hazel park, michigan.
I guess I could call it home. My family and I moved here when I was nine, not a month after the doctors diagnosed me. It wasn't exactly the most pleasant time of my life, but things have gotten better. I'd been having problems breathing, symptoms quite a bit beyond your common cold. I got worse until it felt like I just couldn't get the air in, no matter how hard I tried. Lung cancer, they said. I was likely to live after a surgery or two. First time in, they cut into my lungs to find that the tumors had spread since the screening. I've been living terminal ever since.

I still don't know why we picked this place, considering all the other choices we had, but Mom insists that it was because of the "friendly care service" that was offered. She meant the support groups. I wasn't really on board with the idea, but I went anyway. Its not that bad, I guess. I've met some cool people while there. Apparently a lot of people come to Hazel Park with the exact same thing in mind.

Its not just cancer patients, either. I met a girl with a bulging disk at the base of her spine and neuropathy in her leg. We're becoming tight friends.

I met another girl with depression. I told her that I'd see her next time.

A couple of weeks ago, someone asked me what it was like to be dying. I told him that I was fine with it. He smiled; as it turned out, he only had eight months left to live. The next day, I saw him in the lobby of the church where support group was held. I gave him a bouquet of flowers and a handmade card. On the inside, I'd signed, "Happy last eight months." He laughed and I smiled - I was glad to make him happy somehow. I was surprised that my sick sense of humor made him laugh, but still.

I often wonder if Hazel Park has always been this way, or if its some recent thing. Maybe its just coincidence that so many teens gather here, maybe its not, I don't know. I guess we're all just looking for the miracle that will pull us up. I know I won't even be given the chance, but when someone else is, I'll cheer.

extra.
ooc; So, was it a good idea to make the introduction like a post? I spent about a day on it and I couldn't really think of another way to start it, so I went with the roleplay format. |D

The Usual Words is set in a southern town in Michigan called Hazel Park. Its become somewhat of a "refuge" for teenagers with physical or mental illnesses, like cancer or depression. Families move here with their children mostly due to the exquisite support groups held in one of the churches, but also because the doctors and care offered. Its seen as "one of the most successful, kind, and friendly environments for suffering teenagers" with a lot of trust to back it up.

I'd like to say that all of the characters will probably have different goals? Maybe not everyone will attend support group, maybe not everyone wants to find a way to live on. I'm a little worried about the lack of central plot, but I think its safe to say that the story's gonna be carried along by character interaction and personal goals. There will probably be many points in which something big happens that affects everyone, though (say, a new drug that was released for patients) that will bring everyone in. Heck, maybe its something as simple as a snowstorm that affects everyone.

If you have any questions, please don't be afraid to ask me! My name's Megan, and welcome to the roleplay. c:

The First Catholic Church is where the majority of support groups are held. Despite its holy location, the support groups do their best to keep religion out of the equation, seeing as many people come from different beliefs and views. Support groups are held upstairs on the second level, in one of the rooms sometimes used for Sunday school.

The Hospital is quite as it says, the hospital. There's no special name for it, really. granted, some of the more pessimistic kids call it the death center, but all nicknames aside, its the obvious place to find emergency care.

Hazel Commons is Hazel Park's shopping center. Its really a huge complex of stores, restaurants, tourist traps and a royal movie theatre all moved into a good count of acres. Its easy to find hit stores like Forever 21, Hot Topic and Aeropostale, but its also a good place to go looking for a meal or a sweet movie to watch.

Eastside Medical Center is the "doctor's office" as a lot of people refer to it as. Unlike the hospital, Eastside Medical Center is appointments only. Its where someone would go for a scheduled screening or even just an innocent vaccine shot.

The Residentials, also called the apartments, is the residential part of Hazel Park. Homes range from apartment complexes, owned homes or even rented places, it all depends on the situation.

I. The site rules apply at all times. This includes language and explicit content. Make sure you censor any curse words and try not to overuse them.

II. No god-modding, power playing, mary-sues or gary-sues. Please.

III. This is a semi-literate roleplay. At least five "lines" per character, please. I'm setting the bar really low because I know everyone gets writers block every now and then, but don't make it a common excuse.

