Elizabeth loped the paint stallion over the hard packed dirt. She squinted slightly and saw the rise of a city about two miles away. She smiled and leaned lower on the stallion's neck,"Come on boy." She felt Apache lengthen his stride and speed up. Elizabeth watched as the city began to come closer and closer. She slowed him about a 1/2 mile away, down to a easy walk. She pulled out her gun and slid it into it's holster, and then her nife in it's sheaf on her other side. The woman pulled her hat down over her eyes and walked on into town. She saw people everywhere, it was a small town though, so not too many. She dismounted and quickly check the stallion's hooves for rocks, and then led him into town, watching out for anyone threatening.

Emerald nodded and started looking outside the stall for some brushes. "Nice to meet you, Jack. And it's okay, I know it's not your fault he got bit. You were just helping me out." Finding one, she quickly handed it to Jack, finally looking up at him.

"Yup," replied Jack, taking the brush from the woman without looking at her. It's not that he was being callous; he just had other things to worry about right now. Namely, his mare. He had been riding hard all day and she was mighty tired. "Well," said the man, running the brush over his horse's coat, "I suspect you've got things to take care of." He looked up at her, still working with the brush, and added, "Not to be rude, but you can fetch a pretty high price for good horse meat around here." He shrugged, then looked back at his mare, stroking her nose as he worked a tough patch of sweaty dirt from her shoulder.

Elizabeth looked around and saw a stable a little down the street. She smiled and walked towards it. As Aoache rubbed his head against her back, the young womman rubbed his head. She opened the door and looked inside, seeing the two on down the aisle. She tipped her hat to them and then wen down the other side of stalls, choosing a good sized and unnoticed one. Opening the door, Elizabeth let the horse inside and followed him in. She started to untack him and rubbed the sides of his lips where the bit was, feeling him relax. She finished untackiong the stallion and pulled out a rag from her saddlebags, and her canteen. She wet the cloth square and started to rub the sweat marks.

Emerald nodded, watching as he brushed off his mare. She would be doing the same with Diablo right about now if he hadn't gotten bit by that snake. Another pang of grief shot through her but she didn't let it show on her face. She was a little surprised when he suggested she sell Diablo to the butcher. She wanted to vomit at the thought of people eating her horse, but what else was she going to do with him? "Oh, um, thanks for lettin' me know. I should get going then. Maybe I'll see you around, Mr. Aubrey." And with a nod of her head she walked back out of the stable. She bit her lip and knelt next to Diablo, taking off the tack and saddle bags with shaking hands. Carrying the heavy tack in her arms, she walked through town until she found the butcher. Luckily for her, the butcher's wife was working the store today, and she was very kind and sympathetic to Emerald. With another "I'm sorry for your loss." The butcher's wife handed her a pouch of money and then followed her out to Diablo with her sons, who then brought Diablo back to the butcher shop. Holding back tears, she walked back to the hotel, hoping that they had a room left.

A tall man on a black horse rode into town as the sun was going down. He was shaved clean, not something you normally see on a man this far out in the desert, and his clothes were nearly impeccable. But for a thin coating of dust, he looked as though he belonged in New York or San Francisco, not this tiny bushwhack town. He dismounted in front of a hotel and tipped his hat politely to a young woman who passed him. When it became apparent that she was heading to the same place, he hurried to hold the door for her. "Good evening," he said, voice silky in a manner that was starkly different from that of most men around here. It was obvious that he didn't smoke or even chew tobacco. "Little miss, would you mind asking if a man by the name of Aubrey has come by here?"

Emerald looked up as a horse and rider rode past, giving a small smile to the man when he tipped his hat to her. She smiled again when he held the door open for her. "Thanks." she said, walking in and then turning to face him. It would of been hard for her to open the door with all that tack in her arms. When he asked that little favor of her, a red flag went up in her mind. He seemed like a nice fellow, but why did he want her to ask for Jack? Couldn't he just ask himself? It's not like he wasn't allowed in the hotel or anything. Unless of course he was an outlaw. Then she really got suspicious. Could this man be an outlaw? Looking up at him from under her long lashes, she smiled again, a sugary sweet and slightly flirty smile. "Depends on who wants to know." she said, hoping that maybe her flirting would get some information out of the man.

The man stepped into the hotel lobby behind the girl and let the door close, watching as she glanced up at him through her eyelashes. Typical. Honestly? It made him want to vomit all over the hideously warped wood floor. But he had to run with it. He and Jackie boy needed to have a couple of words. So he sauntered closer to the girl and leaned against the wall next to her, one elbow casually at his side, the other hand tipping his hat forward to throw his face into shadow. "My little brother's been wandering a mite too long, little miss," he said, tossing in a small, awkward laugh just for authenticity. "Our father- well, my father, after their last fight- wants him home again." He looked left, then right, even though the only other person in the lobby was the clerk behind the desk. Then he leaned in a bit and told the woman, "Honestly, I think our mother had something to do with it. She always did wear the pants in the family."

Emerald listened, smiling the entire time and giving a small giggle when he said the bit about "their" mother. She still didn't trust this man fully. "Well, in that case, I guess I could ask." she said. "Just wait here." And with that she walked over to the front desk, checking herself in and handing the clerk some money that the butcher had gave her. She then stuck up a small conversation with the clerk, talking in hushed tones so that the man wouldn't hear. "Okay, well thanks." she said to the clerk before walking back over to the man. "She said he's in the room right next to mine. I can take you up there if you want."

Elizabeth finished with Apache, and pulled out the small bag of oats she had,"I'll have to buy more boy," she said feeding it to him. She went outside and got a bucket full of water and came back to the stall, setting it on the ground. She sat down next to him, watching as the stallion lowered his long, lean neck down and drank thirstly. The woman smiled and closed her eyes, fingering the hilt of her knife as she thought about what had brought her to leave her ranch..
It was early in the morning when she heard the horses screaming in their stalls. Elizabeth ran out and saw the barn on fire, flames reaching towards the house. She tried her best to free the horses, and got all but two out alive. The woman had no option of putting it out, so she watched all of her horses go free, and heard the screams of those who didn't make it. She mounted her own persinel horse, Apache of course, and rode out, not looking back as she left to find a new life, knowing she couldn't safe her ranch.
