate, her friend, even if she didn't know who he was, or even his name. They played in the surf together, and Blackbird had the rime of her life, running around with this stranger whom she loved. She was having such a nice time, and when darkness fell they lay on the beach together, watching the night sky. A shooting star fell, and he whispered in her ear, 'Make a wish, my love' then she spoke. 'I wish that I could stop time, stay in this moment forever, never stopping,' and he smiled. 'Me too,' and Blackbird felt him nuzzle her neck as she drifted off into a dreamless cycle of sleep. She drifted about in the blackness, feeling happy, as if she'd just been praised, fed something warm, run for a while, and talked with her family. Even if they where dead. But then, she thought, Isn't sleep a pathway to the dead? Aren't we half dead when we slumber, only to rise when we are awakened? Or is it just me?

The stormy gray stallion whipped around, cricking his neck as a lone mare charged him. Rearing up on his hind legs as she approached, he accidently hit her under shoulder bone, which would leave a bruise, but she'd be able to run and all that good stuff. As he brought his hooves down, he was careful to avoid her, Stormbreaker didn't even know her name, and killing one with no name was bad luck and bad manners. He landed. "Who are you?" The stallion growled, keeping out of reach for both of their safty. She didn't look like she could overpower him, but he didn't want to be a murdurer, or hurt her so much that she'd fall prey to some swift animal.

Pacing in a slow circle, he made sure that she was always in sight. A horse that charged like that may or may not be sick, injured, POed, and ready to fight. So he was careful. Finally hearing and comprehending what the mare had bellowed when she charged, he answered, voice steady,
"Why should I leave? Unless you have the foaming-mouth illness, my herd and I are going no where. And sense I see that you are well, so again, why should I leave?" He stamped his foot, it had gotten a little stiff, that hoof had stamped the ice, and it had siezed up a bit from the cold water. Going closer to the mare, he began to see what was up with his opponent.

She was obviously not ill with the foaming mouth illness, which was good. If she was, Stormbreaker would bolt in the other direction, and scream for the herd to get out as fast as they possably could. It was only safe, the mind of a foaming mouth animal was messed up, and they would just as soon turn on their herd, their family, than a total stranger oir some apparation conjured up by their own rotting mind. The mare was smaller than him, which wasn't saying much, but could probably outrun him if he wasn't careful, she looked like a runner. Stormbreaker narrowed his eyes to slits and said again, keeping his voice steady,
"Who are you, anyways?"

ʞɔɪʁT

A good smack to a shoulder was always a wake-up call, no matter who or what gave it. Suddenly, temper didn't seem to matter quite so much anymore as the hard surface of a hoof connected solidly with Trick's shoulder. But thick fur had its uses, cushioning the blow and making what could have easily been a cracked shoulderblade into a simple bruise and a reminder. Air came out of the mare's lungs in a loud and vicious snort that matched the ferocity of her teeth. The sound of teeth meant first and foremost for grazing clacking against one another was a small sound in the long run. And yet there was a power behind the jaws that made it, a warning power that seemed to say 'I'm backing up by my own choice' as the horse danced back and put distance between herself and the male at the same time he did.

Her shoulder stung, as if to tell her how stupid she'd been for getting too close. Both ears flicked hard against her skull at the reminder of her own carelessness as she tested her leg with a few hits of a hoof into the icy rocks near the stream. The ice broke easily, but the water wasn't high enough here to actually reach to the fleshy parts above her hoof.

There was no need for the strong, sharp scent of another male to drift to her for him to be obvious. Soft words and frame that looked like it had yet to grow out of youth came to stand beside the other stallion, and in that instant, Trick found her chances of winning in a fight reduced. The snort that came out of her was still fierce, but it was far less certain.
"Shouldn't a few stallions like you be looking for a harem?" A back hoof hit slightly deeper water, splashing amid the liquid that sent a chill through her as it streamed around her hock. The mare tossed her head again, nipping at the air as a warning as the gray came one foot too close. "I could care less about the stream."

They were making a ruckus. One eye darted toward sleeping shapes... too close. The lead stallion wouldn't be far behind, at this rate. Trick's eyes narrowed right back at the two stallions, coming forward a step or two and shaking out her mane. "And you'll learn my name if you can catch me!"

There was an opening right between the two, just wide enough for her to squeeze through. Trick didn't make any more small talk as she bunched the muscles in her hind legs, reared up slightly, and dashed for freedom.

