Lydia took his hand, getting up with a small grunt. She caught the boy looking at her ears and sighed. "I'm deaf, but I can hear with these," she mumbled, gesturing gingerly to the hearing aids. This was the part where most people started talking extra loud and enunciating their words to the point where it was offensive. She hoped that this guy would be different, but chances were, he'd be just like everyone else; an insensitive jerk who felt bad for the deaf girl.

Connor saw that the girl looked embarrassed, and he immediately felt guilty. Had he said something wrong? Then he saw her smile, which made him smile too. "You are," he said, looking at her shyly. "pretty, I mean," he looked down at his feet, and realized that he and Kristy were wearing the same shoes. The idea made him smirk, and he glanced at her.
