do I really need to write these?

- follow all site rules -
- no people cars etc etc. these horses only predators are wolves, cougars and bears. Snakes can also kill, but so can badly placed antlers from deer or moose -
- if you’re like me and not always able to post, I understand You can make only mares so they can forever just tag along, or be aware that if your stallion claims mares,. After 1 week of no posts and no explanation that you will be afk for this time, these mates are free game to other stallions. They can not leave their herd on their own, they must be stolen. HOWEVER… if you give explanation prior to not posting, then all mates in that herd are off limits… even if there is something already organised to steal a mare, wait for the role player to return -
- foals at the start of roleplay must be 0-7 days or 8 - 12 months old to align with the start of spring -
- experience does matter when it comes to age, however, the horses breed also comes into affect. eg below -
- horses will begin to weaken by the age of 18, heavier draft mixes will begin to weaken by the age of 16 -
- mares and stallions will remain fertile till death. that said, mares may misscarry more after the age of 18, and the risk of death is about 75% more after the age of 23. Stallions may need to cover mares more times however their age will not really affect their fertility and can breed till they die of old age -
- I do expect at least a paragraph per horse, however writers block is understandable, if you don't muse, you don't have to post for all your characters -
- i will allow only three sets of twins per year, you will be required to message me. first in first serve, more than three sets of twins may be born per year, but one or both foals must die -
- no ponies or miniatures allowed period -
- must ask that you disable your signatures on this thread -
- more mares than stallions. If you make a stallion, you must make two mares -
- you can play up to 50 characters if your comfortable playing that many, but you must keep tem all active or kill some off -
- there are no crushes/mates. Stallions may have a favourite mare, but that does not mean she’s the lead mare, she may even be the most submissive -
- lead mare hierarchy works like stallions fighting, older mares will lead unless submissive in nature, if a 12 year old mare joins a herd with the oldest mare being 7, 9/10 times the young mare will back off after one dominant action from the older mare, even if fairly dominant herself -

- experience example -

12 year old stallion watches over his herd of 24 mares and 15 foals. a younger 5-8year old bachelor who seems to have two young mares has come in to challenge for some of the older stallions mares. after greeting respectfully, the fight begins. the younger stallion may appear more agile, but the older stallion has more experience and his blows will be more accurate on where he is aiming. by the end of the fight, the young stallion will back off reasonably quickly and in turn if the older stallion feels like it, will claim the younger stallions two mares by driving them towards his herd. the lead mare will be there to alert the stallion if the bachelor attempts to sneak back in, he will have about a 25% chance of success if the older stallion is distracted with his other mares. it's almost not worth it.

if there is a 2 year age gap between stallions, the older stallion will always win. this works until the older stallion is 18, then if a stallion around 15 comes to challenge him, the younger stallion will win.

Our Hearts Remain Wild - SEASONS

Postby eventer » Sun May 19, 2024 6:48 pm

xxxSEASONSxxx

summer
in summer, days grow long and hot. nights are short, but offer a few hours of comfortable temperatures. many horses migrate toward water sources or shade, seeking to hide from the afternoon sun. mares are still in heat, though by this point all foals from the previous year will have already been born. stallion are still on the search for more mares, while lead mares move the herd to a cooler location. despite the heat, summer is an active season. young stallions show off, yearling mares get whisked away, and band stallions are daring enough to attempt stealing a mare or two. rain is not common in summer, and if it does it is often a warm, heavy rain that lasts only a couple hours at most.

autumn
with autumn comes the return of cooler temperatures. nights and mornings are chilly, hinting at the freezing months to follow. rain becomes more common, and the colors of the land begin to fade. turning from dark green to vibrant oranges and reds, until the earth is taken over by a dull gray. mares are rarely in heat during autumn, but those covered in spring may start to foal. should this happen, there is a slim chance that said mares may go into heat for the remaining weeks of autumn, but may not always accept a stallion.

winter
winter. snow coats the ground, the earth is blanketed in a glistening white, and temperatures drop. foals can be born throughout the winter months, however not all will survive the freezing the temperatures. mares are never in heat, and stallions are calm, instead fighting against predators whom may use the horses's weakened state to attack. food must be dug out from under the snow, and thin layers of ice may have to broken to reach water.

spring
spring, the season of new life. temperatures rise to a comfortable level, snow melts away, revealing new growth, and animals come out of hiding. in spring, mares are beginning to go back into heat, and some late foals may even be born. new herds are forming, old ones expanding, while yearlings venture away from home to find their own place in the wilderness. rain is common, and clouds always dot the sky.

it was true, the stallion was not small, in fact he towered over a lot of the horses in the area. the dapple grey was yet to meet someone his height, and that had its own advantages. He often found he struggled to find a stallion who saw him as someone to challenge. Most older stallions around his own age, seemed to know better and left the grey alone. The youngsters like this chestnut colt, sometimes let their pride get in the way.