IV. No fighting in ooc. I've been there. Its not fun. Don't do it.

V. Only make as many characters as you can handle. You don't have to make a girl for every guy, you can have as many characters as you want, but make sure you can handle them all. Also, if someone notices that the gender population is seriously uneven, let me know?

VI. Characters are meant to be ill. Either physically or mentally, characters are suffering. Remember that when you're creating them and roleplaying!

VII. I (paperstars) am the leader of this roleplay. I reserve the rights to change anything and everything pertaining to the thread, the roleplay, or the members of it. (i.e.: I can kick you out if you're misbehaving. ono)

VIII. Come back often! I hate to see someone join, post once or twice, and then never be heard from again. If you're going to be gone, let us know so we don't get feelings. If you plan on leaving, also let us know. :c

IX. I get it. Romance is probably going to play a big part. Just be responsible and realistic.

X. I will not be supplying you with a form. You're free to use mine, but I won't be setting it out for you to copy and fill in. its your choice as to whether you want to use my form or your own.

XI. Have fun! It is a rule. ouo

♔ setting. Its early spring in Hazel Park, a time of cleansing, some might say. The air is still crisp with cold, snow falling maybe more often than some would like. School is in its fourth term, closure within sight. Only five months to go and we're home free... Maybe.

Why try to fit in, when you were born to stand out?
nAmE:. Raimondo Mylon VanAtta~
gEnDeR:. "Male.."
aGe:. Seventeen years of age..
I am a new comer, if that is alright..
cUrReNt EmOtIoNs:. I've held some fairly interesting conversations with Ali. She always keeps me company when no one is there for me..

tHe NoRmAl hUmAn InForMaTioN~
Raimondo Mylon VanAtta. A seventeen year old boy, five foot seven, approximately one hundred and five pounds. Rei has a Rottweiler, named Zeus, and a black mare named Destiny. Destiny isn't much of a pet, but a therapist for him. Teaching him trust and connection with living things. The average teenage boy. Or what it seems. Rai has been created to fit this new and incoming world. He was born special. Rai was born with a mental illness. Schizophrenia. Once Rai gets his thoughts on something, he snaps into a mental break down, he sees things that aren't really there, and talks to people who don't exist, for instance, his best friend, Ali. Ali is a tall blonde girl that Rai swears up and down he grew up with all his life. Like a sister. A sister he never had. When Rai felt alone, in doubt, or goes through any mental breakdowns, Ali is there for
Image
him. He says she is the only one who understands him. Who can take a step into his shoes and see through his blue eyes, and know what troubles surround him in a daily routine. Ali is another part of him. When he needs her, she is there, and when he is alone, she is there. Wherever he is, Ali will follow. Perhaps not bother him when he needs to be alone, but to be his shoulder to cry on. Ali means everything to Rai, and if he sees her in touble, he will fight to the death, although on other people's eyes, they see nothing but a boy, perhaps mentally ill, fighting nothing but the air infront of him. Rai is different. No, not different. Rai is special.
Have you ever put yourself in someone elses shoes. Someone who views this world as a nightmare, but a nightmare that turns into reality...

wHaT mAkEs Rai eVeN mOrE sPeCiAl...

Rai isn't only diagnosed with schizophrenia, but he was created even more different. Although he seemes to be the one cooped up alone in a bedroom, perhaps reading a book or two, he can run. And run he will. Rai never found himself getting into much trouble, for if he ever sensed any around, he would disappear, run off into the night, leave no trace of his presence. Rai was afriad of hurting other's feelings, for he knew that he wasn't able to feel much often, and felt that it was nessisary keeping other's feelings well preserved. As if they were a daintly, petite flower, holding onto it's life as it slowly died as it was forced from the ground, disconnecting the little thing from it's root. From it's heart. He felt that he wasn't to be apart of anything, or anyone else's business, considering people never thought to have included him in conversations. Considering he never included himself in others lives, for it is something that he never even considered once.
Image
wHaT iS tHiS lOvE yOu SpEaK oF~

