Cassandra looked at the piece of mail that had been between the Walgreens ad and the cable bill. Federal Bureau of Investigation, read the return address. It was addressed to her dad.
That didn't look good.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she slipped the envelope back into the stack of mail and set it all on the light, beige sandstone colored kitchen counter. Her dad was out of town on a business trip in Houston and, if she recalled correctly, he would be flying straight from there to London next week without coming home. Inhaling a deep slow breath and letting it out, Casi walked over to the stairs where she'd dropped her bookbag and heaved the strap onto her shoulder. The Coach bag had been a Christmas present but Stacey had somehow gotten a touch of lip gloss on it and it was being stubborn to clean off. Figured; Stacey was obsessed with lip products lately and she was always trying out a new one. The girl had already ruined two purses and one backpack this year due to faulty caps and user error in putting them back on.
Locking the door behind her, Casi jogged down the sidewalk to her Jeep and unlocked it before hopping into the driver's seat. She always tried to eat something from breakfast but it was never more than a couple bites. Today she'd lost track of time because she'd actually finished her frozen waffles and now she was running a few minutes late to school.
Heart racing as she dared to gun it through a yellow light, Casi barely made it to school in time but still slowed down to walk through the hallways to her first class. She flashed a smile at Betsy and a quick wave, boldly shouting down the hallway "I'll see you at lunch!!"
The bell rang overhead as she walked into the classroom and sat down in her usual seat. The teacher for this class was a stickler for attendance but laid back about seating; they'd been allowed to pick their own seats and then he'd simply recorded it. The class was a total bore though; government. The guy was nice enough and she could tell he tried but there was just nothing he could do to get Casi interested; it just wasn't her thing. Not one bit.
As the class got settled and he called for them to pass up their homework, Casi's heart sank. It had completely slipped her mind. She'd been wanting to do better in her classes but it was hard; how was she supposed to develop a new habit, one that required so much remembering and self control? Stifling a sigh of frustration, Casi passed forward the papers from the three students behind her, shifting her gaze to Mr Branson and hoping for a video today.
[I figured I'd start with a fresh school day and we could just skip to later parts of the day as needed. So if the next person's post is lunch or after school or something, I can just breeze Casi through it to be on the same page. If my post is bland or doesn't make sense I apologise; I'm watching a movie.]
