What is an auto in an auction?

Is an auto something that you will automatically as soon as you get it as a bit accept? Or something that will just shorten the auction time?

I thought it was the first one but I’ve seen the second one a few times?

Traditionally it is the way you first described it. However, it is ultimately up to the auctioneer to decide how they run their auction. They don't necessarily have to accept an auto-bid right away (or at all even) if they change their mind!
