P E T -P A C I F I C ; Reality Meets Creativity

WELCOME ALL!

It looks like you've happened upon an invitation, to a rather strange island located in the Pacific not too terribly far from Hawaii. This particular island was unknown until only a few months ago, and you've been chosen to come and help survey the area for new species. While you're there, of course, you can enjoy the natural beauty of the island, and maybe even get a chance to adopt some of the newly discovered species of the island. The adventure of a lifetime is ahead; do you accept?

P E T -P A C I F I C ; Hunieri Information

Postby Pharaoh » Sun Dec 05, 2010 6:50 am

      Hunieri Information
Hunieri, pronounced hun-EE-rye, with plural also Hunieri, are a rather unusual species. They are a prime example of evolution, and have charmed scientists alike. These creatures resemble something lizard-like in fashion, with a few feathers, a long tail, and a unique head with very thick, hard skulls. Scientists studied other creatures of the island as well, and learned that Hunieri are actually classified as birds, being Scansoriopteryx aves, a hint to the fact that because of this bird's being cut off from the world, it had retained some of the Scansoriopteryx traits. However, it had made a strange twist down the evolutionary chain. Scientists suspect that, due to predation and competition in the skies, the Hunieri were forced to become more land-dwelling predators, and adapted to a more Omnivorous diet as well.

The adult Hunieri have several differences between males and females. Males have a pointed jaw, and the two bony knobs on the back of their head are set lower than the females, which make a sort of crown. While the set of a male's skull is designed for ramming into others in defense, the female's is slightly different, along with two sets of pointed teeth coming out of the mouth which are used to latch on to and kill prey. The have more back feathers, and tend to keep a little bit of their down into adulthood. They are usually slightly bigger than females, and have more bulk muscle and less lean muscle. Their cry is similar to a bird, a loud and obnoxious shriek to terrify its enemies, or a gentle coo to sooth its young. Males also have an extra set of lights branching from their hindquarters, which are used to help attract a mate. Hunieri mate for life, and if their old mate dies will not always find a new one. Hunieri can live on average thirty to thirty-five years, though some are known to have lived longer.

Hunieri young are known as Rilets. Rilets hatch from eggs, usually a similar color to their environment and their nest, but not always. While Rilets are born with the fine cartilage strands tat will one day grow feathers, they do not have feathers after hatching, but rather chick down that may or may not stay with them through adulthood. Rilet pups have no differences between genders, and must grow up before the gender can be determined. Their egg is usually the same color as their coat; however, as they grow up, the coat darkens and some markings will even show up that were not seen on the Rilet or the egg. Rilets have a very soft skull, but there is a single plate on the front of their head that allows them to bash through their egg when they hatch, an adaptation to the loss of a beak. They are also born without the strange knobs on their skull, but those develop over time. They will also grow light receptors as they age, and their tails will go from a stub to a long, flowing whip-like mass of muscle and bone.

While Rilets are extremely curious and playful, their parents can grow into many personalities. Hunieri mothers are usually very protective, kind and loving around their mate and young, but fierce when threatened. Males usually have a tendency to fight, even from a younger age, and can sometimes help determine Hunieri genders before adulthood; this is not always the case, however, since some females have been seen to fight more than males, and males be gentler than their female nest-mates. They live in family groups, often the male and female and then their Rilets. When the Rilets reach the teenage years, they will begin to go off and follow mother or father, learning how to act and hunt and survive. Once they are adults, they will often go off and start their own little family group. Some Hunieri will stay with their parents though, if they have injuries or special needs. This is rare, but it does occur, and normally when it does the Hunieri parents stop producing offspring to take care of their child in need.

        Hunieri Rarities are as follows:
