Lenny yawned as he filled up his icing bag, exhausted from the night before. His main actress for his short film project had bailed on him the night before, and he had stayed up way too late searching for a new one online. The results were less than satisfactory. About three hours before the start of his baking shift, he finally gave up for the night and went to bed. He took a few drinks of his sixth cup of coffee for the day and stretched his arms out before starting to frost the cupcakes.
It didn't take long for Lenny to fall into the hypnotic motions of the frosting swirl; all uniform, each and every pastry, but yet none exactly alike. This was his favourite part about his job. At least, that's what he told everyone his favourite part was. Yes, it was relaxing, like a delicious and colourful stress reliever, and yet... Lenny's eyes flicked up from his cupcakes momentarily as his boss, Ginger, walked by the other side of the table, and he found himself cursing at food cleanliness laws, wishing he could hide his blushing cheeks behind his curls. The hairnet was Lenny's least favourite thing about the job.
He took a deep breath before throwing himself back into his work, making a conscious effort not to watch Ginger move around the bakery. Lenny both admired and envied people who were out; he found them courageous and confident, more than he ever thought he could be. Finishing up his tray of cupcakes, carefully decorated with groovy candy flowers, he lifted it to put them in the front bakery case, and was immediately greeted by his zucchini, Charlie.
"My, my, dear, you are looking dashing today. Any special occasion?" He teased as he started to fill the case.

Charlie awoke shortly after Lenny left for work, xyr eyelids impaled by harsh sun beams. Xe had worked late the night before, so the somewhat rude awakening of lasers burning xyr eyes much earlier than xe intended to waken was quite aggravating. Groggy and salty, Charlie dragged xyrself out of bed, got dressed, and went to grab a cup of coffee from the kitchen. Reaching for xyr favourite coffee mug (a plain black mug with a little chip along the edge), xe noticed a sheet of loose leaf paper tucked under the coffeemaker with Lenny's tangled, gnarly mess that he calls handwriting on it.
"I didn't tell you last night because I didn't want to upset you, but Georgia quit the film. Spent all night looking for a lead actress and didn't find anyone good enough. I didn't want to tell you last night because I knew you'd be mad. We'll figure it out later, promise. I'm really sorry... -Lenny"
"You have got to be freaking kidding me..." Xe muttered.
We're already behind schedule...After steaming over xyr lukewarm cup of joe, Charlie went upstairs to the roof to feed xyr pet raven, Eleanor. The large bird croaked at her owner affectionately as xe entered the cage.
"Hey, baby, how are you doing today?" Xe purred to the bird as xe scratched under her beak.
"Sleep good last night? Good. I brought you you're breakfast. Remember not to eat it too fast or you'll get another tummy ache, okay?" Eleanor croaked in response, as if saying,
I know, I know already... Geez... Charlie filled up Eleanor's various food dishes with different things for her to choose from and kissed the top of her head before leaving.
"Time to go yell at Lenny," Xe told her pet on her way out.
Charlie chuckled internally when xe entered Lenny's workplace, Flour Power. Just as xe had walked in, Lenny had come out of the back carrying a tray of freshly decorated cupcakes.
"My, my, dear, you are looking dashing today. Any special occasion?" He greeted, a dumb smile on his face.
"Cut the crap, Lenny, what happened with Georgia?" Xe snipped, annoyed.
"Also, do you not realize we're already four days behind schedule and we were already halfway through filming? Now we have to start all over, and that's even saying you can find someone that you deem a good enough actress to star in your film. We only have another week to get this done for class, Lenny."He sighed before saying,
"We'll figure it out, okay? I know some people we can ask in class later, and I posted several ads online. We'll have a new lead by tomorrow at the latest, I promise.""You also promised me no late assignments our senior year. This is our first big project and it's already going south. Face it, Len, you might have to settle for being less than the best for this one." Xe remarked, with an exhausted breath. Using his director name flipped a little switch in xyr zucchini's head, and he gave a knowing, curt nod that xe knew meant business. Xe reached over the counter to rub Lenny's arm supportingly. Xe knew how much he hated making films that he didn't feel were his best work. He constantly strove for improvement and pushed Charlie to do better, which xe loved about him, but sometimes his perfectionism made things much more difficult for them. As Lenny's boss came up front to stock up some more pastries, Charlie wiggled xyr eyebrows at Lenny before turning to the man and saying,
"Hey, Ging, how's it going here at the shop today? You guys make my favourite apple fritters yet today?"
