Need Some Help Here!

So I just noticed someone posted a question similar to this, but the reply didn't really help with what I was wondering about. Can anyone tell me how you 'sell' your art for C$ or pets? And by that I mean, what do you do after someone pays you? Are you supposed to 'give' that artwork to that person somehow or allow them to claim it as their own?
How does this work?

How “selling” art works is someone gives you a character of theirs to draw and you draw it. They are the only person who can use it, but they dont really own it. They own The character and the right to use the art, but you still drew it so they would have to credit you!
