you have to check the boxes by the message and pick delete marked messages from the drop down in the bottom right corner.

I just deleted a page of my messages with no problem at all. Are you returning to the page, hitting the Backspace button, or going somewhere else and then going back to your messages? If you're just hitting Backspace to go back, they won't be gone.