The tall solid stallion watched the chestnut colt grow closer, he would have been four years, five at most. Practically a foal in comparison to the large grey stallion. He pulled at some green grass before huffing out a breath when it became clear the younger stallion wanted a fight, for what he did not know, for vagabond had been separated from his mares and had nothing for the young stallion to want. Except perhaps practice. The large stallion lifted his head and allowed the younger male to approach, without mares in tow, stallions often got along well, so despite his age and size difference, the grey stallion felt no threat from this younger stallion. Long grey ears pricked together as the chestnut approached, with each step vagabond could smell the stallions scent stringer. The two stallions brushed muzzles together gently in greeting to one another, a shrill squeal from the younger stallion as he struck his front leg forward, lightly knocking at vagabonds own legs. Irritated by this unwelcome behaviour, the grey stallion groaned a low sound and pinned his ears, lunging at the younger male and snapping air at his shoulder, ramming his big boned chest into the chestnuts smaller frame. This startled the younger male and he grunted as he lost his footing on the still slightly snowed on ground. This put the younger male in a dangerous situation, if vagabond so wished, he could cause serious harm. The grey latched onto the chestnuts cresty neck and held firmly. After a moment the younger male clacked his teeth at the older stallion in submission, and vagabond swiftly released the young stallion. He watched the younger stallion run backwards out of the large stallions way and continued to clack his teeth at him. Vagabond snorted softly and swished his matted dirt stained tail. His mane was long and thick and parts of it close to his ears brushed against the grass as he grazed. His forelock hung low down his nose and often covered his eyes if he didn’t shake it aside. Often upon shaking it would become caught behind his ears, small knots in his mane were sometimes a blessing.

The younger stallion stood for some time with the older male, and vagabond made no effort to chase him off. He was no threat, and every now and then the young male would clack his teeth like a young foal simply to prove this point. It was early morning when the events unfolded with the younger make, and by mid morning, vagabond watched the young stallion wonder away.

Safira
2 Years | 14.2hh | Dark Blue Roan | Nokata | Lone Mare | Tags: open

The young, blue roan mare lazily swishes her tail in the cool spring morning as she contently grazes on the grass near some trees. She could tell that there have been horses in the general area before but none recently based on both the scents and the fact that she couldn't hear any sounds of other horses in the area. Safira shakes herself as she eventually raises her head from the grass and sniffs the air with perked up ears, alert to any possible sounds. Huffing softly, the two year old mare starts to walk in the direction of a small stream nearby to get something to drink. The young mare remains alert to any sounds as her dark muzzle drink into the cold water, slowly relaxing as no unusual sounds reach her ears.

dark brown eyes were hidden by thick eye lashes as she blinked away some snow flakes that had fallen earlier this morning. While now spring, it was still cold and occasionally snowed a little, generally now it rained however. The mare gave her a gentle huff and swayed her tail a moment as she adjusted her body, her right hind leg cocked up on its toe and bent over almost onto her fetlock due to how relaxed she was.

There was melting snow around the mare and mud, some short bright green grass was starting to come to life along with some colourful flowers. Bugs staring to come out, small animals that had been hibernating were coming out of their dens, birds started flying above and collecting twigs for nests if they hadn’t already created one. She could hear the birds chirping and more new life not too far off. A small group of deer and their newborn fawns were grazing and sleeping, some fawns trying to find their feet as they were freshly born. The smell of blood and birth thick in the air, and she could see a deer off a little way from the group had freshly given birth early this morning, blood still covering her hind legs and the two fawns bodies.

Just out from under the large oak tree that she had claimed to rest under was a stream that had begun flowing again, it connected to a river not far from here but just out of view from the clearing she was in. There were some aspen trees lining one side of the stream as well as ferns and other shrubs and grass that was growing all around the trees. The older mare had started to fall back asleep when the heavy steps of what was clearly another horse seemed to approach. She breathed in the air and noticed immediately it was a young mare, perhaps still a filly. Her ears swiveled back to listen to the new comer who had not yet seen her or even noticed her, she wasn’t surprised that a young mare would miss something like herself, for she had been under the tree for a few hours and so her scent only sat around the tree currently. With a swish of her tail the older mare turned her neck to watch the young mare, she was a very pretty blue roan mare, from where she stood the mare looked smaller, perhaps she hold grow some more as she got older. The older mare processed the idea for a moment, but quickly her maternal instincts took over and she hummed a gentle nicker as she stepped out from under the thick oak branches that shaded her body. Her ears remained relaxed rather than pricked forward, she didn’t want to concern the young mare or worry her about approaching too interested. With a soft sigh she nickered once more to the young filly and continued a steady approach. She stopped a small distance from the young filly, perhaps just out of her reach, allowing her to close the gap.

