I want to start a thread where people can trade me for a pet, and suggest a name for it. And whenever someone suggests a really nice and unique name, i'll give them a prize (most likely a free item or pet). I would think this would go in the Giveaway/adoptions section, but since you have to suggest a name for a pet first and there's only a chance, I don't know. Is this even allowed?

This would be fine in the Free Adoptions board. As long as entries do not require significant effort, its considered a giveaway rather than a contest/competition. You can read the free adoption board rules here for more details on what is allowed for giveaways.