He started as she whirled past him, the white surrounding his deep brown eyes showed prominantly as his nostrils flared from being startled. Snorting softly, Stormbreaker turned himself slowly around, heart still pounding in his chest, slowly rising up to somewhere in his throat, where it throbed uncomfortably. That, now that, was scary. Feral didn't seem all that scared at the sudden movement, but then again, he hadn't watched his entire family perish before his very eyes. Drawing in a deep breath of the cool air, Stormbreaker adressed the young stallion. "Thank you, Feral, but now I believe that we have a mare to find, do you agree?" Then without looking back at the younger horse, he turned away and started off at an easy trot, muttering something about not wanting his own stupid harem, why should she care? Not her bee'swax if he had lady friends or not. . .

The mare had left light hoofprints in the ground, and a few snapped twigs here and there. Luckily, Storm recognized the signs, but only just because he was keeping an especially careful eye on the trail, so close that he felt that his eyeballs would just fall out of his head! But he wasn't going fast, to let Feral catch up with him. He'd left the boy on his own, and a twinge of guilt stabbed at his concious, which in turn forced his legs to slow, and slow, and slow, and stop. The large horse turned around and called out gently,
"Feral? Are you coming?" He held back the last bit, which consisted of calling the younger one 'boy.' Sighing, Stormbreaker thought, Why am I so rude? I smacked the lady, deserted my friend, and spazzed out for my sister and the lead stallion. Now I'm on a wild goose chase to catch the mare. . . I must be absoloutly mad.

Running.

Running could be an addiction. The feel of air, heaving in and out of one's lungs. The pounding impact of every hoof against the ground and the way it pushed the body forward in an exercise that sometimes seemed like it could overtake and smother one's very life... It was a powerful high that could take away one's brain and just flood it with nothing but the need to feel the wind on skin.

Of course, the tang of danger helped.

Every piece of foliage in the dark forest shone with it's own light, encased in frost that reflected the moon's soft light and multiplied it with the effect of a thousand tiny faceted mirrors. It made the trees all around turn from dark shadows into glittering behemoths, visible past the snorting clouds of her own breath. Even as night, these trees were familiar. This path was one that led upward; if her sense of direction and familiarity wasn't enough to tell her that, it was the strain that sent an ache through her bruised shoulder and tightened the tendons in her leg at every step.

The sound of hoofbeats behind her was ghostly, muffled against the frozen ground but still there. At least one of the stallions was following her. Foolish, weren't they? One ear pointed back behind her, listening past the flutterings of her own mane. Did he know this path as well as she did?

She doubted it.

"Catch me if you can."

There it was. The yawning gap she knew well, and one of many. Muscles bunched and released, and for an instant, there was a feeling of weightlessness and freedom that could almost make her feel like she could go on forever.

Then, gravity caught her, and pulled her back down. It wasn't that large of a drop, three feet at the most, but it was enough that anyone not expecting it would have issues. Hooves sent up a spray of frost and frozen dirt as Trick landed at the bottom of the ledge and pulled to a prancing stop. "Turn back, Stallion! Go back to your herd!"

Six ripples in the impact of my origin story.
They're more telling than you know.

Stamping his large, rounded hoof on the ground with impatience, the deep grey stallion whirled back around and continued on his way, but leaving a very visable trial for Feral to follow. I'll be lucky if I don't lead hoards of predators to myself and the mare, all the mess and noise I'm making, Stormbreaker thought, a little annoyed. He left thick trampled trails of undergrowth, which was easy; tufts of his mane and tail here and there, which hurt; and even scratched up a tree as fast as he could with his back hooves and the simple art of kicking things as hard as possable to make them all broken up. Then, Storm continued on at an easy canter, checking over his shoulder to see if Feral was behind him or not, with one ear trained to the front, and one angled back a little. The deep stormy grey stallion supposed he looked rather foolish like this, but it was better than having to steal a glance over his shoulder all the time.

That was dangerous, if he got his foot or ankle stuck and broken, he would die. The bones wouldn't heal. Ever. He'd be a cripple or worse if he actually lived, which would be a miracle because some creature would want to eat him and he coundn't run away or fight. If a man's greatest fear is of falling, than a horse's is that of falling and not being able to get back up again.

As he clopped on, Stormbreaker noted that the foliage wasn't letting up, but as they had passed this area on higher ground, it has seemed to be. . . unsafe. That was the only reason that he didn't pitch head first into the deep slash in the earth, that and the fact that he had been slowing down to take a rest because he was getting tired. Rearing up with a frightened whinny, Storm skittered backwards, eyes wide and rolling from his very near escape of lying broken at the bottom of this chasm. The mare was on the other side, but he didn't dare cross now, even if the gap was very short. She could push him in, and he really would be 'dead meat.' And, Stormbreaker wouldn't dare admit it, but he was still a little shaken up.
"Does this count as catching you, miss?" He called softly, but not yelling. Who knew what was roaming around here, waiting to pounce. "Will you stop and tell me your name?" the stallion asked as he paced around slightly, always keeping his eyes on the stranger.
