[ Yay, thanks guys! Ok, we can start, but please remember to make some guys! I'm just trying to decide on a name. I'll have more time tomorrow :] ]
For nearly a year now, signs of life on the surface have been dwelling on the minds of many citizens concerned for the preservation of their culture and way of life. If the surface was habitable, what would that mean? Would they have to leave their lives behind and go back? What kind of wars and political debates would this cause to flare? And most of all, what exactly had changed while they weren't looking? New life forms? New plants? Intelligent life? Civilization? Well, that is why each of the three regions sent a few worthy young people to explore the surface and report their findings back home. They were dropped off in a remote desert-like area with virtually no vegetation or water. They each have necessities with them, to help them survive, and things to gather evidence with. This is where their revolutionary expedition begins.

It was earlier than she even wanted to know. Her blonde hair fell into long waves, curling at the ends. Her drowsy blue eyes shined with excitement as she woke up slowly. She had shared heartfelt goodbyes with her parents the night before, and briefly before she left. Then, she had left home, maybe for good, and was seen off by the whole city with other select few that were chosen to ride to the surface. They were in a small submarine pod, now making it's way towards the light. They passed many creatures on the way up, and Arvie could not tear her gaze from the window. Loss had not fully hit her yet, but no doubt it would soon. She was silent the whole time, her mind wandering on the long trip. Once they bobbed to the surface, the autopilot beached them and anchored the submarine near shore. The hatch opened with a hissing sound and after the others, she climbed her way up the ladder and out of the condensed prison. She had not realized how cramped it had been until she was out in the open. Now, she followed the others on a long trek to the place they would meet the others. She was excited. She had never met or even talked to anyone from the other regions before. She wondered how different they would be. After all, they did come from very different cultures. Once they reached the spot, she felt the group slow and come to a stop. Now, they would wait for the others to reach them.

An alarm went off and woke up one boy very early in the morning. He wanted to crush it and sleep longer until he remembered what today was. The day he got to go on the expedition. The day he would be sent to the surface. He had prepared everything the day before. His supplies and his goodbyes were taken care of. He left out his clothes the day before and slipped them on now. He was ready to leave in around ten minutes, but still, he wanted to do one last thing. He didn't know when he would be back, if he ever would, and with that in mind, he couldn't leave without one last goodbye to his little sister Gretchen. He peeked silently into her room and approached her bedside. He gazed down at her sleeping form and leaned down to kiss her forehead. She had been the person he had ever cared for most and he wanted her to have fond memories of him as he would of her. Maybe the next time he saw her, she would be grown, with a family of her own even, or maybe he would never see her again. He thought of this and looked at her until it was too much to bear. He turned sharply and left the room without a sound.
He left his home to meet the others for the voyage. Many of the people going he knew, from school or otherwise. They boarded the train to the surface. The tracks were ancient, but the train was new. They had to reinforce the tracks and actually make a vehicle for the trip, considering no one had been to the surface in thousands of years. On the train he socialized only a little bit, but then again, no one seemed to be in a very talkative mood. That was understandable. They were on the train for what seemed like days, and for all he knew, it could have been, before they saw sunlight through the windows for the first time in their lives. The train slowed to a stop as it reached the end of the line and as they departed, Ez wondered how long it would stay there. He looked at it over his shoulder as they walked away- his last connection to home. Now those who came with him were all he had. After a long while, he swear he saw silhouettes of others in the distance and he grew suddenly curious to learn about the other two cultures besides his own that were left of the human race.
