Art question.

Postby Pinkdragonwings » Fri Jun 14, 2019 11:42 am

Hi!

Can I post a topic, looking to commission fanart of characters from videogames or other media? (Using CS pets or C$ as payment.) I read the rules but I don't see one explicit stating you can't but I guess it could fall into "Copying/Tracing/Modifying/Claiming ownership of other peoples art/lineart" portion if video games fall into that.

Thanks for any help!

I believe this is okay as long as the person making the fanart specifically states that the art belongs to you (and you only) and you are able to do what you want with it. Also makes sure that they allow you to color the image as well so you can edit your own version since you own it. Hope this helps. Somebody might have better knowledge on this topic however, so i would wait a few days until you get another response. <3

Dear moderators, I have quit but please don’t delete my account. I’m not getting rid of all my pets because I’d like to come back one day. Those pets are very special and include the first pet I ever adopted back in 2014. Please and thank you.

You can commission fan art, but you can’t claim the character as your own.
You are requesting an artist draw you something specific, which is ok. It would be different if an artist started making and selling fanart (for profit) without any requests. As in, making a product for wholesale rather than a customized commission.

An artist you commission for original artwork does not need to give you access to their linework unless you have specifically asked them to ahead of time and they agreed. In fact, most artists specifically do not want you to trace or modify or recolor their work.
Generally commissions are expected to be original work (no pre made lines or bases) made specifically for the person who ordered it. You can then use the image as long as you give credit. Some artists don’t want their art used in certain places or want a specific mark of credit, so make sure you establish their policies before commissioning.

Thanks so much for the help!

Oops, maybe I'm confused on what a commission is. First time trying to get art. ;p

I just want fanart, not a character or lineart or anything. Wouldn't be colouring or claiming it as my own either.

I'll post a topic try and describe what I want as best I can. It might be better that way!

Thank you so much!

No worries! I'd be happy to clean anything up c:

Anyway, you should still be fine as long as you respect the artist's personal rules!
