- Pots clanked and clattered as Annabeth scrubbed at the dishes in the rugged sink. Her mom and brothers were out working in the fields again today, picking wheat and cotton for the Capitol under the scorching sun again, leaving her home alone t tend to their worn-down, one-room home. Tepid light beamed in through the cracked window, and Annabeth rubbed her forehead with the back of her hand, sighing. They should be home any minute....
Setting a pot aside to dry, she glanced at the wooden door that led outside. Normally, they'd be home earlier, but because of the coming Games they were most likely being forced to work longer. She bit into her lip as she continued scrubbing again. After this, she'd probably try to wash out some of the clothing they had - which was very few. Another plate was set aside with a clank, and as if just on cue the door closed behind her. "We're home!" A voice echoed around the house, arms wrapped around her waist, and she was picked up, causing water to splatter everywhere. "Hey, be careful, Xander!" Her brother immediately set her down, smirking. "Stop bothering your sister, Xander. I thought you were twenty, not three." Annabeth smiled and turned at the sound of her mom's voice, giving her a warm hug. "How are the dishes coming along?" her mom added.
"There's not as much water as I thought, but we'll manage," she replied simply, studying her mom. She was much more tired and out of it than normal - probably from the extra work. Although, she was never exactly the same after their dad passed away.
