How do they feel about their family?; Chester has never had a family; only a ragdoll whose name often escapes his memory. He's had it as long as he can remember; though one day it was run over by a pick-up truck when he dropped it in the road. As his memory problems get better, he thinks about it more and more. When he hears the word 'family'; he thinks of the rag-tag plush that hardly resembled the panda it was supposed to be. He feels a soft warmth, a bittersweet pain, like sucking a cherry-flavored cough drop. He doesn't quite know how to feel; he doesn't feel angry that his parent's could've left him, though he doesn't feel sad they could've just died. All he can feel when he hears that simple word is melancholy, a faint glee at the remembrance of the doll, and a cold sorrow at the loss.

Beau sighed as she looked into her full coffee, her stomach rolling like a thunderstorm. She wasn’t sick, but something didn’t feel right this morning. She sat the coffee down, turning back to her laptop. She was supposed to be studying for her AP Biology final, but instead she was scrolling through Facebook. Image after image of her old highschool friends sailed past as she scrolled, all of them showing bright smiles and shining eyes. Most of them had people with them in the pictures, too. One boy has gotten married, another was celebrating their birthday with dozens of friends, and one girl had even had a baby boy. They all looked so happy, and so content with their lives. None of them looked lonely. None of them had bags under their eyes. None of them had been neglecting taking care of themselves for weeks. Beau closed her burning eyes, tears threatening to fall again this morning. She couldn’t keep doing this. But she didn’t know how to stop, how to make it better. She had no one to reach out to. She was alone.

A frantic yell from outside disrupted her thoughts. Beau whipped her head around, watching as a mother screamed her child’s name, panic obvious in her features. Beau stood from her seat, eyes narrowing to gather everything happening. Then she saw it. Beau ran out the door, dashing as fast as possible down the sidewalk, away from the crowd forming around the woman. She ran into the street, ignoring the honk of a taxi as it drove by. A small boy—no older than 2— waddled clumsily around the street, a small bear grasped in his hands. A truck roared down the highway, it’s height making it impossible to see the tiny boy. Beau ran towards the boy, the truck gaining at an incredibly fast speed. It all happened at once. In a sudden burst of speed, Beau made it to the boy, diving down to push him with as much force as possible. She could hear people on the other side scramble towards the child, who was now crying. Beau scrambled to her feet, and the truck driver slammed on his brakes. Neither were fast enough. The world turned black, a scream echoing through her head before even it melted away.

Beau woke up with a jolt, squinting at the amazingly bright white around her. She struggled into a sitting position, looking wildly around her. She was sitting in a completely blank place, everywhere she looked was nothing but bright pearly white. There was no sound here except for her labored breathing. “Why hello there, Ms. Butler.” Beau yelped as she leapt to her paws, whipping around to see an old Kalon. He had extremely long and curly fur, the ends fraying from a rich grey to a pale white. His eyes were invisible beneath layers of bangs. He stretched his maw into a grin, sticking his paw up and waving it. “Have I been waiting for you!” Beau cocked her head to the side, raising an eyebrow. “Who.. are you?” The man ignored the question, walking past her. He held a swirling cane in his paw, which he whipped out and smacked across her back. “Ow! That hurt you know!” He chuckled as he turned her, leading her forward before stopping abruptly. “What is this place? And why am I here?” The man turned to “look” at her, the smile still there. “This place.. isnt actually a place. But it’s mine. I like to call it the Memory Hall.” Beau looked around, confusion clouding her gaze. The man snapped his fingers, and Beau gasped as her surroundings changed. They stood in a long hallway, the lights growing dimmer as they progressed. “Each one of these doors is one of your memories. You’re here so you can remember what you’ve done in your life.” Beau began to speak, but he cut her off. “And no.. you’re not dead.” He began to trot down the hall, towards the dimmer parts. She followed behind him, looking around at her memories. They all had dates plastered to them, and titles. Beau ran into the man as he stopped again, grumbling. “This is the first thing you need to see.” She turned to the door, examining it. “August 27th, 2006”. Beau opened the door carefully, watching as a 10 year old her skipped past. It all came rushing back, and Beau watched as the girl stopped by the river. Younger Beau stopped to look down, noticing a spot where ripples danced across the surface. She gasped as a small paw flung from the water before sinking back beneath. Beau rushed to the edge, jumping in without thought. She drug the small figure onto the shore; a girl not much younger than herself-
The man slammed the door, making Beau jump back in surprise. “HEY!” He chuckled once again, heading back the way they came. “Sorry dear, but we’re on a tight schedule. You have a few more memories to see.”

The man showed Beau several more memories, some that she didn’t even remember. She saved a boy from falling off of a cliff on June 7th, 2010. She saved an older woman from choking on December 14th, 2012. She saved another woman from a heart attack on April 28th, 2016. The man brought her to one final door, at the end of the brighter side of the hallway. “February 19th, 2019”. He pulled the door open, and they watched the new memory in silence. “This is why I brought you here. You’ve saved dozens of lives in your lifetime, and you’re destined to save dozens more.” He looked to her then, his voice the most sincere it had been since she’d arrived. “This is why you exist. I know... this life can be lonely. But you just have to remember..” The man raised his cane; placing the tip directly on her heart, where it began to glow. “You’re never alone.”

Beau woke in the hospital, tears dripping down her cheeks. The room was empty, but for once in her life, she didn’t feel like it was.

Follie’s body collided with the hard concrete as their father threw them out of the house. Rain pelted down on them in an instant, flattening their hair to their forehead and nape. Their father snarled at them, an unchecked rage making his eyes glow in the night. He looked like something out of a nightmare. Follie heard their mother calling their name, but they knew all too well that she would do nothing to stop what was happening. Follie’s father gave them one last look before slamming the door, lightning striking fire across the sky above them. They huddled there for awhile—who knows how long— before eventually struggling to their paws and running down the driveway, disappearig into the night.

Ms. Franny found a young child; a teenager most likely, on the footsteps of the orphanage the next day. One of the bigger and older boys, named Frances—of all things— carried the cold teen inside, and everyone gathered around as they came to. Follie yelped as they saw all of the strangers around them, shooting upright and looking around. “It’s alright honey, you’re safe here.” Ms. Franny smiled at them, the 7 other kids surrounding her all doing the same. The oldest boys, Frances and Sam, introduced themselves first. Then there was Eddie and Sylvia; twins left on the doorstep. Next was Angela, she was about Follies age, so 15 or 16. The last two were both 10, and they were Ellie and Spencer. They clutched their paws together as they said hello to Follie. “Welcome to the Orphan Club, Follie. It’s nice to have you as part of the family.” Sam smiled as he ruffled their hair, and a warm feeling erupted in Follie’s chest.

Over the next few months, the kids helped Follie get used to things at the orphanage. They got their very own room—as Angela absolutely refused to share with them— and received clothes from Ms. Franny to wear. Follie slowly began to grow into the makeshift family; Frances taught them how to shave, and they played tag with Ellie and Spencer. They had to say.. this was probably the first time ever that they felt like they had an actual family. Follie didn’t mind that none of them were related in the slightest. Family isn’t about blood lines, or who your biological parents are. It’s about love, and kindness. Your family is anyone who accepts you for you, and loves you despite of all of your flaws. Follie didn’t learn that from their parents. They learned that from 7 orphans, and a woman with a heart 3 times bigger than this planet.
