The 5th Quarter Quell

I watch as the little girl bolts past me. She's probably all torn up because she's only 12. Rena reminds me of my little sisters... I now know that I'm gonna watch her back throughout the games. She deserves to live long enough to actually live her life. I sit next to the other kid, who was talking to her. "So, what district are you from," I ask with a little bit of caution showing through my voice.

"District 2, the same as Leah over there," Austin smiled and pointed towards the girl huddled up on the seat.

Rena looked at her blanket. It was soft animal fur on the bottom side and velvet on the top.

[- ιηfιηιту.]

Leah's head shot up, looking dead ahead at Austin. She narrowed her eyes. He looked a bit familiar. But it didn't bother or make Leah any more curious to learn about him. She squinted, then slid off the seat slowly. "And how do you know my name?" She asked coldly, folding her arms. "I don't remember introducing myself," she said, raising her eyebrows.

"I've seen you around. And like me and my friends, we know almost everybody in the district," Austin said coolly. He and his friends have trained their whole lives for the games, making him a Career.

I glance at Austin, a little bit nervous to talk. I had also trained my whole life for the games, but that's for me to know and others, except my alliances, to never find out until my score comes out. Our home in district 8 is near the Victor's homes. When I was little, I didn't have anything to do but visit the victors. The told me stories, and with those stories came lessons. And I never stopped visiting the victors. So I never stopped learning. I plan to keep quiet, but I honestly want an alliance with Rena, and maybe Austin. I'm not gonna just bring it up though... I'll just say yes if they ask me. "I know almost everybody from my district, too," I say, not knowing what else to say.

"Cool," Austin said, looking in the direction Rena went.

[- ιηfιηιту.]

The girl shrugged. Leah snorted. "Haven't we all?" She retorted to Austin, rolling her eyes. "All the top districts do. It's just how it is," she said, as if it were so simple. But it was. The top districts always win. They never fail to. It's just how it is. It doesn't matter how big and strong their opponent is. They haven't trained since they were little, so why bother even trying to win? They're so pathetic.
Leah turned to Rena, squinting her eyes. "That's terrific," she said lamely.

Austin looked confused. "What is?" Seeing no point in staying with the two girls, he left them and walked int othe hallway that Rena fled to.

[hotaru.]

Lily wondered who she should be allies with. She was better comfortable with girls, but boys were strong. In fact, she would be better protected with a bigger group. But she would have to kill them at the end. Light flowed onto her blue dress. The breeze blew as she sighed deeply, looking down.

I look over at Leah. "I'm from district 8. We make textiles. Only the mentors know how to use anything but a needle, or a sewing machine. The mentors and whoever they talk to." I glance at Leah, with hopeful eyes. She'd probably want to be a part of the Careers, not with a girl from the textile district. Unless if she knew my secret, and nobody's going to find out until the Games start, even if I have an alliance ate stake. Also, she might not want to team up with Rena, and the other younger kids. And I want to do that, to save them.
