Guide to the Dragons of the World wrote:Gemstone Dragons
Lapidi Dracones
The gemstone dragon is a large species of “dragon”. These large beasts are found in natural cave formations all over. Growing to around 13 feet in height, they slink along with their necks and heads down.
Usually without wings, they normally can’t fly, but some smaller sub-species can grow them. Long, pointed tongues help them smell, and upwards of two pairs of eyes give them exceptional eyesight.
Their large, 7-8 inch teeth stick out of their mouth in various places, and are used for slicing though meat, skin, bone, and gems alike.
This brings me to their diets. Mostly eating other cave-dwelling creatures, they also eat what appear to be rocks, but in all reality, they are gemstones. By eating these gemstones, a chemical-like substance called fervidus magno is ingested. The fervidus magnos causes the markings on the Gemstone Dragon to glow.
A bacteria created in their stomachs is secreted into the mouth, turning their saliva into a powerful toxin. The toxin causes the brain to stop functioning, slowly killing the victim. Unlike the Komodo dragon, they can choose whether to use this toxin or not.
They have 3 sets of legs, and anywhere from 0 to 9 tails. Eye color, blood color, saliva color, and flame color is all the same. Having a flame varies from dragon to dragon, as does colors, markings, and tails.
They have six age groups:
Hatchlings- 0-30 years- starts from the size of a house cat to a German Shepherd, no flame at this point, horns and teeth start growing in
Wormling- 30-60 years- starts from the size of a German Shepherd to the size of a Siberian tiger, flame is now present, horns still growing
Teenager- 60-120 years- almost fully grown- leaves nest around this time
Adult- 120-250 years- now lives alone, fully grown, peak of physical health
Elder- 250-400 years- start to group together above ground, tons of knowledge
Grand Elder- 400+ years- Peak of mental ability, other dragons, and other creatures alike, come for information
A full grown male is about 2.5 meters at the shoulders, and about 4 meters at the top of the head, while females are about 3 meters at the shoulder, and about 5 meters it the top of the head.