Pandora nickered multiple soft and gentle sounds, much like the fillies mother may have done when she was but a foal. Pandora had always been a wonderful dam, very affectionate and compassionate, she doted on all of her foals and had adopted multiple foals over the years, it was not something most mares did, especially when they had their own foal to nurse. But despite pandoras dominance and stubbornness, she was extremely maternal and always offered comfort to those significantly younger than herself. She swished her tail, and gently bobbed her head and clapped her velvet lips together gently twice and nickered some more gentle sounds to the young mare. She didn’t want the young mare to feel threatened and hoped that her maternal behaviour would encourage the youngster to join her.

Enjoying the gentle sounds coming from the stream along with the sounds the align with the beginning of stream, the young mare remains content, her ears relaxing. After a bit, she starts to raise her head from the cold water of the stream when she suddenly hears a new noise, resulting in the inexperienced mare to raise her head in alarm with upright ears, looking in the direction of the coming noise, nostrils flaring to catch the horse's scent. Taking a tentative step back, her brown eyes, with the right having some blue, focuses on the older horse as she starts to relax, registering that the newcomer is also a mare. Lowering her head, she continues to watch the older mare approach, noting the nickers from the mare, reminding her of her own mother that she had to recently separate from. Even though the older mare didn't appear aggressive, the blue roan mare still clacks her teeth a few times to let the mare know she is no threat before nickering back in reply, her ears finally relaxing back to the neutral position while still facing the dark mare. Safira flares her nostrils again as she continues to take in the mare's scent before slowly closing the gap between her and the older mare with another soft nicker in reply

Callisto
Mare|12 years old|15 hands|Spanish Mustang|Herd:open|Tags/mentions: Juniper,Vagabond
Callisto grazed at the edge of a wooded area, she had chosen this place for her and Juniper to stop since it provided the two of them from some cover. The grass growing around the trees wasn't particularly good but at the very least it would provide them some nutrition, at least until the fresher growth came in. The pair had only just recently left their herd, Callisto deciding to leave once spring had arrived due to a younger stallion winning a challenge against the herds older stallion and taking over the herd. Normally Callisto wouldn't have minded but this newcomer had proved himself to be incompetent. Callisto considered herself to be rather patient, and was more than willing to give others a second chance but when it came to foolish, overly cocky stallions she had none to spare. Callisto let out a small breath and lifted her head watching her daughter as she sniffed around the edge of the forest checking for danger. She then nickered to Juniper and began to walk away from the wooded area the filly following close behind. Callisto's biggest priority at the moment was finding another herd to join to ensure safety for herself but more importantly her daughter.

It was about mid-morning when Callisto caught the scent of another horse, pricking her ears forward she lifted her head up to try and catch the scent better it seemed to be a stallion. Part of her couldn't help but be relieved she was able to find another horse but she couldn't help but feel uneasy about a strange stallion, however a stallion would be able to provide them better protection. Blowing out a long breath Callisto began to head in the direction the scent was coming from which thankfully didn't appear too far. Juniper catching the scent as well happily followed along although as they got closer she got behind her mother. As she crested a hill she finally saw the stallion the scent was coming from. She took a moment to observe him noting how tall he was and the fact he looked healthy, which probably meant he could do his job as a stallion. After a brief moment Callisto let out a quiet neigh to get the attention of the stallion before waiting to see how he reacted.

Juniper
Filly|1 years old|14.2 hands|Spanish Mustang|Herd:open|Tags/mentions: Callisto,Vagabond
Juniper grazed a small ways from her mother although she was more focused on exploring the wooded area they had stopped in. She was sad she could not play with the other yearlings but trusted her mother's judgment when she had the two of them leave their old herd. Juniper was able to keep herself entertained by standing on her hind legs and biting at tree branches or sniffing around tree roots to see what animals might have passed by. She felt tempted to wander deeper into the woods but she didn't want to risk a scolding from her mother especially when she had been a bit on edge since the two of them had gone out on their own. Despite her mother's nerves Juniper had found the experience to be rather exciting since it meant they got to visit new places which Juniper always enjoyed. Hearing her mother nicker Juniper was quick to follow after her, trotting slightly ahead of her mother, the spring weather making her feel rather energized.