Rai was never the one to fall in love. Actually, he is quite confused upon the word love. Does it mean that you will last forever with that person that may mean the complete world to you, to grasp their hand and cry when they let go. The one you would absolutely die for, or is it another world for lie. One can only mess everything up by little words and little actions, for love is a huge risk to take, for it can forever mess your mind, and Rai has enough to deal with already. He would rather sit back and spend his endless days and nights with Ali, talking about the latest clothes, converse, and music out to date than spend an evening in a cafe sipping on the newest latte` with another human being, unless it was with Ali, that is. And no, Rai is not in love with Ali, nor will he ever be. Ali is another part of him, someone who he can tell everything to, never be judged, made fun of, or be questioned by, that is if he doesn't want to be. Sure, Rai can makes friends, and get along fine, but when he needs to be alone, to gets things set strait, to pick up the pieces of his broken puzzle, then he will leave without a word. Want his heart? Good luck. Rei can be a very down to earth guy, but it
Image
will take a light year to have him spit his true self up. Getting to know him will be a challenge, although if you have the patience and time, it's defiantly worth it.

tHe hIsTorY wOrtH sHaRiNg--

Have you ever wondered what the life of a schizophrenic would be like? Take your thoughts and multiply it by two. Many people believe it is only hallucinations, delusions, or thought disorders. Some cases, it is only that. But to a bad note, Rei has it worse. His self esteem is at an all time low, he lacks emotional expression at times, his motivation isn't any better than a snail's; Rei lacks pleasure in everyday life, and lacks feeling at times. With these negative effect of his disorder, his childhood was bland. Rei wasn't the kid that tosses a baseball with his dad, goes to birthday parties,
Image
or the one that is always active outside. Not on a bike, roller-skates, skateboard, or on a walk. If you were to be looking for Rei, you would most likely find him relaxing on his bed, talking to Ali, drawing whatever his mind told him, or designing clothes. His three favorite things in the whole world. His life hasn't changed much from now. He has a mom, he has a dad. They treat him like gold. They try to understand his difficulties, and troubles, but they aren't anywhere near close to him compared to Ali, for Ali is apart of him. The sister he always dreamed of. His best friend.

oThEr...
Rai isn't used to large open crowds, nor does he take much liking to them. If Rai were to posses any liking, depending on how his actions are taking place, what thoughts are being thrown about his troubled head, as well as the dislikes, in which many people share, he has pocketfuls. Rai isn't the type to take a liking to average things many people want, desire, seek, or posses. Rai isn't the kind to love large groups of people, parties, or loud surrounding noises. You may be thinking, why he is here? This is no place for him, perhaps he belongs somewhere else. You may be right, but keep this in mind. Rai shouldn't be classified as different. Sure, he has an illness, in which he has no control over, sure he may have social issues. But that builds his personal character. His personality. It adds twists and turns to everyday life. He is unique, he is unique in the blandest of ways.

Rai, the quite one. The one who is always glancing at his feet, perhaps mimicking to thin air, but in his eyes, it's the people around who in which are not visible to others. Rai. The one who peculiarly enjoys the youth of the dandelions. The first stage, and how they seem to scatter, dancing with the wind at an even, calm breeze. The one who enjoys strawberry snow cones in the wintertime, and a mocha latte' in the summer. The one who prefers a grey wall then a green. A black shirt than a red. White skinny jeans than blue jeans. The one they call unique. Rai finds himself veering away from big crowds, cowering in an abandoned ally, house, or somewhere to keep himself actually to himself. He finds it hard to be himself with the voices surrounding him that no one else claims to hear, calling him "crazy," "off his rocker," or flat out "insane." Scarring the wits out of children, sending them home with nightmares of thoughts. The one some look at, and perhaps look in the other direction, claiming they have not seen him, and don't know his whereabouts. He is Raimondo.

He truly is-- one of a kind...

hðþêlꧧ...

I was always told I was different. That I was "special," but Ali, please tell me,
for I don't understand.
What is the definition of normal?
