My mind was brought back into my head with a thud. Or, more like, with a different sound. It didn't fit in with what I was playing. It broke up the chords I had been playing, so I lay my fingers flat across the strings to mute them. I was still on the edge of the stage, so I could see where a lot of things were, but I couldn't see where the sound was coming from.

I started down the hallway to the classroom where the drums were stored. There were a few different sets, and every kid in the class was able to have their own in the school. The school payed for them, so it wasn't like it cost anything to use them. And you could bring your own if you really wanted. If you didn't care if someone decided to use it as a canvass. I kept mine at home.

For a moment or two, I stood still, staring down at the floor and leaning against the door I had just walked through. I wondered if anyone else was here yet. I had always hated being the first person to go anywhere, and being the first person in school seemed worse than being the first guy in class. I looked up, sucked in a breath, then started walking away from the door. It wasn't the front door, so I couldn't see if there were actually any other people around.