Juniper noticed her mother stop and cocked her head to the side confused, before mimicking her mother to see what she was smelling. When she also caught the scent of an unfamiliar stallion, Juniper stood alertly her ears pricked forward, and she let out a small snort, feeling excited at the prospect of meeting someone new. When Callisto decided to head in the direction of the stallion's scent, she let out an excited whinny and pranced excitedly next to her mother. As they got closer to where the stallion was Juniper slowed down and walked behind her mother, even though she was excited, she knew better than to go running up to strange horses. As she stood behind Callisto, Juniper couldn't help but stick her head out from behind her mother to look at the stallion.

{ 13 year old, 18.1 hand, dapple grey, andy x tb stallion | mares;; none | tags;; callisto, juniper }

{ i just noticed junipers height, horses go by .3 of a height, so 14.2, 14.3, 15.0 etc }

thick long forelock hid his golden brown eyes, after the younger male had wondered off he had almost fallen asleep, it was not until a quiet neigh echoed from the south that he had realised the true intentions of the younger stallion leaving. vagabond had been so preoccupied with sleep and that he'd managed to miss the arrival of not one, but two mares. despite the surprise, he did not act shocked, instead he took a few steps off to the side and turned his neck toward the two females. he blinked away some long mane and snorted gently. he watched the two and noticed the youngsters small frame and shorter tail, she was young, perhaps even only freshly weaned, quite often he had met mares who nursed foals right up till they were two, not deliberately, often it was because she fell pregnant soon after the first foal was born, and so she never dried up and when the second foal was born, the older continued to nurse, he had watched it happen a few times in his own herd.

knowing due to his size, seeming over keen was never a good idea, he swished his tail and lifted his top lip in a phlegmon response to the two. he took in their smell and ensured she kept them in his mind for later before he whinnied back.

the dapple grey stallion then began his short journey toward the two. as he grew closer he noted the filly was definitely more excited, that didn't bother him however, it made sense really, youngsters seeked companionship, older wiser mares knew sometimes being cautious, was a better approach.

not wanting to concern the older mare. slowed to almost a halt and nickered gently again before closing the gap, bringing is head up and down into an arch, a deliberate act any well seasoned stallion would do, perhaps showing off, but it made him look more appealing and attractive to a mare, while appearing dominant, strong to other stallions. he clapped two rubbery lips together as he gently bopped his muzzle against her, deciding to keep most of his attention on the older mare, knowing if he showed too much eagerness in the youngster, she might not take kindly, this of course was also how he would approach any mare with a foal in tow, the foal itself colt or filly, was useless to him. the filly only held use in a year or two, which why that may sound horrible to a mare if he was to put it in words, most understood. afterall, the sole purpose of being a stallion was to procreate, he could not do that with this filly. while it could become difficult as she would be approaching her cycle soon if she had not already, he had made note of her age, and with his height, pregnancy could be fatal at her age. a younger stallion would not necessarily understand this, and may try to go for the youngster first, but with age came wisdom, and vagabond knew better. so while he kept on ear on the youngster, mostly just to keep her safe, his sole attention was glued to the older mare infront of him, for if he impressed her, the filly would be simple.

the mares dark eyes watched as the young mare clacked her teeth, despite that pandora knew the filly was in no way a threat to her, she was humbled by the youngster. with a soft flare of her nostrils as the younger mare approached with a soft nicker, pandora swivelled an ear forwards, all the while one ear flicking all around listening to everything, she could hear the birds, some deer and a few other sounds that all told her the area was safe, if the sounds became silent she would become concerned.

pandora watched the mare close the gap and she remained inviting before taking a step forwards, gently brushing her muzzle against the younger mares. her then pricked her relaxed off to the side before listening along with her other ear. she gently clapped her velvet lips together over the younger mares cheek, brushing bristly whiskers across the youngster as she stepped forwards again with a gentle nicker as she tugged playfully at the youngsters mane.

with a soft sigh the mare watched the roan mare before looking around for a moment, while not concerned, it neve hurt to look around. after a moment she returned her gaze to the youngster and spoke with the softest of sounds, "hello little one." she smiled a horse smile and shifted her weight cocking her hind leg into a relaxed stance before continuing, "i'm pandora, and you love?" she watched with brown eyes keeping an eye on the youngsters own stance as she continued "you do not smell to thick of your herd, have you just recently left?".
