Trading items

Hi! So I'm working on a trade with someone regarding items. I traded away some of the things they were asking for, and I'm trying to edit the trade to take them out so that we can work on something for the rest of the items involved, but because I don't have all the items they asked for, it won't let me edit the trade. Is there any way around this?

i’ve never experienced this sort of issue before. what does it say when you attempt to edit the trade? does a message pop up, or is the edit button grayed out, or is tapping on the edit button unresponsive, etc?

edit: i tried it out with one of my own trades, and i realize that a message pops up. in this situation, i would recommend that you cancel the trade with a polite message explaining to your trade partner why you did so, and then resend the trade to them.

When items that were part of one trade are traded away in another the trade doesn’t autocancel. The reason the trade isn’t autocancelled like with pets is because items do not have unique IDs. When you try to edit or accept the trade it checks to see if you have those items, and if you don’t you can’t proceed. The only way to remedy this other than canceling and starting a new trade is to have the missing items available on your account again.

I get that it doesn't autocancel. But why in the world can't we edit it and take out the missing stuff?

Because the process does not exist for it to automatically remove the items that are causing conflict in the trade. They aren't allowed in the trade because you don't have them, but they are showing as existing there, and the trade system in its current form reaches an error it cannot overcome. Your best bet is to "auto-cancel" it yourself as if that had happened on its own, as it would in a pet trade. There is just an extra manual step to account for the lack of unique ID numbers.
