"Go!" The knight declared and sped off at top speed.

Kaytan slapped the reins against Ellethwen's neck and she flew forward, all her hair streaming back into Kaytan's face as he leaned forward and stayed low. She streaked past Scavander, her tail tickling the nose of the knight's mount. Kaytan smiled and urged her on, clamping his helmet down quickly with one hand.

Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

Kaytan pressed his heels into Ellethwen's sides, encouraging her to dig deep and release all her reserves of speed. The mare responded instantly, increasing her pace to her top speed and pulling farther ahead.

Scavander pressed on until his horse stumbled, causing him to fall over the front "No!" he yelped flipping onto the ground, horse tumbling after.

Kaytan heard the commotion behind him and looked back, pulling Ellethwen into a sharp turn and trotting back to him as soon as he could. "Master!" he cried, jumping off his horse and struggling to lift him back to his feet. "Art thou injured?"

Scavander took off his helmet and brushed himself off "Yes," he nodded then flicked his clouded gaze to his horse "Ereath!" he yelped and ran over

Kaytan stepped over to the downed horse as well, a concerned expression clouding his face underneath his helmet, which he quickly removed. He knelt beside the horse and cradled its head in his arms. The animal gave him a mournful look and snorted, struggling to get up.

Scavander walked over to the horse's belly and grabbed his weapon off its saddle. There was no use for an injured horse now. He drove the sharp spear into its stomach.
