xxxxx"I was just curious," she said defensively, pulling her leg from the water and bringing her knees to her chest. "Besides, it's my future that's the stressful one. I know, I know," she replied. "I was just hoping you had, you know, an actual..." she trailed off, realizing how rude she sounded. "I'm sorry, that wasn't what I meant," she knitted her eyebrows together and pivoted to face him fully. "As long as you're doing what you love, I'm sure you'll scrape by somehow," she said, not quite believing her own words. She reached out to place a small hand on his shoulder. "It can't be easy," she murmured, watching the water lap at the dock. The thing about Emma that kept her from being labeled as a snob, was that underneath it all was pure, unmarred kindness. She really did want the best for everyone around her, and did her best not ever to judge people. Sure, her and Theo were really only friends because of their group, but she wouldn't have hung out with them if she didn't like him at least a little bit. She didn't know what it was like, not to have a rich family, not to have everything handed to you on a silver platter. But then again, she could imagine it, and it wasn't pleasurable. Wanting to change the subject, she drew her hand back to fiddle with her toes, still in the upright fetal position she tended to take. "So, you must be excited to surf, this trip," she said brightly.
