How to find a specific pet?

I am finally sorting out my unsorted pets and making sure each month/event group has the proper pets sorted into it.
However, there is one pet that I just cant find. In the archive, it says i own the pet, but its not in the proper group or in any of my trade groups that I can find. I looked in my trades from around that time as well and just cant find it. What is the best way to find a wayward pet?

You just have to search through all your groups manually. Some users will ask others to find the pet, and offer a prize in return (something small usually, like an uncommon from this year).
