Scene 1:

Katniss by a lonely river thinking about the games

Katniss: *throws a stone into the river* I'm so tired. I got no sleep last night..

Katniss: Poor Prim. I hope she knows that she won't be picked for the games.. It's only her first year.. There's no way.
But she doesn't.. *throws another stone*

Katniss: It's also so lonely out here.. If only Gale was here.. I could vent my feelings out to him.. He would understand. I mean.. He does. He understands like no one else. Even better than prim sometimes, or my mother.

[bonjour.]

.: Peeta Mellark :.
With a slight grunt, Peeta heaved a bag of flour over his shoulder, carrying it into the dimly lit bakery his family owned. He dropped it down in the kitchen area, slapping his sweaty palms down on his pants, before looking up his mother. The woman instructed him to go get ready for the reaping, which he did, heading into the small house his family lived in to wash up.

Katniss Everdeen:

With a shifting of her feet she managed to walk at a slow pace behind Prim. Looking out over the horizon she took Prim in her arms and Prim started weaping. "Prim dear.. Prim. Your name is only in there once.. They're not going to pick you". Prim looked up and nodded looking over at Peeta's bakery where he stood looking up at the sky. "But what if they do.."

[bonjour.]

.: Peeta Mellark :.
Peeta moved slowly behind the other boys of his age, his hands at his side and head aimed towards the ground. He didn't bother looking around, instead taking his place and standing still, blue eyes aimed up at the stage, where the glass bowls rested, one of which held his names.

Katniss Everdeen

Katniss glanced up at the glass bowl that held her fate. After all her name was in there 25 times. She crept over to talk to Madge (the daughter of the mayor) who seemed to be Katniss's only friend besides Gale. "Hey". Madge jumped startled. "Sorry. I was thinking". she whispered. Suddenly there was a scream on the other side of the crowd. Katniss soon found Prim crying her eyes out in the hands of one of the peacekeepers. Katniss held Prim and reminded her that her name was only in there once and there was nothing to worry about. Prim nodded and looked over towards the stage where Effie Trinket stood holding a single slip of paper and read "Primrose Everdeen".

[bonjour.]

.: P e e t a M e l l a r k :.
Everdeen.....Everdeen. Where have I heard that before?[/b] Peeta asked himself, still staring straight ahead, at a point, just to the left of Effie. [i]Katniss. That name popped into his head, and he remembered now where that last name had come from. Years ago. Rain. Burnt bread. Pigs. His mother's hand hitting him. Stepping outside to see someone rummaging in their garbage bins. Risking being beat and tossing the loaf of burnt bread to the girl. Primrose must be her sister.

~Katniss Everdeen~

I couldn't help myself. I lunged forward and shouted "I volunteer!!". I gasped putting my hand over my mouth. The silence throughout the crowd soon was disturbed when Prim started screaming "No! No! Don't take her! No!". I looked over at Gale and he nodded. He knew what to do. He picked up Prim and took her to where my mother was standing watching. I only caught a glimpse of her face but the glimpse that I caught was a tear rolling down her face. I knew exactly what she was thinking. "How could this happen to my family..".
I felt a hand on my shoulder as the peacekeepers guided me towards the stage. Effie soon picked up another glass bowl from another podium next to her. She grinned. "Boys next".

My face was growing very red. Great. Who is it whom I am going to have to kill from my district and live with the grief of their family forever? Effie picked up a slip of paper from out of the bowl. "Peeta Mellark". It felt as though time had stopped, as though I was the only one in the square, but I knew that would soon change. I would soon be surrounded by people I was expected to kill, even if I won the games (which I won't) my life will never be the same. I just have to begin to prepare for that.
